Waste of time and worst of all you have to deal with other players

In an Online video game(which in itself is a waste of time)??

You don't say...

It depends on the challenge, but mostly yes. Any kind of participation will net some money. However, I compete for the sake of competition.

If I have friends in the lobby or if someone gave me a good competition, I will give all the winnings away.

Based on my experience, most players aren't very good at these challenges anyway. With quite a bit of frequency, I spawn into a lobby with a minute or two left on the clock and come out on top (near misses, longest xxx, high speed challenge, criminal damage, etc)

Lots of experience and an encyclopedic knowledge of the game yields dividends in the freemode events.

I want to add that before the events, I found free mode boring. It's not that I couldn't find anything to do, because God knows I love to stalk people and start battles with randoms, and on the rare occasion, make new alliances, but I simply don't have the time or patience to wander a lobby waiting for a piece of the action. At least now I have the option to participate in some frequent and engaging activities that gives me something to really sink my teeth into.

I'm an opportunist, so if something interesting pops up when I'm in a freemode lobby I'll probably take part, especially if I'm on a motorbike and it says "longest wheelie", or if I'm in a plane and it says "parachute longest distance", etc. You get the picture.

I don't hang around in freemode waiting for these events as a way of making cash. That's not good GTA business :)

It depends really - achieving a top3 finish will give you a nice cash injection...but outside of that the rewards are minimal. Having said that - if, say, the top speed challenge starts and you're just messing around in freeroam anyway - you may as well go for a drive and see where you finish...you'll get some cash regardless - and you might just squeeze in to the top3 :)

^if you're the only one on a faggio, you'll definitely win the high speed challenge

I mostly lobby hop for the free roam events. Some are pretty good. I like collecting the checkpoints or destroying tons of cars. Its obviously not the best way to make money and it was never intended to be. Free roam events are there for you to have fun in free roam.

i play for fun so i try to get into any event.

criminal damage is awesome

under the bridge and checkpoints are really good too

the beast is pure bullsh*t man, i blew the beast out of a helicopter it survived, he used a parachute as he was falling, i cut the parachute with my jet, he falls to the ground and still lives!

Exactly. The FR events should be looked as an opportunity for fun and/or a PvP challenge, not a way to fund 1/10th of a hydraulic pump with any reliability.

I participated in the Dead Drop challenge against three others in my lobby (while out of snacks and armor) and I managed to hold them off long enough to get the bag and escape the airport in a Luxor (dodging rockets) and fly to where they couldn't catch me. The others then sent Mercs and a Mugger to meet me when I landed at the dropzone. I lived, they didn't and got salty, I got $20k and it wasn't a time-suck, and most of all: I had fun.

It's like the Special Crates used to be: $5,000 (later, $10,000) isn't a big payday, and the special shirts didn't matter if you didn't care or already had it, but the (up to) 20 minutes of anticipation and strategics followed by 1-3 minutes of no-holds-barred mayhem and improvisation (especially on old-gen with no passive vehicles) was what made them fun.

If nothing else, events you don't care about distract the other players so you can mind your own business in free roam.

Arrows to Athens

I just do them for the fun of the competition, I suggest you do the same, people care way too much about money in this game

But you need money to have fun in this game.

Wrong. Without money you can't use your mechanic, buy cars, upgrade your cars, or even start a job or a heist. Making money is easy, but large amounts of money is very time consuming. A lot of things in this game are really expensive.

I would argue it's still possible to have fun in the game without money. Yeah, you wouldn't be able to purchase vehicles, mod vehicles, buy weapons, own property, etc. But I think it'd be very fun and interesting if you were left to rob and steal everything. Need a gun? Fine, go kill someone and take their weapon. Need a car? Fine, go steal a car like you did in the very first GTA. Oh, you want a property? Well do you really need one? Just live off of the street and be that creepy motherf*cker everyone is wary of in a dark alley. Sh*t, all of that actually sounds like fun to me.

This is a great point. I play GTA like a f*cking financial planner these days. Always making sure I end my sessions in the black.

Guess when you introduce an economic system to a game, major changes in play style follow.

Makes me want to dig out the Atari 2600 have a go with Space Invaders just to let loose.

*sigh*

I remember a time when people measured the value of playing games in 'fun', not 'cost effectiveness'.

Yeah, this game revolves too much around this virtual 'economy'.

In hindsight, it was a great idea. And it still is, but we stress about it too much. Just play the game for f*ck's sake.

I jump on for 30 min To do daily activities and any free roam events I stumble on. I am making about $300k a week. With s full time job, 6 month old baby, those 30 minutes feel like five hours.

The free roam events is about the challenge to win.

Stop thinking about freemode events as a way of making profit - there are dozens of better ways of doing this.

Think of it as robbing a store, or getting $2000 for good behaviour, or even picking up cash dropped by NPCs on the ground - it all builds up.

If I get $500 for pulling a few wheelies and it didn't cost me anything in initial outlay, that's $500 profit to me. I like it.

Maybe if you compete you might win like I do. Getting to the event first often helps its not as hard as you are making it seem. This new generation of gamers are nothing but a bunch of LAzy whiny millennials that want every thing handed to them on a plate.

Some of them are worth the fun, imo. Those stolen purses, deliver the stolen object, etc. are really fun events I think, but wasting your time driving backwards to some guy do a bigger distance, or jumping out of your vehicle at high speed, I still think those are nonsense events.

I always do Criminal Damage & use a tank so no ammo costs as you get 25-30 thousand even if you don't win plus it's fun & the Ariel/land checkpoints as you get paid for each one you collect so can make 20-25 thousand from that. Sometimes I do kill list, delivery's, hold the wheel or hunt the beast if not doing anything else but they usually turn into a kill fest. The others like longest wheelie challenge, highest jump, near miss, reverse driving ect don't pay much even if you win but still I usually get a good score on the sheet to get paid out as you might as well.

If you judge the worthiness of the events by how much "money" you get from them then you're not a real gamer. You may as well stop playing it now, as it's inevitable.
