I hate modern music as well. Modern music oftentimes also tries to inspire itself by the 80s. I find them cheesy and overrated to death. Nobody gives a sh*t about the flashy 90s which were imo a much better era with less repetitive and more original electronic music. The art style was also toned down, but still colorful. 90s and early 2000s ftw.

I'm still waiting for this period to get it's time in the nostalgic spotlight (not just from GTA, but media as a whole). Something about the fake, the plastic, the corny bubblegum nature of everything feels so devoid of heart it's actually tastefully tasteless. It's an untapped goldmine for satirical writing. Despite being set in the era, III and LCS never gave this time period the justice it deserves.

Modern music can be awesome, I really like music in Grand Theft Auto V, especially Radio Mirror Park. I can't stand these overused songs from 1980's, bleh.

Radio Mirror Park was basically "The 1980s 2 : Electric Boogaloo".

Well, maybe it's different in your country, but here in Poland radio stations either play modern pop/edm/rock or 80s pop/rock. Some lesser known stations also play disco polo. It's just annoying.

So you discard 80s music as overused pop/rock, while effectively narrowing your own taste down to electronic music?

I feel reminded of those people how criticized GTA SA because it had "too much hip hop", conveniently ignoring the Funk, house, (alt-)rock, R&B, country, Soul, raggae, and the plethora of subgenres present in the game.

______________

On-topic: This was probably mentioned a few times, but the verticality of IV (accessible rooftops, cranes etc.) allowed for some creativity in shootouts and certain missions.

That's the thing - most radio stations in Vice City just didn't cut it for me. I felt they were generic and played such famous hits that it got overly stale. Espantoso and Wildstyle were some better options imo because they were more creative and had lesser known tracks, Wave 103 too to a degree. But then you have 2 talk stations, a rock/metal station, a pop/rock station, a pop/R&B station and an R&B/disco station. They could have crammed 3 of them into one station and cut one talk radio and what do you get? Far more room for more varied genres.

Well, VC was the first GTA with an almost entirely licensed soundtrack (in contrast to R* producing the music / using "small" artists), I think R* stepped up their game afterwards.

It's not like Vs soundtrack was exclusively made up of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and LMFAO, likewise a new GTA set in the 80s wouldn't necessarily build its soundtrack on Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi and Phil Collins (Peter Gabriel would be a start).

Fundamentally, I agree on the overused-part, I'm just saying it doesn't have to be this way.

Honestly the fact that this game had the most fun getting to the early island challenge

I also like how you don't get a blimp into your actually discover the inside of an interior

Since GTA IV was my first open world game ever I will never forget being like 6-7 and only having the first island unlock and crossing to the third island (Alderny) and barely making it inside a clucking bell and then shortly dying afterwards. When I opened my map again, I noticed I had the clucking bell blimp sitting lonely in the third island, no blimps in the second island, and almost all blimps (I knew at the time) on the first. I must have only been 4/5 missions in the game. I felt so accomplish!

Soooo much the humour. The script of this game is f*cking hilarious, funniest of GTA games, funniest of any game I've played, funnier than most films or TV shows. Dark humour, subtle humour, in your face humour, sarcastic humour, silly humour, satirical humour, slapstick humour, all kinds. Niko, the rest of the characters, peds, the radio and random billboards, so much entertaining comedy from all of them. It gets credit for the serious/dramatic side of the writing as it should, but the humour is 10/10 too and blends in flawlessly.

I feel like GTA IV is the only game I know to do subtle humor and dark/satirical humor right. GTA VC, SA, and V all feel WAY to satirical while the other ones feel underwhelming and GTA IV gets it just right!

Something I want to add is the controls. I see a lot of comments like they're "unresponsive" and "clunky", but I just don't see how they are. I've spent the last 4 weeks playing GTA V and going back to GTA IV feels like I never left. To be fair GTA V also gets the same kinda criticism as does most of the R* stable made after 2008. It just sounds like bias to me.

Sure the protagonists feel "heavier", but I don't see why that makes the controls apparently bad. As much as I love Vice City when I played it recently it felt ridiculous how fast Tommy moved.  I think the controls is definitely something R* improved on in their transition into the HD era and it puzzles me why more people don't see it.

Honestly GTA SA, LCS, and VCS character movements are actually pretty underrated in my opinion. But ESPECIALLY VC you feel way to light. Even GTA III felt heavier.

To be honest I think weapon variety is a bit overrated when some weapons feel like they're just thrown in for the sake of being thrown in. This is why I feel GTA IV has the best weapon mechanics in the series because it allowed R* to concentrate on the fundamentals. I don't even notice when I'm playing GTA IV I only have a small selection to work with because each of the weapons it has is something I would use in any given situation.

