Things in GTA IV that don't get appreciated enough

Recommended Posts

SonOfLiberty

Title's pretty self explanatory.

So as we all know back when GTA IV was new it created a divide among the fanbase where a lot of people didn't like how it stepped outside of the 3D era comfort zone and a lot of people didn't mind the rapid changes, but what's something you feel that simply doesn't get enough appreciation even though you feel it should?

For me it has to be the cover system. I've heard everything from saying it's broken, clunky, unresponsive etc and whilst there's no denying it sometimes has a mind of its own such as placing Niko in positions you don't want him to I don't feel it's this monstrosity people make it seem.

From my experience it does its job more often than it doesn't. IMO it was a great addition to the series considering how much it changed gunplay, but it seems to get judged too harshly on its technical performance compared to newer games without much consideration for the fact it was the first time the series had an actual cover system implemented.

The shooting mechanics.

90% percent of the fanbases tend to compare the game to everything else in terms of driving physics, open-world content, realism, graphics, story and characters, the setting, and the atmosphere while ignoring the gun fight despite that GTA IV is a game of violence and explosions.

The friendship system. Hear me out.

The friendship system worked in a way because some characters could unlock you special abilities depending on how high your like percentage is, such as Dwayne with the "backup" option, the "guns" option with Little Jacob, which gives you a 60% discount on weapon purchases, and the "car service" with Roman, which delivers you a vehicle on demand.

True, it's a bit annoying when you're called and then being disliked if you don't proceed with the activities, but the perks you acquire if your friends like you enough is pretty neat, in my opinion.

Radio stations.

IV has by far the most diverse selection of music in the series, while keeping consistently high bar of quality. In other GTAs I have three, four stations I cycle through, mostly of similar genres. In IV I listen to much more, from classic rock on LRR to chillout on Journey, from jazz on JNR to disco on K109, from eastern european pop on Vladivostok to indie rock on Radio Broker... you get the point. And then Rockstar doubled the offering with DLCs and brand new stations like Vice City FM and even significantly changed the sound of several original radios. There is just so, so much good music in this game, for every situation and every mood.

That immigrant feel. Liberty City is new to the player, and new to Niko. I appereciate how the story keeps chugging along, not really hinting at a positive nor negative ending. Instead of controlling three people in a short time, I'm with Niko for the long run. I miss the deep conversations, with Niko's cynicsm shining through with people like Dwayne, "I didn't have electricity until I was 12", leaving you to try and understand why these two people from poor backgrounds are having a "who's life is sh*ttier" contest. Packie telling stories about his family, shedding light on why Kate's so hesitant to dive into anything, why she wouldn't trust men, etc. He tells a story about his mother's iron will, she'd never break or cry when her husband would go ballistic.

I don't like doing missions for people I don't like for the bulk of the game. I wanted to help the McReary's, I wanted to help Brucie, I wanted to help Elizabeta, they all are fair - even the guys we're supposed to hate are not generic villains. Darko's a scumbag, but is killing him going to do anything after Niko's murdered dozens of people? Faustin was an angry man yes, but not a dumb one, he tells Niko straight to his face that Dimitri is a snake. He was right.

I miss activities that I could sit back and watch. The movies in V are terrible. I've sparked one up to the comedy show and the Russian theatre. The television segments felt longer and I preferred them. I miss Lazlow's last good radio show, Weird how TV was somehow better in IV when V was set in Hollywood.

I appreciate the damage, the blood stains instead of random LQ bulletholes all over your body, even on your f*cking face, like come on.

I appreciate the way they made Niko/Roman seem like brothers. I cared more for Roman's well being than I did for any of Michael's family. Lamar is a great character but I never cared for his survival. I'd fight for Little Jacob, Packie, but Lamar just seems like comic relief with a gun compared to the previously mentioned.

I appreciate the peds. In V, it could be just my luck, but I run into so many repeats. I hear the same lines. I play IV, I'm walking through Hove Beach hearing different languages. I'm not Rosetta stone here, though I think I heard Ukranian a few weeks ago.

I appreciate the way hitting a ped with a car feels in IV. That splatter, with the sound, and the blood stains on the car, the ragdoll physics, have made me brake and turn the camera around. If it's by accident I feel bad sometimes, I mean damn .It looks and feels nasty.

I appreciate the dating. Niko's a thirty year old man. He should be dating. Franklin should be dating, too. Plus the girls are actually kinda interesting. Alex's got that blog that updates after every date, you've got Kiki's stories of her law career and her obvious naivete. Carmen's the slut of the group, Kate's a new door into the McReary family and a nice fit with Niko. Karen's a bitch but a well acted bitch.

