gooeyhole
IV isn't for everybody. The driving isn't very forgiving, the combat isn't over the top, the main character isn't a movie cliche, the radio stations are more indie oriented, the story doesn't sacrifice the plot for action sequences, it's the type of game that you will either love (like me & plenty others) or hate.(like most of the internet) Â Rockstar was confident enough to release a game that was what they wanted it to be - it wasn't tailor made for the fans, they didn't dive fully into the multiplayer, industry pressure didn't phase them. Â When IV came out, I'm not sure if people were ready for it. Odd comparison here, but I think 808s & Heartbreak and GTA IV have something in common: as they aged, they became more appreciated. When players finished V's story feeling unsatisfied, it made the player think - damn, Red Dead Redemption & IV really had great story telling, what happened? The "you won't appreciate it 'till it's gone" expression comes to mind. Kanye's 808's wasn't received that well by the purists, but now those same purists fawn over the album to this day. Â V decided to shift focus from being driven by a thick narrative, to being whimsically carried along by an action flick plot, showing off pretty parts of the city, and giving the players some action porn. What V did made the game feel artificial, more of a third person twitch shooter than a deep, immersive game. That shift in focus is the reason why V is much more beloved than IV. In my opinion, V's intention was to become Red Dead Redemption, a game that's story driven yet action packed, but the writing well ran dry this time around. Â IV is the Left, RDR is the middle, and V is the right. The middle is the most desirable option, IMO. slimeball supreme
It's funny how he says the game takes itself way too seriously when 90% of ads, talk radios, hosts and AI conversations are satirical. You even see 69s above doors and bowling pins in between two balls to represent male genitalia. In what way is that taking itself too seriously? I honestly feel like people are beginning to talk out of their asses.BAM. There we go. One of the criticisms I hate about IV is that it's either 'too serious' or 'it doesn't work with the silly hamfisted background'. First off, the game is satire. It's supposed to be ham fisted because this is also how Niko is perceiving his surroundings. Everything is flashy, hamfisted. Exaggerated and absurd. His dialouge, particularly when he's asked what he thinks America is like is all about how much ads there are, how wacky everything feels. Not only is the satire completely off the wall because it's funny and makes sense, but also because this is how Niko feels about his surroundings.  The satire is supposed to clash with the story, which also has plenty of light-hearted moments - might I add. When people say the games story doesn't work and just feels stupid when you have the whole satire thing around it, it just feels like they have no understanding of the actual game's meanings.  This is about an outsider's view of US Culture. He feels that everything there is f*cked, over sexualised and in-your-face. And it's represented by everything being over sexualised and absurdly in your face. A departure from previous games in the series because the satire takes more of a front seat. gooeyhole
IV's comedy is more of a "period piece", if you get me. The right winger nutters on the radio, the invasion of celebrity privacy, the beginning/transitional stage between cell phone's as something useful and something mandatory. The internet being a sh*thole full of wannabe social media sites, the early stages of YouTube being a mega-hit (Electric Tit), television being in that weird reality-but-kinda-not-reality stage, the obsession with coffee & smoking, hipster culture beginning to bleed into the mainstream...plenty of others, too. Algonquin Assassin
When you look deep into it GTA IV isn't that serious. Compare it to a game like The last Of Us or Life Is Strange and it comes off as rather light hearted really. Is it by GTA standards? Perhaps, but I'd argue GTA III and TLAD have more serious stories however that's not a bad thing. That's what gives them their charm. Â I'm just not a huge fan of slapstick comedy like SA and GTA V. It's more tolerable in SA because the game doesn't try to present itself in a serious context, but with GTA V I feel like it tries too hard to please both ends of the spectrum. IMO Niko implying he's going to bloody up Vlad's nose and him dropping Jay's camera on the ground and sarcastically saying "sorry" still has more comic relief because GTA IV relies more on post ironic situations to convey its humour.
