I took my Fallout 4 Pip-Boy out of its capsules for the first time in a long time yesterday.

 

 

 

I was using a Microsoft Lumia 640 Windows Phone when I got the Pip-Boy, so in order to fit my phone into it, I had to remove the back cover from the phone and tape down the battery.

Eh is this right topic? Really like how many new games aren't trying to be realistic, but instead try to look cartoony or at least a different art style, that's unique.

People tend to always compare graphics and how realistic details are, but in my opinion not all are aiming for that and can't really be compared. I doubt many of them are trying to be realistic.

Yea I do feel like we are seeing more stylised games with non-realistic art styles, I wonder if it's because chasing realism means insanely high detailed models and textures which is a expensive and time consuming.

 

I worry we'll see a lot of samey games from it but with modern rendering techniques there should be room for some variation and uniqueness.

Watched the Ubisoft show case:

 

Avatar looks like Far Cry Pandora, visually it looks good, the map looks really great, but the gameplay and systems look exactly like Far Cry. Not massively interested in it for that reason, probably a wait for sale or if I'm bored.

 

The Crew 3 is a step back map wise from the first two, it's much smaller albeit more handcrafted. Never really liked the vibe it's gone for, which has changed from game to game, DLC to DLC, and this being an expansion turned standalone just makes it feel iffy.

 

Skull & Bones... lol, they brought out a band to lip sync a generic song only to show a random trailer and announce yet another closed beta for a game that was originally meant to be out 3 years ago. Madness.

 

AC Mirage. Looks incredibly average to me. I don't buy the "back to it's roots" malarky, it just looks like an AC RPG game where they didn't develop the RPG aspects of it cause time/money - and that rings true considering this was also a DLC expansion turned standalone. It just looks like a very mid budget AC that is relying on nostalgia for dated gameplay and horrendously archaic stealth rather than trying to revisit what an old school AC means in 2023. I'd go as far as saying it looked bad lol.

 

Star Wars Outlaws. I actually dug this, visually it looks good and while I wasn't blown away with any of the gameplay I thought it looked like fun. Massive do world building really well as well so I think I might be in for this one. Looks like a decent time at the very least.

It's a disaster. They've invested too much in it to bin it, but they somehow misread the community so much that it's no where near good enough to release as is.

 

I am sorta shocked they haven't just put out and let it die and cut their losses though tbh, it'd be a rep hit and all but they can then start shifting those resources elsewhere.

It looks FUN. And it's got a lot of character. A charming looking game. I really like what I saw.

Really like the new steam UI, and it doesn't lag at all when in-game, what you think of it? Will have to get used to it with some of the options though.

I expected something more with the achievements so they are not useless, like giving you steam points just as it is when buying a game but not really a problem.

What I don't like is a bit the steam store changes they did a while ago, it's a bit of a mess, and the filters they added weren't working correctly (I think they do now).

Steam will never give anything meaningful for achievements because the achievement system is extremely exploitable, in and out of game. 

 

I do wonder if they'll respond to Epic who are now basically self-funding a reward system on EGS - getting money back of every purchase in a way, basically. Valve's response to EGS has so far been to pull away feature/client wise, they're further away now than they were when EGS launched that's just how horrendous the EGS platform has been supported and how well Valve have kicked on.

Yeh too bad it's never getting a sequel. I never was bored of playing and the side content like the cops/triad stuff was a lot of fun.

I finished it twice by 100%.. But the driving and mouse movement is still something I never liked. The map is a bit closed, you can't really access many areas. It really lacked an outside area, out of the city.

There's a half open tunnel area up in the mountains in the center of the map, which there's a forest area that surrounds it and made me think that I am leaving the city when I was driving there first time. It's one area you never visit in the game aside a street race.

There's an issue in the game with the triad xp. So if you are trying to do that achievement/or for completion you might need to get as much triad xp from all missions/side missions, even from DLC which is a bit difficult.

Are the Crew games any good? I do have both of them on Steam and won't really try them anytime soon. Their reviews are mixed/negative for the first one, while for Crew 2 there's more positive ones.

There's site like AStats which counts if you have cheated or not, even if it was an achievement server (TF2); I think steam can implement something like that too in a way or is that not possible?

They're alright at best IMO. They're basically a more action/NFS focused Test Drive Unlimited. I'd avoid the first cause there's no reason to play that anymore, but the second is alright, it's grindy and has a load of wacky cosmetics but it's a big map with lots to do, planes, bikes, boats. Very service-y in the typical Ubisoft way. The upcoming game, The Crew Motorfest, is an expansion turned standalone with a new much smaller map that looks more of the same, but you can take your entire TC2 vehicle collection into it which is not bad for the type of game it is.

 

Forza Horizon doesn't have the map size TC does and delivers it's progression in a different way - TC is more of a grinder where as Forza Horizon is far more of a collectathon - but map size aside it, IMO, trumps the TC series in basically all meaningful ways.

 

Test Drive Unlimited 3 is supposedly out this year though the devs silence make me think it got another delay, that game is an attempt recapture the experience that TDU1 and TDU2 had, which is basically the genesis of the open world driving game experience both Forza Horizon and The Crew have attempted to recapture themselves.

Well there is the problem of external programs being used to unlock acheivements for a game which would be something that Steam would need to moderate and if Steam started rewarding people for achievements that would be an area that is actively worked on by cheaters to exploit, so that's a lot of extra work.

 

Then you have games with really anal achievements... or really easy achievements. Steam's curation is very light these days so we'd see a lot of games with trivial achievements, all done to make it so people can farm the rewards easily. That's another thing Steam would have to moderate heavily.

 

It's basically just not worth it honestly.

Finally left because the game encourages, PvP.

I made my last visit to my local Gamestop today before it closed for good.  I shook hands with the manager and thanked the staff for their help over the years.  I picked up cardboard Xbox and Playstation signs while I was there.

 

In the Republic of Ireland, the only place I can get copies of games in physical shop is Smyths.  The only other option is online.
