Ah, almost 24 hours and the first troll yet has to be seen.

SmellyJelly, I personally don't like the zombies but those vids you posted look very nice. I am waiting for Mafia II (but of course) as it should be grand and I am hoping to see the English version of Space Rangers Reload sometime this fall. If not, I'm taking Russian lessons smile.gif. No, seriously. Also, maybe there is going to be a remake of Mount&Blade, it seems the Turkish team has signed a contract with some publisher and they are probably working on that as we speak. I hope they will not commercialize it, though and keep it open ended but with a bit more content.

Thanks a lot for the invite mkey !

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, I'm glad I don't have to go to the GTA IV section again.

You earned it, pal icon14.gif. This is meant for PC gamers and those that respect PC gaming. There is a lot of BS going on about PC as a gaming platform at the moment, but IMHO it will live enough to see console gaming (the way MS and Sony handle it) die. I only wish we had some sort of logistic support, because that PC GA is a sad joke.

After trying the demo the other day I was pretty shocked to see that I could run it on medium, since my PC is still decent-ish but about 3 years old. To be honest I think GTA IV will be more demanding given that it's a pretty huge game and data has to be loaded constantly.

I don't think so. My guess is that even the fastest single core CPU will be able to run GTA IV. Will it be playable? Probably not, but it will look something like it looks on consoles. You know, 20FPS average and 1024x768 resolution is not that hard to achieve. Remember SA and what you had to do to make it look like it did on consoles? Turn down the resolution to 640x480(and this is still better then that-gen PS but out!), forget about any AA, set the LOD to low. Hell, even my old PC with Celeron at 2.6GZ and ATI9200 Stupid Edition (yes, laugh it up wink.gif) could run that on 1024x768 and still get a playable framerate (depending on tastes).

When we talk about optimization, IMHO Half-Life 2 sets the standard while Crysis is not optimized properly. Hell, it's not optimized at all, but the same could be said about previous GTAs. GTA3 was horrible in that aspect. VC was so so, while SA definitely could do better. Let's hope this time around we'll see a major overhaul on GTA IV with some proper texturing and decent framerate. If they don't plan to make it properly (because IMHO technically the console (PS3 version is the one I played) version sucks) they should skip it altogether. There are more then enough great titles coming for PC anyway.

IMHO an even more important issue are the controls. How will R* handle them? The controls in GTA have never been that gamepad oriented like in GTA IV and this concerns me. There is lame aim and cover system, can you remember any games that had those? Godfather, anyone? What do we know about it? Yes, it had really crappy controls on PC. For example, you couldn't strafe left and right. The WS combination was for forward backward movement while AD controlled the x axis. Let's hope R* will do this one properly. If not, see above.

PC gaming is IMHO not that expensive. The hardware price is going down. For the price of my current PC now I can get a proper gaming rig, while back then I got a mediocre PC. It's all about getting the bestbuy components and skipping most expensive ones which give you a 10% increase in performance for 50 to 100% higher price. PCs are reliable, you can repair minor faults without breaking a sweat and you have the option to upgrade. Games are less expensive and your PC can handle much more then gaming. Security can be an issue, but I will bet you anything that if you stay clear of the odd warez and porn sites you can do without any AV software. I know I can. When you handled that, the only "issue" that remains are the mail attachments which will be taken on the server side of the mail service provider. So the ones complaining about security are the ones that use internet explorer and visit sites to download and install various crap they shouldn't .

Pc's are not really expensiver than console:

-pc have a better price/quality relation.

-When you buy a (gaming) pc it has the newest hardware, noone would buy a 2 years old pc to play a game.

-games are 1.5x expensiver on console

-accessories like HD, joypads are expensiver on consoles (20€ for a tennis racket look alike piece of plastic made to put a wiimote inside)

...

Age of conan: 30Go needed, Do you think all games will need so much space in a few years?

HD TV as an accessory biggrin.gif. A pretty cheap one at that, goes for only 1200$.

30 GiB for Conan? Are they raving mad, or they just forgot to apply some compression method?

Yes big games in the future will always need more, but you get 1TB HD for about 100€ today, if you see my sig I have upgraded one of my machines with one.

You don't have to buy new hardware every six months. I could go out, get me an 8600GT and be set for the rest of the generation. Even if there's an 9800GTXXX out, my "old" 8600 beats the Xbox.

I wonder how long this generation's got left to "live".

When people talk about having to upgrade PCs constantly, it's nowhere near as bad as anyone claims, like people have already said, so long as you aren't bothered about always using the highest graphics levels a PC will last between 3 and 6 years at least; also, Crysis came out, it's not optomized, it's the only game I know of that pushes my machine, and that's because it isn't optomized; I can still play it on high (it's surprisingly smooth even at 20-30fps). I honestly don't think another game will come out that pushes a machine the same way Crysis does for a looong long time, and so what if one does, turn down the settings and play anyway, a priveledge that only PC games have. People say that consoels are better because everyone has the same hardware; that is true, but it's a very very bad thing if that particular hardware setup can't handle the game properly, it detracts from the experience for everyone, and there's nothing we can do about it.

