Grim Fandango

How is there not a topic for this already? Better late than never. Picked the game up for free on PS+ and decided I wanted to talk about it... But before we do that here's a nice synopsis for people un-aware of the game:

GrimFandango_PCBOX2005redo.jpg

Grim Fandango is an adventure game developed and published by LucasArts in 1998 for Microsoft Windows, with Tim Schafer as the game's project leader. It is the first adventure game by LucasArts to use 3D computer graphics overlaid on pre-rendered, static backgrounds. As with other LucasArts adventure games, the player must converse with other characters and examine, collect, and use objects correctly to solve puzzles in order to progress.

Grim Fandango 's world combines elements of the Aztec belief of afterlife with style aspects of film noir, including The Maltese Falcon, On the Waterfront and Casablanca, to create the Land of the Dead, through which recently departed souls, represented in the game as calaca-like figures, must travel before they reach their final destination, the Ninth Underworld. The story follows travel agent Manuel "Manny" Calavera as he attempts to save Mercedes "Meche" Colomar, a newly arrived but virtuous soul, during her long journey.

Not sure about others, but I haven't even tried this game yet because even the seem-to-be protagonist doesn't look interesting to me.

The art style is quite unique, however.

It's for free if you have PS+ this month. I've never played other Tim Schaefer games but I've been playing it and really liking it, can't believe I'd say it but I'm now pretty excited for his new work coming out.

If you've already got the game pick up the Remastered edition as well. It's got tons of stuff like a director's commentary and concept art that looks very cool.

Manny Calavera is one of the best examples of a lovable protagonist.... I have an original copy on CD in my attic!

Next time it is pennies on Steam, I will pick one up. I keep meaning to do so.

Top tip if you want to get the plat' begin the game with tank controls. It's a fun and funny game, some of the lighting was better in the Original though I feel.

Last time I've played this game was when it came out as a demo, so a "few" years ago, having it for free on ps+ it's a great way to get back and actually finish the game,

Grim Fandango on a console?

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Anyway, the greatest from LucasArts, I found it much better than any of the Tales of Monkey Island part, or Full Throttle. I've actually been wanting to buy the original big box version but they're going for way too much, like €45,-.

Great characters, original universe, great dialogues and a movie-like original storyline, what more could you want? It also still looks pretty decent.

In the game commentary they talked about a cover for "PC Games" that was a picture of Meche taking off one of her foot stockings. Been trying to find the image out of curiosity but not luck. Anyone know where this fabled magazine cover is?

She takes off her stocking once you tear it during the game, quite certain it's just a screenshot of that part.

I think it's more than that. It sounded like they framed it using game models rather than an actual screenshot, like the "Are you seducing me?" scene from The Graduate.

Looks like some concept art or a pin-up. That's the only one I can imagine that you mean, all the other ones are just screenshots from that scene.

The reason that scene is so used to the game is because that one shot was the inspiration for the entire game....

If you go back through the archives to interviews with the original team, you get them all saying they needed to go in a new direction after the Monkey Islands. They hatched a rough plan for a 'sexy detective film noir', inspired by the horrors of Lesiure Suit Larry and the way it poked fun at their titles. Lucasarts wanted to get back at them and show them how to do sexy right, so they started watching 30's, 40's and 50's films for inspiration, but the 'naughtiest' image they ever found in them was the image of stocking removal for the main character. It was so prolific they realised the setting was flawed for the story and instead started looking for ways to present that image in a different way. When one of the artists drew the characters in the scene as Skeletons, the initial image for Grim Fandango was born....

Any articles or interviews or anything to back this up?

Ah yus Grim Fandango... have yet to truly get far into it since I played it a LONG time ago on an old computer for a short time. What I remember though was great, I love the style, atmosphere, characters, and just the overall presentation. Recently picked it up on Humble during their sale and when I get the chance, time to experience this classic again.

I have not personally as they might all still be in print form, the Internet wasn't really the archive it was then.

I still have the original game from way back when. Haven't played it in many years, but one of the greatest games ever made. And I remember the ending hit me right in the feels.

I've played this game from the beginning three times and have yet to get to the end. Each time due to a bug halting my progress. The first time was when I bought the game when it was first released on PC. I don't recall the nature of the bug I experienced then. A few years later with a newer PC I try again and get as far as the under water conveyor belt before another bug halts my progress. Now on the PS4 I got to the casino before yet another bug halted my progress.

To hell with this game and to hell with the imbeciles who "remastered" it.

EDIT: It's still as brilliant as I remember it. I'll start again at some point and just save more.

I just discovered it recently, it's lovely.

PS I had no idea that the Psychonauts (and Psychonauts 2) guy was behind this too <3

I really enjoyed playing Grim Fandango. A very lovely and unique game. The atmosphere was more than awesome, plus I like the voice of the protagonist... :D
