Things in GTA IV that don't get appreciated enough

This is why R* shouldn't have removed the silenced 9mm. That, and because Niko's supposed to be a hitman. It makes more sense for him to use it than CJ. The revolver would've been cool as well

Would been extremely useful to go hunting the godawful collectibles that are the pigeons.

Maybe this might not seem like the best pace to post it, but since The Lost and Damned is technically still a part of GTA IV I think it’s appropriate. Basically, what I have always loved about TLaD is the fact that the game did such a good job with bikes that I’ve never actually wanted to be in a car. In IV and The Ballad of Gay Tony I was indifferent, but in a biker-themed game I honestly can’t appreciate enough how Rockstar somehow made me to not want to drive a car and always mount one of the many motorcycles in the DLC. I may be the only one, but I do hope not.

You're definitely not the only one! I rarely choose a bike in GTA but in TLAD it's second nature to do it, I hardly ever drive a car. I love the way bikes handle in it and also it just feels right when playing as Johnny.

Related to this is the way TLAD makes you feel like part of a biker gang so effectively. Thanks to the way missions and hanging out works, the way you ride around in formation (which it's also worth saying is done very well - there's never any issues with waiting around or losing people etc) and living in the clubhouse, instead of the usual lone wolf type feeling you have in GTA you constantly feel the presence of your fellow gang members and feel like part of a team. It's a striking and interesting difference, has me only riding bikes and only listening to rock/metal music. Very successfully created immersive atmosphere.

TLAD will always be a underrated GTA. It captured the outlaw biker theme so damn well. I didn't think there was any other users who did this? lol. I hardly use cars in TLAD. It's always bikes to get to point A, B etc...It just feels so right and with the updated bike physics from vanilla IV it makes it even more enjoyable. The same with me I only listen to rock/metal while playing tlad but once in a while I like to get my groove on and switch over to K109 The Studio. Love me some 70's jams. Other times I just listen to intergrity 2.0 with Lazlow and his shenanigans, lol.

Unless I'm mistaken, but I don't think there's any (significant) difference between the bike physics in GTA IV compared to TLAD. It's just it's harder for Johnny to fall off. GTA IV's bike physics get trashed almost as much as the car physics do, but the only bikes that feel a bit awkward are sports bikes. When I ride a chopper in GTA IV it feels almost identical to riding one in TLAD except like I said Johnny holds onto the handle bars harder.

Anyway I agree that riding bikes is the only thing in TLAD that feels natural. I'm sure I've only ever driven a car once, maybe twice when I've been left stranded, but besides that it's never been out of choice. It's like the horse in the Red Dead games. And yes TLAD is a very underrated GTA indeed. While TBOGT gets the majority of the love from GTA fans TLAD sadly usually gets pushed to the side. I love the biker theme and it feels unique compared to other GTA games.

Johnny's also a legend as are the rest of The Lost.

ROCKSTAR MANIC

Holy sh*t, I played TBOGT a few minutes ago. This was something else, doing the drug wars with H & A. Well, I was doing drug war 51, it was "The Stash". Located in Alderney it was the mansion with the helipad in the back. Well, having to retrieve the duffle bag and but not before that having to fight dozens mobsters in the back yard caused a 5 minute intense gunfight. A & M just busting shots, mobsters shooting pot shots with M4s & stubby and A12 shotguns. Boom, Boom, PA, back and forth.  I dont know but it felt real, I took cover behind the Cavalcade just taking in the atmoshere. You could hear people in the distance screaming, the best part no cops were called. So it felt like an isolated incident. That the best part for me. Anyways, They would take cover behind their cavalcade's, so much shots that the vehicles were all busted up, broken windows, destroyed lights.  Bodies dropping everywhere in the parking lot and the back yard. After I got the duffle bag, there was a helicopter parked. I thought of taking it, but that was too easy, instead i decided to fight my way back to the front of the mansion. Mobster driving in sentinels, Pmp's getting out, shooting. It was so intense, just for this stash of Spank. Got in a PMP and drove to the safe spot being chased by more mobsters, just shooting back and forth so intense. Got there safe.

But I say this because I have to thank R* for having moments like this, gunfights everything in between that happened. Felt like a mission, it was so crazy. Cant believe IV still gives us these experiences after all these years.

I feel the same things . I wish TLAD had this drug war gameplay , too . It would be perfect that the Lost MC established some businesses during gameplay such as drug wars , protect their drug convoy stuff like that alongside with gang wars .

I've said it a lot but I really love the amount of variation and unpredictability in this game, with so many small details in play there's seemingly endless combinations of things that can happen both in free roam and in many missions. Messing around in free roam is fun in every GTA but to me it's far and away the best in IV because none of the others have the level of detail to physics/mechanics/ped behaviour etc that allow for as many varied and unpredictable situations. I can't understand how it ever gets accused of having the worst free roam.

Like, I was playing a save where I didn't have enough money for a prostitute so I drove up to one and threw a molotov out the window at her instead, unfortunately I was in Little Bay and some passing Albanian gang members didn't approve and I got in a car chase/shoot out with two cars full of them, then police joined in and because it's IV instead of just shooting at me some of them went for the gang members as well so I jumped out of the car and had a three way shootout with bullets going all ways between me, the police and the Albanians, cars exploding and knocking me back/making my ears ring, awesome. Similar stuff can happen in other GTAs but it either wouldn't have had the same level of detail or wouldn't have lasted as long. IV's free roam is the best!

Because GTA IV requires a keen mind and doesn't spoon feed the player with content like San Andreas and it's too much for some people to handle so they get bored too easily. Well said though.👍

In my opinion, the friendship activities. Not the activities themselves but the immersive feel they add to the game. Normally when I played GTA IV, I would often only focus on the mission side of the storyline and ignore the rest. I would only go on friendship activities or side-missions until their like and respect reached 100%, same for girlfriends. But recently I did a more casual and patient playthrough of GTA IV and the episodes where I frequently hung out with friends and carefully listened to their dialogues. This makes the game feel more consistent and intact because if you hang out with friends and catch up with them every other day, it doesn't feel sudden and random when they make reappearances in the main storyline missions every once in a while. This especially helps with enhancing Kate's role in the storyline. If you do the activities with her and listen to all the dialogue, her appearance in Gerry's missions and Derrick/Francis' funeral then the final mission will actually be meaningful because since you've familiarised yourself with Kate, her chemistry with Niko during the cutscenes of said missions means something to you and doesn't seem forced.

This works with all the other friends as well. Roman's distant appearances in several missions, Jacob's reappearances in Bohan and then with ULP in Algonquin, Packie reappearing after Gerry's arrest, etc. In that playthrough, I did these things slowly and gradually, like one or two or three after every storyline mission. It really contributed to the game's atmosphere and made the flow of the story smoother. In fact it left such an impact on me that, after finishing all storyline and side-missions, I decided to shoot all the flying rats as well to achieve 100% completion just for the hell of it. I recommend doing this sort of playthrough to anyone.

When we're talking official side activities I get this reasoning because there are other GTA games that have more, or that might have ones that appeal more their taste. But like, just in free roam messing around I really don't. There's so much to do and try and even just watch right there in the streets in any area of the map, you can take off on a shooting spree or whatever else you feel like doing just as easily as in any other of the games, but with added extra detail in almost every aspect. Even if you don't take the time to notice or play around with the extra detail it's still at least as good, I can't see what it's meant to be lacking. Idk, it's just a super fun game to play for me, I'll never understand the word "boring" being used to describe it.
