And thank you for the information on the processor.

If I was you I would ask for a second opinion tounge2.gif

I don't have that chip, but it had good reviews like here.

Also, that card costs almost the same here, some 20$ more. While CPU is almost 30% more expensive here, so I'm guessing it's a good deal.

I'm assuming your mother board has PCI-E slots so there shouldn't be any problems. What model is it, just to be sure? If you don't want to reinstall the OS, I would suggest at elast removing all the current GPU drivers before the actual upgrade and REVOKE licenses on any games you might have installed/activated because when you upgrade all the activations will be void.

I have that chip. However my PSU is broken cryani.gif

Also, I suggest getting something faster for your GPU. 9800GTX isn't that great. If your willing to spend that much, get something here. And an E8500 costs around $190 on Newegg.

Ah yes, the glorious 216, it's been serving me VERY well, I'd highly recommend it. Sorry about your PSU.

Sorry about your PSU.

I just received news that Newegg accepted my RMA and my PSU will be here soon. YAY!

I also purchased a new hard drive since this one is is making weird noises. Pretty nice one too.

One thing; I'm going to install a fresh copy of windows 7 on it; should I go for x64 instead of x32?

I'd go for the 64 version, so you can get and utilise more RAM. I'll be doing the same.

What about compatibility and other things? I heard IV doesn't run on x64.

IV runs just fine on Vista x64 here.. Only things that won't run are 16-bit applications. Oh, and unsigned drivers. But even if you for some reason need to install that there's a workaround for it.

If you only have 2Gb of RAM there's no reason to get a 64-bit OS.

@leik oh em jeez!: I'm going to be buying 2 more soon(maybe even 4). It's only a $40($65) upgrade tounge.gif

@jelly: But what about Windows 7? Also I heard many people complaining about compatibility with Vista x64 aswell.

If you will be getting more RAM, go for x64.

And Vista x64 has excellent compatibility with programs, games, etc. Same goes for 7. You should be fine man. There aren't any lack of drivers or anything as enough and more drivers are available for x64 operating systems.

driver issiues are just about gone now. You'll be able to find 64-bit XP drivers just as well as 64-bit Vista drivers. If anything, hardware with bad support released before Vista should have XP x64 drivers even if there aren't any for Vista.

Thanks.

I am thinking about doing a slight overclock for my E8500, since most people can get them to 3.8 and up easy with the stock cooler.

Currently it's at:

E8500: 9.5x333 = 3.16 GHz

I read that I can increase the FSB to 400 safely giving me 3.6 GHz. I will do so at increments of 20 running Prime95 each time to make sure. Do you guys have any suggestions on the Vcore and other settings? I have read a tutorial but it's still a bit confusing.

Keep the Vcore below 1.3625v, that is the absolute max for 45nm (I think, its disputed, but that's defiantly safe)

If you buy a cheap and good cooler like the Xigmatek S1283, you could get 4Ghz easily.

Also I heard many people complaining about compatibility with Vista x64 aswell.

For me it worked fine in most thing I tired on it.

Some older apps won't work, but in my case that goes only for some older version of Nero, a very old version of BS player and VLC player (they have compatibility issues with the Aero/whatever theme).

What's up with those changing nick's? I don't get it, you have your member title to change, why change the nick? At least stay in the neighborhood of your previous nick biggrin.gif

Can anyone explain as to why, in Fallout 3, I'm walking by holding W, right? And after about 1 - 3 seconds he stops walking. As if the keyboard is running out of batteries, but it's not.

I put fresh batteries in just to test,

I can hold down my W key on the keyboard for ages and it is beautiful, it keeps going,

and in other games where WASD is the walking maneuver then it works perfectly.

It REALLY bugs me so I've stopped playing it...but I hope to fix it confused.gif

I've also installed the required patches.

I've also installed the required patches.

As I understand it, Fallout 3 is a buggy game.

Try to revert to the original game without the update(s) and see it the problem persists.

So, while on stock, I could just turn the FSB up, right? No need to play with vcore?

CPUs can be overclocked to a certain amount without raising the voltage. For my E5200 its 3.33GHz. So, if I go past that, I have to increase the voltage.

The E8500s apparently can be overclocked to like 4GHz on stock volts. So try 4GHz straight away, no need to worry about frying your CPU as you're on stock volts wink.gif.

That's what I did to my Quad, I left the Vcore alone and just changed the FSB to 333 for a 3.GHZ clock.

Speaking of which, what's the stock Vcore for a G0 Q6600? I can't remember if I changed it or not, but it might explain why I'm getting relatively high temps.

Oh god I really need to learn to actually look before I post, turns out the minimum Vcore for my mobo is marked as grey in the BIOS. How silly of me. blush.gif

Okay, I'm up to 3.2GHz (356x9) on 1.325v, should I try to go higher or not? I'm estimating that the max temps gonna be 56-58 degrees.

Oh sh*t I jinxed it, lost a thread. Back to 3GHz I think. sad.gif

Talking about frying, what a good program to monitor temps? Or does CPU-Z have it?

CoreTemp is a brilliant app, tells you the temps and loads of all cores, the Tjunction, and pretty much all your CPU info.

Ah, thanks man. Not much point for me to do it, my system's stable as hell.

CoreTemp is a brilliant app, tells you the temps and loads of all cores, the Tjunction, and pretty much all your CPU info.

I've been using RelaTemps and FanSpeed (or whatever it's called) and those gave me high temps on my Q9300. Like 60 on idle and above 90 on load? Then I installed the util that comes with my MBO (Gigabyte X48) and that SOB gives me only the CPU temp, without any core temps, but that one never crosses 66°C (I did some quick Prime benchmarks). Then I went in BIOS to check what the f*ck was going on and (on auto settings) it showed me the Vcore in excess of 1.5V while the standard Vcore for this CPU is a bit above 1.2V. In fact people have managed to run that prick on 3.3GHz on stock cooling with a small voltage raise.

When I raised my FSB from 333 to 400 it showed me 1.3V (on auto). Then I tried the manual setting and lowered the voltage to minimum 1.12V but it still showed me something above 1.2V in BIOS. After setting everything back to normal the PC couldn't boot up anymore so later on we found out that the CPU died and I'm now waiting for it's replacement.

Any theories on what the f*ck was going on there? Could it be the CPU was messed up and it was giving the wrong signals to the MBO or is it the MBO the one that's f*cked up and it fried the CPU? If it's the first one great, one bad CPU less, but if it's the MBO then it's going to toast more CPU's.

Hey guys.

What are the upcoming games for PC? I really need some new games. I've played IV and Fallout 3 for way too long tounge.gif.
