I'm 30 with the sense of humour and mentality of a 14yr old..

This is actually my first video game I ever really played and owned, PS3 being my first console only bought when I was 28. My parents gave me guns and fishing rods to play with when I was younger, not gaming consoles.

Dr Labuschagne

A pathetic 20 years of age. I wish I was 96 on my deathbed taking my last breath...

I'm only 19 but, I've been playing games since I was 8. It was neighbour's Nintendo, PS1, PS2, grandfather's cyber cafe, laptop good enough to game with, PS3, and now thanks to savings, a PC good enough to play. I wish I was born before, just so I could follow up the evolution of the gaming industry myself.

Nice thread OP. It's nice to know I'm not doomed to be playing with squeakers all the time. :)

31 years old. Oh how the time has flown by. I still remember playing GTA III as a 17 year old and how awesome it was back then. It's been a journey alright.

27, started on my father's Atari and have since gamed my whole life. I had a nice balance of gymnastics, school, friends, and video games while growing up. I drastically cut back on gaming in my college days. Now all I do after work is come home, beep my ps4 on, and game with people I consider my true friends. I like to psychologically observe my situation. I appear to be a hermit while most of my peers are married with kids, but I chose this and I wouldn't change a thing. My bills are getting paid on time, I'm happy, I have no plans of leaving Los Santos anytime soon, and I definitely derailed myself in this post. Thanks OP.

Turned 34 this new years eve :(

as for games now and when I was a kid.. I think its important to remember that games and computers were still a very new technology, games were created for one reason only and that was to be fun... ok a lot missed that mark but it was the only real goal...

these days its multi billion $$$ industry with huge corporations demanding huge profits, hence a lot of games these days are not built for fun... the very reason we would sit there hours trying to beat a level on those early platformer's is now used against us to get us to spend money to open up more game content, while back in the early days it was the computer what was the big SELL... now its the games, everyone is a gamer now to some degree.. weather that PC/consiole gamer or on your smartphone.. everyone and their dog plays games, the dynamic has totally changed...

there is good and bad to this change of dynamic, obviously because of the money involved now we are able to advance a lot quicker and some of the games are incredible but we are also flooded with games that are just there as money pigs... and we as gamers lap it up.. especially the younger generation (and no disrespect intended there at all...) some of you might say "well ofcorse these games are there to make money you fool" and im entitled to agree, and im not denying a company the ability to make a profit but there are a lot of games or more to the point game publishers that demand and push out the same old crap time and time again for AAA prices riddled with micro transactions...

Take "Assassins creed" for E.G a great game on its initial release but now we are fed the same game every 10 months in a different setting... nothing is really new, the FIFA series is one of the worst for this along with cough... COD..

But its not the game devs that are at fault... they are as creative as they ever were, its the huge company's behind the devs now that dictate what, how, and a when a game gets released all based on financial reasons.. not the game....

But saying all this we are now well and truly in to the "indie" era where the above is not a issue or to a lot lesser extent anyway and gamers of this era are able to see what can be done with a GOOD CORE GAME, mind blowing grafix are not the be-all and end-all of a game, something todays gamers up until now have been wrongly led to believe...

im not saying our ZX spectrum games were all fantastic, but the end goal was to make a good game, now its about how much money that title can earn, while the devs might say "we have a great idea for a new game" the publishers just say "NO! make more of the same it works and earns millions".. but the movie industry is exactly the same...

but we have come into the era of the indie that is even hitting consoles now and that's a great thing, we have had some great titles come out that otherwise wouldn't have, so with all the above said.. I think we are actually just about to hit the golden age of gaming, with VR well on it way its looking very interesting!!

Me in the world of gaming i'm probably ancient at 43 compared to most others ( I feel like it anyways, lol )

> truncated <

Awesome... lol..

So just like me you have watched the Gaming world evolve to what it is today...

Do you find these modern games like GTA to be lacking in content or is that just a young persons view who hasn't had to spend hours on end playing Asteriods/Pong.. lol

Modern games. Hmm. My cynicism gets the better of me, here.

I'm sympathetic to a generation of males (primarily) who are becoming more and more under the influence of intense addiction, every day.

Addicted to a natural drug, created by the own bodies, that they have no control over, designed by an industry that is more malevolent, in my opinion, than the cigarette companies today.

Children being exploited and lured into an addiction labeled as "fun" and "games."

Stuck in their addiction for 400-800 hours, then begging to spend their parent's money on DLC to play 400 more of the exact same thing, just a different color.

An entire generation of children, spending their best years of creative, productive energies, mindlessly deteriorating on a couch, while their dreams evaporate, one level at a time.

What skills are they learning? Who are their role models? What are their aspirations? Can you get into Syracuse or UCLA with background in Call of Duty? Will a level 300 get you hired?

These modern games. They scare me, mostly because while I can control my time with them, my four kids cannot.

Sure, I set limitations, guidelines, etc. But they're already hooked. Between social media, video games, cell phones, and computers, there's little time left for a brisk walk outside.

Consider where you and I came from. When games were something you could "feel" when you walked into the pizza joint, movie theater, bowling alley or arcade.

The deep, hauntingly rich sounds of Space Invaders, Asteroids, Pac Man, Centipede, and Missile Command were almost holy.

Not to mention the pinball machines. They were alive!

What can I say, we were blessed and we were lucky. We didn't have DLC or upgrades or Next Gen... we had quarters.

We didn't have 3 quest options, 200 side missions, 400 level-up options, or decisions like what color the shoes on our horse should be... we had a High Score to beat.

It will be both very interesting and yet, somewhat frightening, to see where all this goes and how these 7 year olds who call me "n-word" and "f#gg0t" will grow into the real world.

But one thing is for sure, the modern gaming of today will be the reminiscences of this generation.

What will their fondness of reflection be? Cheers. :)

You are very right in what you say... Video games use to be a pick up play, put down go out and play experience much more than these games that suck you in for days of your life..

For example i was kinda of shocked when i checked out my GTA stats. My Time spent playing GTA Online is : 36d 3h 26m 28s.!!!

All that time spent in a video game.. Over a month !!! 7d 19h 4m 32s Just spent racing..... Man that is eye opening, and that doesn't include the other games i play on top of that time... Scary..

And this is from a "Mature" Gamer who regulates his time playing too the evenings after the kids are in bed...

Having 4 Children I totally get how this Generation of kids are losing massive amounts of valuable time engrossed in Games/Social Media far to much for there own good..

I do try and set limits and get them into other things, like playing the guitar or out riding bikes..

It's also interesting to see the way the poll is going with a fair few more "mature" gamers than i imagined :D

Paradroid, Uridium, Delta, Elite, Stunt Car Racer, The Sentinel. GTA V is good yes but to me this annoying money grabbing theory excludes it from masterpiece status like those.

32 till the 18th

Started on Atari

Still addicted

The Atari was pre your birthdate, older brother kept one?

I'm nineteen, although I've done a lot more than your average nineteen-year-old. Someone on this very forum told me he thought I was in my 30's, which is flattering and all but no 30-year-old has a foul mouth like I do.
