Servers are sh*t

Actually there are no dedicated servers. R* was too cheap to pay for any decent dedicated server so they opted instead for "peer to peer" hosting. That means players have to host it on their own so you have to do very important Pacific Standard jobs on Joe Schmoes potato Internet. Sad but true.

It's a P2P based multiplayer, the "servers" aren't the problem. Most likely what's happening is you've got some gypsy with a dial-up style 3rd world connection f*cking up everyone else's sh*t. Unless you mean the Social Club servers, but I'd say they're reasonably reliable.

Again, their are no gameplay servers. It's P2P, which has the advantage of being instantly expandable. If you want someone to blame, blame your ISP for playing dirty tricks on peer to peer traffic as part of "network management"

Also how can you blame the players connections when online works fine on the rest of the games that the players own but has issues with GTA Online?

 

The problem is that American broadband providers hold monopolies in their areas, and don't have to maintain proper internet connections for their customers, since the majority of customers just need to connect to big servers like Netflix and Facebook, and they make sure that works so they don't get the complaints.

 

When there is competition, gamers will flock to the ISP's that offer the least amount of lag on P2P connections. Kudos to Google for attempting to spur competition with Google fiber. Hopefully it will make traditional broadband providers up their game, and P2P connection problems won't be a big issue.
