I really don't know how these soldier FPS's make any money ? There are that many of them I lose track on what is what, but I guess some poor sod is still buying them.

 

As for the whole starcraft and lack of AA mess (f*cking deferred rendering again) I don't think anyone should be "gloating" it is damn shameless that a PC developer won't support AA but then Blizzard seems to get away with murder these days with no LAN, splitting games up and console game pricing on the PC.

All the reasons why I wont get the game until it's like $15 or something. Maybe by then someone will make a LAN patch, and offline AI matches.

 

I just know World of Starcraft will come at some point in the near future.

I'm no expert on Starcraft, but I think the next two releases to make this game what it should've been at first will just be expansion packs and priced accordingly (albeit still pretty expensive given that they're not really addons). The LAN patch will probably be released towards the end of this year once they're sure that enough copies have been sold to meet their profit expectations.

 

The main reasoning (excuse) for their ridiculous decision with LAN options was piracy, so hopefully once the game has brought in the bucks we can have proper LAN play options.

 

It seems that large game developers and publishers are becoming more and more console-whore-like these days. Blizzard haven't sold their soul to the devil (so to speak) the way that Rockstar, Epic and Bullfrog/Lionhead Studios did, but some of their production decisions are clearly of the "dickhead" variety.

 

A bit like Valve. I know that Half Life Episode 1 and 2 are great games, but in my view, the old: "major release followed by a few outsourced expansion packs" was a great scheme. Imagine if we had Half Life 2, Opposing Force 2, and then a varient of Blue Shift - where you play as someone else behind the scenes of the same story. After that, we'd be ready for Half Life 3.

 

Lucas Arts...dare I go there? Sam and Max, Monkey Island etc. Everything seems to be going down this fairytale, daffodil path of

. Ie. fast-track development time, shorten gameplay time, maximize unit sales, make people pay 3 or 4 times the amount of money they should be paying, and see if we can get a few shady deals done with console manufacturers at the same time. Edited July 31, 2010 by DML

The new ATI drivers let your force AA with not much of a performance loss (for me anyway)

It is my understanding that this driver level AA is less than perfect and tends to have a lot of blurring. I think one of the things that annoys me too about Starcraft 2 is the fact it is a Dx9 game. Now fair enough there are still a lot of people out there that use Dx9 but for god sake the thing is 8 years old now at least start to embrace Dx10/11.

 

Now since the engine is Dx9 that means for the next 2 or 3 years Starcraft 2 addons will be Dx9 by that time it Dx9 will be 10 - 11 years. This really doesn't show to me that Blizzard are a forward thinking PC developer and I would say from my perspective Blizzard is doing more to hold back PC gaming than it is to push it forward just so they can make a few bucks.

 

However I keep coming back to the point, if this is how a primary PC developer treats the PC platform then why should we expect multiplatform developers to do any better ? If EA, Rockstar or any other developer pulled half of what Blizzard have pulled with starcraft 2 we would be calling them every name under the sun but because it's Blizzard it is ok for them to neglect basic PC features, it is ok for them to price gouge and split the campaigns up and charge extra and it is ok to charge a console price for a PC game.

If consoles didn't exist we'd be on DX13 by now.

As much as I would like to blame the consoles I don't think that's what is happening now. The PC is now caught in a catch 22 situation, we don't get Dx10/11 games because there are too many Dx9 systems around and we won't get people moving up from Dx9 to Dx10/11 because there is no software that makes use of it. The whole software industry is about making as much money as possible. Now I am no communist I firmly believe a developer should be profitable, the problem is now that everything takes second place to profitablity and I mean everything.

 

Ah well there is sod all I can do about it, perhaps it is time to take up a new hobby

In regard to DX10, MS definitively did their part and had stones cast at them at the same time. They "locked" DX10 to the new OS and we hated them for it. The truth is, we don't know what we want so how can we expect the developer will take all the risks? W7 is taking significant market shares, but still ignoring many XP users would be/is a foolish move. If MS wasn't so torn apart by their crazed-company ambitions they could promote their new technology by making some new shiny DX10 games which would leave all the XP users soaking while those who moved on would be happily gaming. So they would start looking for upgrades as well.

 

MS should be taking the lead, it only makes sense, but that company is so degenerated I don't know what can be expected of them anymore.

 

W7 takes the lead, the 64bit version. Let's hope for the next OS release MS will take the opportunity not to make any 32 bit versions.

Get an i5-760. It's pretty close to the i7 in terms of gaming performance and painfully cheap as well. Atleast, it is here in england; it's cheaper than the i5-750 and it's faster.

Hey guys. Got a new laptop for school and as a desktop replacement of my old crappy desktop (lolcelron512ram).

 

Any way I want to know If I can play The Orange Box on it (TF2 ftw!)

 

AMD Dual Core 2.1GHz (Don't have the laptop with me so I'm not sure which processor model it is exactly. Ill edit it later)

Windows Home 7 Premium 64bit

4GB DDR3 RAM

ATi Radeon HD4500 (not the best card in the world I know. CoD4 Demo looks amazing on it, even on the optimized settings, But I'll use powerpoint if I want to see a slideshow )

 

 

I know its not a gaming machine but can it play a game like the Orange Box, for when I'm waiting for my next Uni class or when I am at home bored and don't feel like console gaming.

 

What other games do you recommend for such a system?

 

Do people still Battlefield 2 and CS:Source?

It's perfectly balanced and the cover system is amazing, if your units are in cover they take less damage. The amount of damage they take depends on what your standing behind if your behind a bush you get a small bonus to damage resistance if your behind a wall you get a huge bonus. This makes the game more tactical.

 

Other: Total war series, age of empire series (excluding 3) and rise of nations series

 

Soon to be the best ?

Bollocks, Torchlight does draw a lot from Diablo (like 500 other titles), but it's obvious they taken their own route (as much as the genre allows).

Another Diablo clone planned for 2011 release is Dungeon Siege III. I'll probably end up buying this one too just to see how Obsidian's efforts go with it. Apparently it's a multiplat (360, PS3, PC) but I hope it still uses the top-down view that was in DS1 and 2.

Been playing a bit of old-school Blizzard games (classics like Warcraft, Warcraft II, Lost Vikings... et cetera.) and Rise of Legends.

 

Thinking of getting eXperience112, Syberia, perhaps The Longest Journey - something to that effect, anyway. Does anybody know of any good games influenced by Art Deco, Streamline Moderne, or Expressionism? Anything stylized that's not steampunk or cyberpunk bullsh*t.