IMO that's more important than having 10 different looking pistols, SMGs, rifles etc I may go the entire game without ever using.

OK Maybe this just my SR2 fanboyism talking here as it always felt like Saints Row games handled weapon differences better (prior to 3 really) but I always get really sad with GTA IV having to few weapons but still felt great while GTA V single player weapons being exactly enough but feeling to similar. For perspective back in SR2 I always found my self switching from every weapon type ESPECIALLY the pistols/shotguns and they even had different ragdoll forces you can clearly see while everything in GTA V feels too similar (not to mention boring looking and all even look too similar compared to GTA IV and even more so SR2). I 100% agree GTA Online has WAY and I mean WAY too many weapons however.

I think money gets underappreciated a lot. People complain about how there's nothing to spend it on after you've finished the story (even though you can say the same for every other GTA), but the price of weapons are insane. And so is the fee after you get wasted.

Both GTA IV and GTA V are AMAZING hype games when you hear their soundtrack, quick cutaways, and characters in action as a trailer/presentation!! Whenever I get bored of either, I just watch their trailers!

True, V's trailers were incredible. I still rewatch them all the time, those MFT character trailers especially. I don't think I'd ever been that hyped for a game and it made the disappointing reality of the game that much worse.

IV on the other hand was everything the trailers made it out to be and more. Don't do anything stupid, cousin! I hired you to do a man's job, you amateur! Classic.

In my recent playthrough I've come to appreciate Brucie more than before. He's nuts but he has a certain charm. And I actually think he's smarter than he looks.

I also like hanging out with him and especially liked when he said "Most people are content with average, but me? I always want the best bro. Average doesn't satisfy me". I know it's just him talking bigger than he is but I still appreciate his mindset and to be honest I very much agree with it. I believe a lot of us are just happy with "average" and "mediocrity" in our lives and never really push ourselves to the limit.

Yeah like obviously the way he acts is pretty cringy but he's loveable in a way, you can tell he's good at heart and mostly just insecure. I particularly like how they explained and expanded on his character in TBOGT. You see him with his brother and suddenly it all makes sense.

The hand-to-hand combat. When I'm bored I walk up to the nearest pedestrian (preferably male because they seem more likely to fight back) and give him a punch. What usually ensues is a fistfight involving punches and kicks being thrown from both sides. I really like the ability to dodge and move around while locked on and counterattack with a combo of moves. Ah and not to mention the ability to steal knives off of attackers to attack them back with.

Indeed. I love doing some low level messing with cops in IV. Bump into them, interfere in an arrest, get them chasing me on foot by picking up trash and throwing it at them. Also the fact that you can have a fist fight with a cop (if you knock the gun from their hand using your knife/bat/gun as a melee weapon) and they even have unique fist fighting dialogue is pure brilliance to me.

Only low level (ie one wanted star or less) fun you can have with LSPD is saying two insulting things to them or standing close to them for a moment until they get annoyed and then leaving. If you say a third thing or mess with them in any other way they're after you and you'll have two stars as soon as you move so the fun is over.

And yeah it's great to be able to do stuff like fighting people without knowing an automatic wanted level is always coming. In V there's no cops patrolling so everything has to be pre-set, like I'm pretty sure knocking two people out is an automatic one star. Whereas in IV you might get away with a massive brawl if cops don't happen to see/hear it. Or you might be unlucky and one might be round the corner and be after you, but even then you can still avoid things escalating to high wanted levels. Wanted system in IV is conducive to fun and unpredictable gameplay.

The fact that in TBOGT you can get totally wasted in Maisonette 9 and wake up in the middle of nowhere. I remember waking up in a creepy place with a giant heart in front of me that turned out to be the interior of the Hillary statue. I had a good laugh.

Lmao I already knew about that place and had been in there before so it wasn't that shocking when that happened to me but I always thought how weird/scary it would be if you'd never seen/heard of it and suddenly woke up there like that, I would've freaked out. I also like when you wake up on a little island in the lake in Middle Park as when you try to swim you just float there helplessly until you've sobered up lol

I think the clubs in general don't get as much praise as they should. They brought a whole new atmosphere to the game and I just love the level of detail put into them. Dancing, doing shots, the drinking contest, pulling women, the epic dance off with that guy in Hercules, the fun club management missions and the silly but funny thing with Joni calling you into the office for an "emergency", and just little details like Luis having a special club walk, the realistic way the music gets louder/quieter as you enter/leave, the bathroom attendant and interesting noises coming from the stalls, people hanging around outside and throwing up in the street as morning approaches. I really enjoy them. Just a shame they kept Bahama Mamas locked.