It's called realism. I had a friend for about 17 years. We were best friends, until I started playing GTA IV in 2008. You see, I always ignored my computer-controlled friends, and never went out with any them. Worst thing was (call me a monster) I didn't even feel bad about it. I laughed at their misery and though Roman was being pathetic with his bowling.

Eventually me and my supposed best friend became estranged. The guy locked himself inside his room and never went out, even though I called him a hundred times.

"Let's go see a movie!" The answer was "no".

"Let's go shoot pool!" The answer was "not in a mood" (well, I always beat him anyway, so I can understand why he didn't want to play that).

"Let's go for a walk in the park!" The answer was "maybe some other time".

"Let's go out and grab some drinks!" The answer was "I'm watching a movie". Seriously?

Years passed by and eventually I stopped calling my best friend, "best friend". I eventually stopped calling him at all. I thought to myself, if he wants to hang, he'll call. He never called. Not once. Ever since GTA IV's release in 2008, we've been seeing each other twice or thrice a year, usually for our birthdays and New Year (we live a few minutes apart from one another). Coincidence? I think not.

After 17 years of friendship, we aren't friends anymore. And it's all GTA IV's fault. That game is cursed.

The moral of this story is: Treat your in-game computer-controlled scripted NPC friends as you want to be treated (or else karma will get you).

What sucks the most (apart from the bad writing) is that the story is actually true.

During 4+ star chases in Algonquin, snipers are located on rooftops and the sides of buildings. If you drive slow through the Exchange with a higu wanted level, you'll see random dots scattered about and hear/see shots coming out of nowhere.

I wish there were more Friends as well. Hassan Ramsy, and Jermaine Andrews come to mind. Additionally, I wish that Kate was not one of your Girlfriends, and was instead just a Friend.

Everything. People saw that this game wasn't SA 2.0 and they dismissed everything good about it.

Not everything. Please, support your claims with some proof than being vague on purpose, based on the theories of handful of people you had troubles to convince them about the game being designed with different audiences in mind, that applies to both sides, and every game.

Also, I find it really stupid when people keep on hammering SA 2.0. No logic in such claims. Its never seen as SA 2.0 based on the proof I couldn't find many posts on the gtaforums, where people happen to relentlessly push their reason to the disappointments mainly due to not being "SA 2.0".

In fact, its the other side who come to such stupid conclusion because they have got no defense left.

For the topic, Driving!

The dialogues during hanging out with friends. They add so much immersion and personality to the characters.

It´s a shame that so many people just rush through the game and don´t get the chance to listen to them (or they don´t get the chance to listen to all of them).

Anyone who said driving, it gets appreciated a lot. That's all we talk about :p

"Let's go shoot pool!" The answer was "not in a mood" (well, I always beat him anyway, so I can understand why he didn't want to play that).

"Let's go see a movie!" The answer was "no".

"Let's go for a walk in the park!" The answer was "maybe some other time".

"Let's go out and grab some drinks!" The answer was "I'm watching a movie". Seriously?

What, you never mentioned the titties bar or bowling? Maybe that was the problem :p

Very true which is why it surprises me to see IV fans acting like that.

As for the friends system I like hanging out with them but it would have been much better if they didn't get mad at you for saying no. If I am on my way to a mission or to steal one of Stevie's cars understand if I have to postpone bowling for another day.

Lol you're actually defending the cover system? It's total crap. There's no getting around the fact. A simple comparison to V's system shows how sh*tty IV's cover system is.

For the topic: The comedy clubs and some TV shows. Some of them are real funny.

All you have to you is call them back to cancel. I mean it takes a few extra seconds, but it won't affect either way. Then again even if you flat out say no it only takes what? 2% out. It's barely anything in the grand scheme of things.

I don't know, but I kind of like how the like/respect can be influenced. It makes them feel more believable and less static.

To me it's just like the businesses in V or the gang attacks in SA. I like to do things on my own time in a game instead of having them thrust on me at the most inconvenient times.

It's a bit more realistic and polished in V. No more sliding on your knees on the concrete for one (or taking cover behind lamp posts and mail boxes). GTA V removed the crouching, so cover was pretty much a must, unlike in IV (where I just crouch behind something)._.

And that's why I feel it's under appreciated. I mean of course GTA V's is more refined, but then again it should be shouldn't it?

GTA IV was the first GTA to have a cover system and like it or not it added a whole different level of complexity to gun fights that wasn't present in the 3D era.

To say it's "total crap" is complete nonsense.

Funny, ever since I started hanging out with friends frequently in both V and IV, I started getting more friends and I started hanging out more in real life, while still playing GTA like a no-lifer.

Now that I think about it, I'd say I got my first kiss this year because of GTA, I'm not even mad since I waited for that to happen for so long while the plurality of my friends aren't even virgins anymore. Thanks Dan.

I find in IV once you unlock their special favors the calls are less frequent which is why I unlock it as quick as possible.
