Is a map expansion online realistic or not?

Yes. And on the radio the next day they simply make in jokes about the new landmass that has appeared in the game. Do that, accept it as GTA V satire and move on to play in the awesome new land.

It's very possible, but it's not going to happen.

what?

They can make a map expansion happen, but they're not going to do it.

LC story DLC. Still waiting for an announcement. Any news from Fun?

Nothing against Fun [at all], and I'm not trying to rehash that other thread, but think for yourself, people. Why would you wait for someone else to think about it. You were blessed with a brain, too. Use it. You can reason just as well as anyone else can.

My thought process...

Rockstar will begin to implement their maps into an all inclusive online experience. In short, they'll bring Liberty City back, allow your current character to access it and carry over things like money and weapons. You'll have to choose which map to play on, they probably will not attach them or make them accessible from map to map. As the universe grows (like adding Vice City) those maps will be accessible for your online character. Instead of a growing map, it'll be a growing online world.

Traveling between the maps will obviously involve loading screens, not sure how'd they handle vehicles and such.

Realistically, this will be a HUGE undertaking. I like the idea of being able to revisit Los Santos after GTA6 is released, but I'm not sure the system people want will be what they get.

Possible? Yes. Realistic? No.

The map is what it is. R* got it right the first time. I'd much rather them take the resources that they'd pour into updating a 2.5 year-old map into making GTA VI's map (wherever it happens to be) the best map yet. I've said this before, but the majority of players stay in the city 95% of the time. The other 3/4 of the map goes unused, yet players are asking for a bigger map. #ROFLNO

...Most people who want a bigger map want another city. In fact, if there were able to add a major city up north somewhere (which I realize is probably a technical impossibility, as well as something Rockstar would never devote resources to at this point), it would most likely fix the "everyone's always in the city" issue.

Also, for what it's worth, I don't consider that really an issue. I like the relative solitude of the wilderness. I like being left alone in the desert or mountains. The map gets less traffic than San Andreas (the game)'s map would, and if it were an arena shooter map it would be a terrible design. But this is GTA - it doesn't actually affect anything except player perception.

If you ask me, that's kind of the point. People stay in the city because it's interesting and there is much more to do there, compared to the wilderness. The problem is that by now, people know the city in and out and want something new to explore that is as interesting and activity-filled as Los Santos. When I think of "map expansion" the first thing that comes to mind is another city, not another wilderness. And that is what I (and I think the majority) want: another city, with or without another wilderness. I'm not talking about updating the current GTA 5 map either, I mean a new island map that requires flying to or using the airport/pause menu to fast travel to. I don't care if it's an updated Liberty City, San Fierro, Las Venturas, or Vice City. I just want another city to play in.

I think we have had enough of these but anyway...

Q. Could it happen?

A. Yes technically it could be done.

Q. What do you mean "technically"?

A. well it could be accomplished but the time required to make something like this would be good enough reason for them to skip out on this idea, not to mention an update this size would cost a very large amount of money to hire and pay people to make it and if it were free they would lose money. Something like this as well would be impossible to hide from the public a normal update only takes say 2-5 months which isn't all that long and even like that leaks are very common but think about an update they have been working on for 1-3 years, lets just say it was nearly guaranteed to have a leak ( not like the "leaks" currently out by random dudes on the internet who have no real base other than a short string of coding that is too short for a whole city )

Anyway if R* released a larger map they would need to start patching glitches and there will be billionaires everywhere from all the old car glitches but instead in LC.

Possible but highly improbable ( unlikely )

^ did you like what i did there? ^ with the QnA thing, admit it that was pretty baller

Leslie B thinks so, and he works at rockstar. he is pretty important at Rockstar I think.

I guess it depends on how it's implemented. If it's a new area that requires a load screen to get to (like a cutscene of your character flying out of LSIA) then I can see that happening some time in the future. Keep in mind GTAO will still be around come GTA VI so it's possible that they would add a feature to travel between Los Santos and wherever the next game takes place. If by expansion you mean a new area added on to the existing map (like what most map expansion concept art shows), then I doubt it. At least not on current gen consoles.

I think it's possible but it wouldn't appear in the same zone as V's map. You'd have to load it separately by doing the following and how you'd spawn in:

-Start the DLC/"Game" it comes with. If set to last location and you were on a different map you spawn at the airport.

