Intel Rapid Storage Technology while playing GTA 5 ? Or not?

Hello, guys.

I really don't know if this program (Intel Rapid Storage Technology) is useful for gaming (especially for GTA 5; Read below for details).

And yes, I have it installed and running (since I got my latest system). I have never disabled it.

Here are my specs: i7-4790K, GTX 980, 16 GB RAM, Windows 7. Running the OS on SSD and my files (including games) on HDD.

My questions are:

1. Are there any benefits for using this program in general ?

2. What about disadvantages ?

3. Does it affect GTA 5 ? (if yes, then how?)

4. Do we need it? Or is it safe to disable it?

I'm asking all of these because Rockstar Support told me to disable the startup processes (Run > msconfig > Startup tab) in order to fix a problem I have with the game. (They didn't specify which of these processes though... just disable them all... wtf?) And I disabled some of them. The only one I'm afraid to disable is the Intel Rapid Storage Technology one (since it's related to the CPU, duh). And that's how I got here & posted this topic.

Can you help me / elucidate me about this, guys? Please.

Thank you in advance.

Intel Rapid Storage has to do with your SSD and not your CPU. It's a caching mechanism made for SSD's, but mostly recommended for people who have RAID setups. Regardless, because it's installed as a service, you can disable it from starting up, as it's just the app that you're disabling.

And do I need it? I have a single SSD, not more. And I'm not sure what RAID means, but I think it's for multiple SSDs. Well ?

Edit: This is my SSD: Samsung SSD 850 EVO (250 GB)

RAID is indeed for multiple SSD's or HDD's. I think Rapid Storage benefits enterprise environments the most, try judging whether you need it or not from the link I sent. I think Windows can manage SSD's itself pretty well.

Intel rapid storage or AHCI drivers are important for best storage (HDD and SSD) performance, especially in modern mother boards.Benchmark with then without and you'll see a difference in SSD or HDD performance (rather than the generic Windows inf files). You may also install the drivers in device manager rather than installing the service.

Google on how to do that.

So yes you need those. Not for GTA specifically but for best performance..

in my non-raid setup there was no benchmark improvement using IRST over MSAHCI (and in fact I did get an occasional bsod pointing to iastor, which didnt give me any more reasons to stick with IRST lol).. So i just use the standard microsoft ahci driver now...

just delete it. that's what i did. i have a 1TB ssd and it's working just fine without it. i'm getting the advertised speeds of 555MB/s 530MB/s.

i think it's just if you have a RAID set up.
