The only downside to the Jedi Bundle is that it makes you desperately want Lucasarts to get off their arse and do a PROPER Jedi knights game instead of the crappy force unleashed rubbish.

I thought I was one of the only souls in the world to think this...

i have the same notebook. new vegas runs fine

^ nice mate, hows it been treating you so far? Heard the display screen is a bit sh*t but I haven't had a chance to properly sit down with it. Hasn't even arrived yet, hurry up UPS sigh.gif

it is good to me since i don't tweak any settings. use it for college and gaming,

mass effect 2 runs great

cod4 looks solid

FNV is good since it is an old engine

Warlord, it would be a bottleneck if you expected the same data flow coming from both the CPU and GPU, but you don't. If processors were more "capable" you wouldn't need the GPU, but I think Larabee has shown us something in that regard.

True, but the CPU is what provides the data requiring GPU processing, so right now, with the current floating point performance, you're not getting the performance that most video cards are capable of. So there is a bottleneck caused by the CPU.

But doesn't the CPU feed "raw" data to the GPU for processing? If the CPU was a big bottleneck, why would most PC games use about 10-15% of CPU clocks while doing above 90% on the GPU?

When it comes to ports, they're based on systems that have loads of CPU processing power, but weak GPUs, so it's no wonder that a standard gaming PC will be CPU bottlenecked when the exactly opposite situation is true in PC gaming. It's plausible that heavily optimized PC games would run like crap (yes, even more so) when shabbily ported to consoles.

Look at it this way. The CPU provides the instructions required by video card to render something. Now let's take the i7 965 and 6970 as examples again.

If the 965 is capable of working at 683 GFLOPS, it would be faster than if it were to work at 53.28 GFLOPS right? So if the CPU runs at 683 GFLOPS the GPU will be able to receive data much faster, thereby increasing total performance. Whereas when the CPU is running at 53.28 GFLOPS the GPU will be getting data from the CPU at a much slower rate, and the GPU will basically not be utilised to it's full extent.

That's where the bottleneck is, as the CPU cannot provide data required by the GPU fast enough for it to fully utilise it's processing power, so it has to wait on the CPU.

There is a lot more data bandwidth on the GPU then what flows from the system toward the GPU and backwards. Therein lies the reason we need fast VRAM.

CPU basically loads the geometry info (a bunch of dots), textures and some other data (like type of shader that should be used) in form of some structure into RAM, then waits for the right moment to send that stuff to the GPU (according to the game engine). GPU then needs to do all the dirty vector work, occlusion, geometry, apply shader effects and when the image is done toss it over to the screen. Not a lot bandwidth toward the GPU (especially when you have loads of VRAM), not a lot comes out, but there is a lot of on-site processing being done.

It's a simplified view based on my limited knowledge, but it makes sense. I really don't see why the GPU would need CPU instructions directly, latency would kill any real time rendering process. Basically, setup the scene on CPU then render it on GPU.

Finished downloading Cryostasis today. Damn it runs like complete sh*t considering it only needs to render small rooms at a time. Even on lowest graphics, there is only a performance difference to highest of about 10fps. Most I get is about 50fps average on lowest, 42ish on max and it's really stuttery. I want to enjoy the story, seems good so far but I cant play with these performance issues. sad.gif

Anyone played Necrovision? It's by the same developers (I think?) and I found that really fun. Definitely pick it up from steam if you like Nazi Zombies. That said, I hate Nazi Zombies. tounge.gif Happy new year too guys, remember to stick by those moral resolutions.

Depends what rig you have. If you can run Bad Company 2 on high, you'll be able to run Crysis on medium-high. I run Crysis on High at 60fps, as opposed to 40fps avg on Very High.

Pretty much everyone who played Jedi Knight games share that opinion. Force Unleashed sucks. I want another game with Kyle Katarn.

It doesn't have to be Kyle Katarn... kind of bored of him actually. But just the gameplay from the last two was so damn awesome. They just need to step up with those games. Work out lightsaber battles even more, somewhat more smoother and 'balanced' force power system and also a proper laser weapons gameplay. I always thought shooting was rushed and felt pretty cheap. Lightsaber gameplay on the other hand was always epic.

What did they do with force unleashed? Pretty graphics, 'nice physics' and just some cheap platformer gameplay elements. Sad how they ignore one of the best Star Wars games/franchises ever made.

Mound and blade is definitively worth it, play warband though as it the more final, updated version. The developers probably wouldn't do it, but publishers like to pull moves like that - add multiplayer, name it something else and sell as a separate game.

You can easily get over 60 hours of gameplay with The Witcher if you're into pure RPG's.

Anyway, I reinstalled Bioshock yesterday. It's still the most immersive game I've ever played. It doesn't stop haunting me long after I'm done playing. I only played it for 3 hours yesterday and every time I close my eyes I see Rapture and I hear Andrew Ryan and Atlas. And they tell me "would you kindly"...