-Use the airport/yacht captain and select the city (as long as another map is installed) The load screen is of the airplane/yacht as it travels. You spawn at the airport or yacht

-Fly/drive/swim to the edge of the map to bring up an option to travel. (as long as another map is installed) The load screen is of the current plane/boat you were in or of you swimming. You spawn at the edge of the map from the general direction you came from. For example, if traveling from LS to LC you'd spawn in the SW part of LC's ocean. Traveling from LC to LS would spawn you at the NE part of LS's ocean.

I could see them doing this for the current console gen and save GTA VI/Online II until next gen. (Which could combine all of GTAV/Online I's maps into one massive landmass.)

Edit: Traveling between maps would be handled two ways on the travel load screen. If you own the disc version of the DLC/"game" you'll be prompted to swap discs before it'll finish loading you into the map. If you own it digitally it'll check your license and load you in without swap disc prompt.

A definate possibility if online was being managed by a company who were capable of making it all run together , which rockstar cannot seem to do ,

Rockstar are a million miles ahead of any other game manufacturer when I comes to making static games like single player gta v , the actual designing and coding of the environment in los Santos and other gta games is phenomenally good as is the most of the content they have added , where they failing is trying to make this all work in a moving , evolving multiplayer basis , there are so many "running" problems with the game it is becoming unplayable ,but they seem to be problems that I'm sure could be resolved . But for some strange reason they either do not acknowledge there is issues with some bugs or stubbornly insist that it's the way the player has his/her console set up. I'd be over the moon if they just acknowledged there are problems and that how ever long it took th they were actively searching for solutions but with the feedback you get from them that seems not to be the case ...

So in short , yes it's possible

But it won't happen with the current set up

Bugs - yes, for sure, but unplayable? That's a slight exaggeration, don't you think?

Yes just look how North Yankton can be loaded over south east of los santos durring a cutscene.

The way I think it would work is.

A : San Andreas is cleared with a diffrent collision map loaded in

B: San Andreas is expanded but requires a game update of the base game aka 2.0 update.

I always see people mentioning Rockstar possibly adding more to the map in the future.

Is this realistic or not?

This map is already huge and well detailed. 2 years later, aand I'm still finding new things. I still marvel at the amount of work that must have gone into making it.

Rockstar's efforts would be better spent on making story mode expansions like Lost and the Damned and the Ballad of Gay Tony so the work on this map doesn't go to waste.

It's very possible, but it's not going to happen.

Impossibility is an unlikely outcome. But it's not 'not' going to happen.

To quote myself...

R* made noises about expanding GTA Online until it's a whole world of maps. If they were even remotely serious about that, then it makes sense to brush off the GTA IV Liberty City map and add it online.

When can we expect GTA VI to drop? I keep hearing the year 2020 thrown around. Will it be based in LC? Almost certainly not. So when will the next all new GTA game with an all new Liberty City be released? 2030? 2040? Truth is, if R* don't add the current LC map to online now, then it may never get added. And Liberty City is an icon of the GTA franchise. I doubt R* will leave it out of GTA Online, which has become their baby project lately.

This isn't 2008, very few would care for a DLC like EFLC. GTA Online would not benefit from it by a single bit and after a week things would be exactly the same as they were before. A map addition, on the other hand (And by that i mean... You guessed it, Liberty City), has the power change both SP and Online drammatically, it would almost feel like a new game. And let's be honest, considering all the recent hype, we can safely assume that the community would absolutely love such an addition.

I hope it doesn't take that long either, but who knows. Each new GTA game seems to take longer to be released compared to the previous title. There was a 5 year gap between GTA IV and GTA V. I sincerely hope R* breaks that trend with GTA VI, but...

I have no doubt that it will once again take even longer which is why I'm going with 2019. Next Gen will probably start launching that year as well. Then a next gen remaster in 2020.

They can and probably already have some of the work done, GTAO runs on the same engine as gta4, liberty city is already made, some graphical upgrades mixed with freemode, yachts, VIP dynamics for freeroam, and new contact missions . It's not hard for them to reskin a city that's already made.

I know a lot of people who say the map is currently too big as it is.

Personally, I think the size is perfect.

What would be better than an Map Expansion DLC, is a We're Opening The Buildings DLC.

I can think of at least 20 unique buildings I would like to see opened up.

Yes, for $60 bucks.

Buying the PS4 version gave me one more convenient store that wasn't on Last Gen