Banter aside, I have a high end PC and a 360, so either way I have the best of both worlds, I just prefer PC gaming.

Everybody does have the same hardware, but it's messed up as manufacturers need to develop a cost effective unit. They need to cut out the "redundant" functionality thusly making consoles even more gaming oriented. This is weird as it seems they would like to turn consoles into some sort of PC. Now the consoles have a HDD, can connect to the internet, one is even supposed to browse the web through a console. Hell, this time around, consoles are even physically getting similar to PCs. Of course they are not upgradeable, in fact the only thing you can replace is the external PSU.

So, we have a x360 fanboy amidst our ranks, eh biggrin.gif?

To be fair, it's easy to upgrade the PS3's HD and without voiding the warranty either.

But this is, of course, aside from the point.

Just finished Mass Effect and dived right in for a second time. I really wish it was mod friendly. What's everyone else playing these days?

I'm "reliving" some old moments I had with Mafia. I'm also going through SA once again with SRT3 mod and "things to do in SA till you are dead" mod. There seems to be some quirks with the latter, so I'm trying to figure it out. Maybe it's just not compatible with SRT3, but they have only a few shared files, so I don't know /rant off.

I'm also playing an odd game or two of PES2008, even though that game definitely doesn't deserve my time. It gets on my nerves but I still find it pleasurable. Like some sad PES addict biggrin.gif.

Also playing Mass Effect. Just on the ice planet with the freaking damned bugs.

Is it just me, or does this seem like a pretty short game for an RPG?

Yeah, it's coming to cater for all those GTA fans that got gutted by R* policy. I don't think SR2 will be a great game, but I do respect Volitions intent to support PC gaming in this way. It only show how R* is wrong when acting they way they are. And it will probably sell on truck loads.

Nice. How is its performance compared to the 360 version?

Currently, I'm doing CoD4 online and Oblivion. Don't really have any games that aren't like 4+ years old apart from those.

SRT's pretty cool, especially when hooked up with ENB. How's "Things to do in San Andreas..."? What does it do?

ENB slows down my machine too much so I don't use it. There is a very nice car reflections mod from DexX, as an asi plugin that works well (here).

"Things To Do In San Andreas 'Till You're Dead" mod has retained the original gameplay but expanded some stuff (added car salesman missions; pizza boy missions and a lot more side missions; peds have been overhauled, cars also; daylight has been tweaked). I yet have to see most stuff. You can find some (a lot) info about it here. You can get it here.

I love it when Console fanboys start saying stuff about our PC's, Like, how they act like their console pwns because it can do HD, yet most of Today's PC's can do at least 1080, or even higher (30" screens for example).

How about some people post their specs and maybe pictures of their PC's? Mine can run Crysis on medium @ 1440x900 and I've got a 6800GS and a Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 overclocked to 2.5Ghz, Limited by the motherboard I had to get.

So you get what, 25 FPS with that setting. You are lucky if you get more then 30 FPS with that, even though its a wonderful machine. Better then mine anyway

Intel Pentium Prescott 3.0 GHz

Abit AI7 MBO

Powercolor Radeon 9800 PRO 128 MB

400W PSU

I don't think you need any pics of that, do you? Runs Crysis on minimum smile.gif but it runs.

I was looking to upgrade (actually buy a new PC), but I just don't game that much so I failed to see the point. I like some of the older titles, so this PC suits me just fine. It's more then enough for most everyday stuff.

Any (new, decent) 24-inch monitor will blow 1080i away. Too bad I'm stuck with my "lousy" 22"... Heh. My TV only does 720p, so I'll stick to my monitor.

My PC specs are:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66 GHz
  • 2 GB RAM
  • Nvidia GeForce 8600GS
  • Windows Vista
  • 19" Widescreen monitor with 1440x900 resolution
  • Blu Ray Reader
  • 1.3 TB HDD
  • 5.1 450W Surround sound

I connected Cable TV to it so it's functioning as my entertainment center so I don't need a TV.

And to answer what games I'm playing at the moment:

  • GTA: San Andreas (inc. Gostown mod)
  • Rainbow 6: Vegas 1 & 2 (1 is more fun imo)
  • Mafia (what a magnificant story)

A flat CRT? Wow. wow.gif Well, anything above 1280x720 is HD, so that shouldn't be hard to reach. PC monitors have had it for ages.

Flat CRT might mean the screen is flat, most crt has a curved front but the newest PC CRT has flat front.

Specs eh?

Q6600 @ 2.4GHz

3GB DDR2 667MHz RAM

8800GT 512MB (I sometimes overclock it)

2x 320GB Samsung 7200rpm HDDs in RAID0

2x 19" monitors @ 1440x900 each

Running Vista, eats anything I throw at it besides Crysis which still performs reasonably well at max settings @ 1440x900. smile.gif

Heh, first, the enviroment is more massive than the one of crysis, and euphoria takes a whole ammount of memory, together with the Real-time damage. And the graphics are better than Crysis, so you'll need a f*cking awesome PC to run GTAIV.

Also, the game is not even announced for PC, so why the hell would you want to make a thread already?
