question about VIP cool down period

So I know that our 4 hours of VIP time only count while we are in free roam; in other words, time we are doing missions or not playing GTA doesn't count against it. My question is: does the 12 hour cool down work the same way, or can you basically just do whatever you want and then 12 hours later register as a VIP again?

The latter. It's 12 realtime hours but you don't even have to be online for it to go down.

Ocelot is correct. Since the cooldown is real hours even if you are logged off, it's actually to your benefit to stay online and let the VIP timer run out if it's getting low.

 

If you are coming to the end of a session and you have 15 minutes or so left, instead of logging off, let it run out in freeroam and start the lockout. When you log in the next day you can start a fresh 4 hour timer instead of being stuck with just the 15 minutes (and then being locked out while you want to play).
