OP, I just have a few points I want to raise on this idea.

Every time a player kills another player in freeroam and as a result gets taken down by the cops, they have to spend 5 minutes in a jail behind bars.

Cannot call Lester to lose cops for this.

Obviously exempt kills are those in an impromptu deathmatch.

Apart from the tedium of 'hanging around' inside the prison, I don't think this could be enforced. What's stopping people change sessions? What's preventing 'free' players from using Bollingbroke as target practice, dive-bombing with jets and firing missiles into the open-air compound where unarmed detained players are kept?

And as bonus no need for a lame passive mode ever again. !!!

Statements like this are unnecessary, inflammatory and undermine serious suggestions for ideas. It makes your proposal sound more like a personal agenda than a genuine suggestion for enhancing the game experience as a whole for all players.

If you are lucky to have enough crew to overwhelm the police station and break you out before the 5 minutes are up, good for you RP bonuses all round and all the more fun for everyone.

Fair enough, sounds good at first... but let's look at this in practice:

People can barely get their sh*t together for a simple Lamar "Drive here and kill all dudes" mission. Executing an escape plan will likely be beyond the abilities / patience levels for a large number of players, and this also risks turning the prison / police stations into perpetual warzones where at any given time in a session there will be people 'breaking out' their crew - which, considering the play style of this game for most of the player base, will involve the direct approach of using jets / tanks / RPGs until everything in the area is dead (and in this game with constantly spawning cops, that's never going to happen). Getting out without being caught in the crossfire or gaining MORE wanted stars would potentially be very difficult and the concentration of players here could result in too much focus on one area of the map. You just know some dude will sit up on the hillside or buildings nearby, sniping crews who roll up to rescue imprisoned team mates.

In addition, I've found the reliance on having a crew is already damaging enough for Heists and Lowrider missions. While the idea of getting friends involved is great on paper, in reality it's not working out. The crew system is near pointless at present - it's just a name tag. No incentives to play alongside other crew members unless you know them in real life. Different timezones, personal lives and individual preferences for what players want to do in game have to be taken into account. Even in a freeroam multiplayer environment, a player should still be able to access content and not have it locked off because he or she needs three friends to get involved - that kind of imposed barrier to content is the kind of thing I expect to see in FarmVille, not GTA.

It would add a layer of realism that you should at least try to imagine for a game set in a city.

Sorry, I really disagree on this - no game needs "realism". That word is abused so much when discussing game design. "Realism" would include all the humdrum, monotonous aspects of roleplay. Having to make court appearances, filling out forms, putting fuel in your cars, going to the toilet on cue, etc. Games are presented in a similar fashion to movies - they don't include realistic pacing, actions, timelines, etc. for a reason... they just cut to the important story aspects that are presented to an audience in order to engage and entertain. People don't play games for "realism" no matter how much this word gets thrown around by players.

Trust me, you, or I, or anyone else who plays this game needs (or wants) more "realism" no matter how much they believe this to be true. What I think you mean is you want greater IMMERSION - getting absorbed in the game experience so you're completely engaged with what's going on and feeling like a part of that virtual world - which is a totally different thing to realism.

Coleco, passive mode is lame.. is what I meant, never meant it to sound as though players that use it are. Though clearly you thought I did. As for the rest of your post, well i'm not going to bother replying to your other points, since everyone clearly hates the idea and thinks I am insane.

The fact that I think its a wonderful idea is well, whatever, I'm not going to convince people that have already made up minds.

And re realism, i'm not advocating that we all start doing the f*cking dishes. I diddn't have the idea just to make the game more realistic, its a gameplay concept more than anything. I'd rather have gta LA than gta Syria.

More gangster, less terrorist. More crime, less warfare.

And thats my last on the subject, I'm certainly not going to be drawn into an argument about gta.

This would come close to destroying the game if it was implemented it's that bad of an idea.

I also think Bad Sport is a bad idea though, so if we take your idea and apply it to that it would probably work. Better to spend fifteen minutes here and there in the prison as a punishment, possibly not well protected against griefers/players looking for revenge for you blowing up their car meet like an imbecile, rather than months at a time when you can't join your friends just because you have a bit of a thing for blowing virtual cars up.

No worries, I see that now - it's the way I read it, my bad. If it's any consolation, I wish I didn't have to jump in and out of Passive Mode all the time just to drive cars to LSC and go about my business. It's become part of my routine out of necessity and it's such a bore.

I always check myself when using the word "realism" when discussing game ideas - as I said in my previous post, sometimes "immersion" is a better word to use in these cases, in my experience it does spare people taking flak when justifying their suggestions. Any game designer worth their salt should stay away from the "R" word :D

More gangster, less terrorist. More crime, less warfare.

Now see this? I'm 100% with you on this. For me, GTA is at it's best when it's about petty crime / gang confict / warring underworld factions and not militarized operations revolving around shady government agencies. :^:

Ummm but I can take the easy way out and never go to jail!

Hooray for immortality and magic!

Or while we are at it lets just make it so that when you die you start all over. New character and no assets. I mean that makes it more realistic right?

Lets take OP's approach to this, once you take the easy way out, you will have to view a cutscene which lasts 30 minutes of you getting dragged your dead ass off the streets, get buried, and a last scene which then shows you being reborn/growing up again.
