Yes, but that's like saying "instead of taking my car to work today, I'll borrow the neighbors F16 fighter. It will take loads to take of and land, it's going to be expensive, but I need to develop my skills and the trip is going to take only 10 seconds".

 

Multicore CPUs pack processing power modern PC games just don't need. They are an overkill and can practically only be used to bruteforce game performance. I don't see any reason why a today's game would need that much CPU power, past the death of a GPU. If things are returning to where they were years ago and if very strong CPUs are going to replace GPUs, then yeah, we are going to need as much cores as possible. In this case, 8 cores is probably not going to be enough.

Imagine during the days of DOOM and the like, if devs decided 'Hey there is no way we can make a game with better graphics (for example)' and stopped moving ahead, we wouldn't have the tech we have today.

I know what you mean, I mean just imagine if we lived in a time when the software industry went "Hey there is no way we can be bothered to make a game with better graphics than Crysis" and stopped moving ahead ................. oh wait a minute that has happened

 

Anyway to the reason I am posting, hands up everyone that wants a FREE GAME and this isn't a "dodgy" deal. It seems the developers of Bulletstorm have done a parody of "Call of Duty" called "Duty Calls". You can grab it here :-

The download size is about 750mbs (so even Canadians can take part ... JUST) and specs are ........ well your granny could run it on her old Singer sewing machine.

 

Alternatively if you can't be arsed with the 750mb download then you can just watch the video of the game :-

 

 

 

The game only lasts for about 5 mins so take that into consideration if you are going to download it.

This guy is an inspiration, I saw a thread on the OCuk forums, this guy asking for help with dead space 2, because he couldnt remap the keys for his mouse!

Let's be real, what kind of optimized PC game would need 8 cores to run? I mean, one of the probably best looking games on PC being Crysis tasked my CPU with something like 10-15% on max settings. OK, a faster CPU (memory wise) will may allow you to pull 280 frames instead of 200, but that's not particularly useful, is it?

 

PS, I don't buy into bullsh*t that games like GTAIV are CPU demanding because there is "a lot going on".

Crysis is much more needy for the CPU than you might think. A higher clock speed adds tons to performance on Enthusiast, provided you have very capable graphics cards (plural) at the same time. I know a guy who's SLI 570's are being bottlenecked by his i7-870 massively on Crysis. In other words, it is badly multicore optimized.

In other news, the head of the PC port of AC Brotherhood is spewing the same old bullsh*t as last time:

Apparently they worked extremely hard on AC2 to add good multithreaded performance.. and it's the complete opposite. The game uses the first core at 100% and my other three at around 10% whilst at 40fps. When I added 1.2GHz to my i5's clockspeed, it rose to 55fps. That just proves how bad a job they did with the optimizations on that area and that in fact they did nothing special with the multithreadedness.

 

David Coulombe: On AC2 we did a great job of refactoring the rendering engine to use multiple processors. We automatically detect the number of processors and hardware threads and split the workload appropriately. The rest of the engine (AI, sound, etc.) has been multithreaded since AC1.

Yeah there is quite a call out there for custom controllers for handicapped people just do a search on youtube. I have to say thats the most simple way to head track on PC ive seen!

Lovely, that's what DiRT is supposed to be about. Wouldn't mind a few Lancias like the Stratos. That Gymkhana mode looks sweet too.

The only games I'm looking forward to right now is Driver San Francisco and Crysis 2.

 

Driver is going back to the root style driving only......though I'm not sure how I'll feel about the ability to change/hop out of one car to the next......that might be a bit odd.

 

Crysis 2 in an urban setting will be a lot of fun especially with mp.......

 

Looks to be an interesting year in gaming on the PC................
