The Chain Game is a community based relay game for the Grand Theft Auto series. Players work together in each round to achieve an end goal, each taking turns to contribute progress along the way.

Save File Differences

The Steam Version of GTA Vice City has a slighlty altered Save File Format compared to all other versions of the game on PC. These differences mean that using a Retail Save on the Steam Version of the game will start a new game when loaded rather than loading the actual save file, and that using a Steam Version Save on a Retail Game would result in a Crash.

It's important for all players to note that the VC Chain Game is likely to have a range of players with some using the Retail Version and some using the Steam Version to play. Fortunately, GTASnP.com includes an easy to use Save File Converter that all players can use to download the previous players Save File in a format that will work on their game, even if the player above is using a different version of the game. This allows for the VC Chain Game to have a range of players on different versions of the game without any confusion being caused when downloading the previous players save file.

The instructions below show how to convert save files to work on your version of the game - It is essential that all players read this information to avoid confusion during the round:

1. After you have called a turn and clicked the save file link given by the player that has posted above you, be sure to check the 'Release Version' and 'Script Version' of the Save File which can be found in the bottom left area of the 'Save Information' on GTASnP.com:

The Save File that is being used in this example states that it was created on a Steam Version of the game. Therefore if you are also using a Steam Version of the game, you can download the save file as you normally would and there will be no problems. However, if you are using the Retail Version, you will need to convert the save file before downloading.

2. Converting the Save File is easy! The first thing you will need to do is click the 'Modifications' box which you will find located directly beneath the 'Save File Information' Area:

3. The 'Modifications' Box should expand after it has been selected and you will be able to see three different options to choose from. Converting a Save File is done by clicking the Drop Down Menu next to the 'Release Version' and changing it to the version of the game that you own. If the save file is a Steam Version Save like the example above a 'Retail (Windows) or Steam (Mac OS X)' option will appear for you to select and if the save file is a Retail Save File, a 'Steam (Windows)' option will appear.

e7abbf9609b7e95443dd49e0e14e7df6.png

4. Once you have selected the version, you should notice the 'Modifications' text will show a '1' next to it. From there, you can simply download the Save File by clicking a Slot Number and the Save File should work as normal on your version of the game.

Other Things to Keep in Mind:
If you are using the Steam Version of the game and the user above has uploaded a Retail Save File, you can follow the same instructions above with the only difference being the Drop Down Menu, which will read 'Steam (Windows)' as the other option along with Unmodified.

Converting the Save File is the only modification that is necessary for the user while participating in the Vice City Chain Game. Under No Circumstances should any player use any additional modifications available on the website or any modifications they have downloaded from GTAGarage or alternative websites - This falls under the 'No Cheats, Mods or Trainers' rule stated in the Opening Posts of the game.

Users of Vice City on Mac OS X should note that there are additional differences to be aware of - All of the relevant details can be found here.

One thing: I see stuff that is now obsolete on VC, I know many notes/rules were copy-pasted from GTA 3 chain game but there is still one that has to be changed, the one that says "Try to save with full health and armor...". On VC and onwards, when you save the game, health is automatically restored to full. So you only need to collect new armor if necessary.

Interestingly, the save will remember how much health you had when you saved, so when you upload save on SnP, it will show the health you had before saving but when you load game, it will be full (in case you had less health when you saved). On SA, the saves will not remember the health before saving, so they will always show full.

Wow, that is interesting! :)

Also, I was taking screenshots all the time and now I noticed that fraps isn't on so no screenshots. :(

You can just use the "Print Screen" key to take screenshots, that's what I do. Press "Print Screen" to take the screenshot, Alt-Tab out of the game, open Paint, then Press Ctrl+V to paste the screenshot into Paint!

That's very interesting, thanks for letting us know!

As you have already pointed out, several sections of the GTA III Chain Game Text was used in making the Vice City Chain Game Code as it was more up to date than the text available from earlier rounds of the VC Chain Game, and the rules of the two games have always been extremely similar so there was no need to rewrite what I had already written earlier in the year once again.

I'll be sure to make the changes to the code when I get some time, preferably before the next round of the game. There are likely to be more small errors in the code that I have missed before posting - If anyone notices anything that is incorrect or doesn't make sense, please let us know. :)

Yeah, I know. I usually use steam screenshots but it doesn't want to work now for some reason so I use fraps in Vice City instead. I thought that it's running but it wasn't.

Balls.

Mission: Sunshine Autos

Link: http://gtasnp.com/xhLK1w

Completion %: 33.77%

Notes: Bought Sunshine Autos, delivered all the cars of the first list minus the Idaho (believe me, I couldn't find any for twenty minutes so I gave up)

This save gives me an unhandled exception.

Something seems to be wrong with the save. I just loaded it in save editor and even that crashes. It also doesn't list Sunshine Autos as an asset (it does in the stats though), it crashes when I click on the box.

GTAKid667, can you check if the save works for you?

Already checked before TubewayArmy - It doesn't.

So should I use Gummy's save (that one works) or wait with taking a turn until 2 valid turns have been completed?

Guys, use Gummy's save and make the turn invalid. I have CLEO installed, but any scripts in the folder.

I apologize for the inconveniences. I'll delete CLEO to keep playing.

After looking into the issue further, we'll go back and use Gummy's Save. You have three hours from now to complete your turn :^:

My turn.

Mission: Friendly Rivalry

Called by: TubewayArmy
Status: Completed
Completion %: 42.21%
Notes: Second list of Sunshine Autos delivered - Virgo, Sentinel, Admiral, Stretch, Sabre (twice thanks to angry driver) and for some reason ultra rare Washington

This save seems to have given me an unhandled exception (during the "Loading Game. Please Wait" screen)

Everything works fine on my end too. Are you using a Retail (DVD) copy of Vice City? If so, you'll need to convert the save file using the instructions at the top of the page :^:

5. Chopper Checkpoints:

- Little Haiti Chopper Checkpoint

- Ocean Beach Chopper Checkpoint

- Vice Point Chopper Checkpoint

- Downtown Chopper Checkpoint

These missions are free from regulations, and can be combined in any number with any other amount of side missions. These missions can also be re-accepted by other players to improve record times.

Do these missions really have no regulations or is this an accidental copy-paste? Kinda seems odd that other types of side missions have limits while this one is free.

The Rules are correct - All Chopper Checkpoint Missions do not have any regulations and can be combined in any number with any other amount of side missions.

Didn't know that you get a wanted level in Boomshine Saigon.

"10-4 we got a drunk driver"

But luckily I was already in Little Havana before the cops started chasing me.

I just noticed that on the "100% Checklist" on SNP, "Unique" is spelled wrong.

ClaudX, in your turn, you've done Road Kill alongside Demolition Man.

You can't do two missions in a turn, as the rules say, we'll let you off this time, but it it happens again, we'll make the turn automatically invalid.

Just a heads up, enjoy playing :)

Aw, man. My bad. I guess I didn't realize that the assassinations counted as real missions.

Thanks for the heads up. Won't happen again. :^:

Me.

Mission: Two Bit Hit
Link: http://gtasnp.com/kR5zxg
Completion: 31.17%
Notes:

-Missions for Umberto Robina are now available.

I thought Two Bit Hit was to be completed after No Escape?, Cop Land, and something else:

To avoid this glitch from happening, "Cop Land", "No Escape?" and "The Job" must be completed before "Two Bit Hit".

It doesn't have to be, but its advisable to do so as to prevent the Havana Outfit glitch from occurring.

That Miami Vice reference, tho. :p

Another great round, kinda sad that I couldn't participate as much during the last few days. Also, now I know when I should complete Two Bit Hit.
