If you can afford a gaming laptop, may I suggest using a 4g wireless hotspot? Not the most cost effective but it if VPN isn't going to work, whether it be because of speed or it simply not working, this might be the only solution.

I have played my PS4 online with the hotspot on my phone a couple of times with surprisingly good speed and I only get 1 bar of 4G is my house.

Due to the lack of ADSL or cable where I live I use a 3G/4G modem on my PS4 and most of the time it works perfectly. One thing to note a session (using mic) is about 100Mb of network traffic an hour, so factor that in to your data plans.

UPDATE:

GTA Online worked with OpenVPN using VPNBook config files but now, I'm getting empty lobbies and disconnection problems. Well, I once had 3 players in the lobby. So, I'd keep trying and once a get a permanent solution, I'd post the guide and suggestions in the OP to help others.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

Since VPN's most likely slow your traffic, it will affect your gaming too right?

It can depend, if you have a fast machine on each end of the vpn it may only add a millisecond or so to the lag as it has to encrypt/decrypt at either end.

All I got is a laptop right now, but I would like to configure all that stuff when I get my own place and pc.

After days of regular research and experimenting, I successfully played GTA Online with over 25 players in the lobby yesterday. I used VPN Gate OpenVPN config files.

VPNGate servers changes every now and then and I've to configure accordingly. I was able to log into GTA Online with VPNBook Euro 217 UDP 53 OpenVPN Config even without logging into my Cyberoam Account but with VPNGate I've to log in with Cyberoam Account that too with an staff account we've stolen up :p

Today, while playing it with the new VPNGate server, online logged into successfully with over 25 players in the lobby but everyone left the game suddenly.

I'm happy that I'm proceeding step by step every day and learning new stuff.

Can anyone help me with this? Any other VPN you recommend? Any other OpenVPN config? Any kind of suggestions are appreciated. I'm ready to experiment anything.

For sure. I'll make a new page with instructions as soon as I get time. For now, I'm posting a summary of the steps for you. If you've find any problem in the steps, message me. :)

1) Download and Install OpenVPN Client.

2) Download any OpenVPN config file from vpngate.com (TCP worked for me. You've to hit and try some config files to see what works)

3) Copy them to the config Folder of the OpenVPN installation directory.

4) Run OpenVPN Client and select the corresponding config file.

5) See if it connects successfully and assigns you a new IP. Otherwise, download another config file (Repeat Step 2).

6) See if GTA Online works. If not, Repeat Step 2.

For me, TCP 995 files always worked. Hope this helps. Have a nice day. :)

Great to hear you are progressing. But Don't expect flawless performance out of GTAO. Since the beginning it has dropped players out of a session randomly. For a reason beyond my comprehension, it quite rarely does it while playing heists, missions etc. But can often do it when voting up for the next mission.

If you befriend a player, there is an interesting possibility: i can't join my friend if he is in different lobby. He can't even invite me, I'm showing offline both on ps4's own console screen and in gta. But if i join his freeroam lobby (has to be that way) we can use ingame voice chat and play as much as we want. Ps4 still tells him that I'm offline, but gta finds me, both can invite and join etc. That is because of a NAT problem, he has type 1 or two, but due to my ISP i can't get out of type three.

On a side note, we both use 4g connections through a wifi hotspot. I use my phone, he has a 4g router. We have same isp, but his subscription had the option for public ip, but that same operator doesn't offer that service to my subscription, even at extra cost. Saunalahti\Elisa isn't the most.... Consumer friendly isp i know of.

For obvious reasons, VPNs are bit slow (encryption/decryption + re-routing packets). The players leaving and similar to you problems mostly appears when my connection speed is below 1 mbps but GTAO works flawlessly with VPNGate when I get speed over 4 mbps (sometimes stable 2 mbps is enough). NAT type really messes up the online play but you could always try troubleshooting ways. I keep trying VPNGate config files till I get a stable connection (generally with less ping, less users and more bandwidth). I don't have anyone of my (real life) friends playing GTAO, so can't about your problem but I get no issues when I connect to my Crew and GTAO friends. I've played many heists, races, successive missions and almost every type with my method mentioned above. Even ISP at my home don't give that much gaming performance in GTA) (2 mbps connection). Sometimes the batch file I've shared below clears out many network related issues. You can use it anytime you get issues like slow surfing, invalid IP, slow downloading, unstable connection, high ping or any network-related issues. It's just a bunch of commands like reset winsock, reset ipv4, flushdns, ipconfig /release, renew though no harm in running it. :p

Happy gaming. :)

No, firstly try without it. Try logging into your proxy first also. If that doesn't work, edit the config files as:

Change http-proxy and port with your ISP proxy and port.

Hey thanks man, it's working for me, but again another problem came up.

All the players in the session suddenly leave.

Any solution for this

Try the troubleshooting steps mentioned earlier. Performance is lowered when using VPN. Speedtest your network and tell me the DL/UL speed you're getting. Try different config files. Try editing the VPN config files with your proxy.

I am getting 8.56Mbps DL and 9.24Mbps UL speed and I guess this one is pretty good.
Also i'll try other config files and let u know.

Yes, the speed is more than what is recommended. You should now try and put your energy on the troubleshooting steps as speed doesn't seem to be an issue. Try experimenting with everything possible. You're progressing step by step. Good Luck :)

They're network related commands so yup, you can use them too.

some commands prompt me to restart my system, so should I restart it each time for every command or should I first type in all of them and restart at the end.

Restart after all the commands are executed. And please, remember to Run the File AS ADMINISTRATOR as you could get 'Access denied' messages.
