...that's like calling Oblivion an FPS, really. I think Fallout has some tricks up its sleeve.

Looks like somebody woke up on the wrong side of the racecar shaped bed. Listen, I'm only saying that Fallout, by rights, isn't an FPS, it's an RPG with FPS elements. While that may sound like a trivial distinction, the game won't be focused entirely on combat, rather, you'll be exploring, interacting with characters, and going on adventures.

Ok, but the E3 demo showed NONE of that. Therefore I think it looks like just another FPS.

No, I didn't wake up on the wrong side of the bed, I sleep on a twin bed so it would be hard to do so. Also, it's not race car shaped.

Yeah, I agree with Payne. It seems like it's just going to be another dumb-down version of a great game. You can say that it isn't an FPS, by rights, but that doesn't mean the developer won't turn it into one.

They cant show exploration in demo. It would take hours to do that and to really enjoy it you would need to play it yourself. Otherwise it would just look dumb walking around doing nothing. That is why they showed only combat. I personally think the game will rock.

I don't want you to think I'm joining some gangbang on you. I respect your PC gamer opinion.

RANT:

I would say that Fallout 3 will be an FPS game with RPG elements, not the other way around.

And Oblivion is hardly a shooter IMO, since there aren't any classical weapons you can shoot from. There is a bow but it doesn't count biggrin.gif. Oblivion allows you to regroup and go into menu while pausing the game and allows you to choose items and sh*t, but you have to fight in real time.

I think it boils down to this - had Bethesda made Fallout 3 for PC would that game include the time pausing feature for aiming? It was a turn based RPG, but with the direction they are taking, time pausing (IMO) is not an option.

I'll have to read a review first.

No worries. I share the opinion of of a few here that we should wait to see everything in context before making any real judgments.

Bethesda knows how to f*ck up games. The leveling system in Oblivion was damn near broken, and don't forget the trauma they inflicted upon the Star Trek series.

Yet they know how to polish a game, and if they've learned from past mistakes, I'd say we're all in for a treat.

On an entirely different topic, I finally got a chance to play Medieval II - super fun. I wish the game had more integration between the "ruling" portion and the "battle" portion, but I suppose the main focus of the game is the battles. I'd still like to see something like C&C on a larger scale, however; kind of like a real-time version of civilization. Pipe dreams, I guess.

The whole desktop computer is on its way out if you ask me. But so long as desktops and laptops are around, the mouse will be there. It may lose popularity and even become obsolete, but I think it will still be available if not just for gaming.

Mouse is dying

I don't agree, as long as FPS is popular and no better alternatives for aiming, gaming will keep the mouse alive.

Yeah, how do they imaging us to aim on a laptop? Touching it? It's cool for entertainment, though.

The laptop will die before the desktop does. I know for me I'm not going to buy another laptop, but the desktop will see steady replacement. I'll replace the laptop with a much more practical pocketable Centrino Atom platform once those mature.

Why bother with a laptop with 'desktop functionality' that they so often tout, when that ends up negating all the advantages a laptop has? (mobility, weight, size, battery life)

Taking over will be so called gestural computer mechanisms like touch screens and facial recognition devices.

I'll be keeping my mouse, thanks. I don't want my monitor covered in dirty fingerprint smudges or make stupid facial expressions/gestural motions just to operate my computer.

I dont know. If we ever get to the level we saw in Minority Report, that's the day I trade in my mouse.

I bought a cheap laptop for travels, but while I'm home it just collecting dust.

Yep, same, it's for travelling, but I'd rather have a pocketable x86 device that can run all of my software without needing a bag and taking up lots of space. To me, the laptop is the dying platform, not the desktop.

Me too, I can't bear gamepads for PC shooters. Come on, that article was from BBC News, you can't trust them

about technology and games for sh*t.

sooner or later there is going to be a better pointing device but I don't see various touch screens replacing mouses. For example, how would one game on a touchscreen? And I have enough trouble to keep my screen clean as it is.

Mouse for the win.

I dunno if anyone saw this today. But it appears Ubisoft have been very very very Naughty. Hands up all those that think piracy is bad biggrin.gif . Well Ubisoft doesn't think it's bad when it suits THEM. I give you proof that the a patch for Rainbow 6 Las Vegas 2 is just a rebadged STOLEN crack from RELOADED. You couldn't make this up if you tried :-

Lol, Ubisoft sure got some 'splainin to do.

We're looking into this further as this was not the UK Support team that posted this, however if it is an executable that does not need the disc I doubt it has come from an external source. There'd be very little point doing so when we already own the original unprotected executeable.

As soon as we find out more about this we'll let you know.

Hm, seems they're busy looking for a scapegoat right now. dozingoff.gif

LoL

DRM is a bad thing, it only hurts legal buyers. As long as crackers manage to crack it, a simple copy protection is just as good as a advanced draconic resource hungry DRM.

Nice find Charmers.

It really does seem they are hitting rock bottom. Let me tell you, IMO the game development scene is going to get seriously remodeled when the console nonsense stops. This next gen is IMO last gen so we'll see what will happen next. Or maybe MS is ready to stand aa couple of billion loss over the next consoles degeneration.

As Mkey82 says I am afraid we have to suffer through one more console generation. I remember reading many many years ago that Microsoft have a 3 console strategy that goes something like this :-

Xbox 1 = Made a loss, was never going to make a profit ever and was done to enter the market and get the name out there

Xbox 360 = Made to increase MS's market share, consolidate the name and by the end break even financially wise.

Xbox 3 = Designed to be the top dog of the generation, be the number 1 selling console and make a massive profit.

As we can see it isn't going all that great for the Xbox 360 and if the next xbox doesn't come out on top, I can easily see MS ditching the console market and going back to concentrating on PC.s

As for Sony god knows what their plan is, they have been royally kicked in the family jewels by gamers this generation. They were under the impression that people would "get another job" to pay for a $600 console. Instead people just left it on the shelves, I think Sony will keep the PS3 going for as long as they can to try and cover the billions it is losing each year. Meanwhile the PC will keep trundling along doing everything better than the consoles biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif That is why you should not put much stock in "pc's are dying" because in truth it is really the consoles that are on life support.

Anyone hearing about those Radeon HD4870x2s? I might pick one up, along with a Silverstone PSU and that MicroATX DFI Crossfire motherboard to make a killer rig, see if I can get it to max Crysis.

PC gaming will always come out on top, it was the first platform and will be the last in my opinion; it just annoys me when developers give pathetic reasons for a poor or lack of PC port, like LucasArts saying that Force Unleashed is too processor intensive for PC...yeah, somehow I think if the 360, PS3 or even the damn Wii can handle it, my gaming PC might just be able to cut it. confused.gif

I've been thinking of getting a 4870 or equivalent at the end of the year, but first I need a new case and mobo so I can move everything out of this Dell and into something more practical for upgrading.

I'm in need of a pretty intensive overhaul for my system too. Mine is pretty lacking in most areas, but I somehow was able to run Crysis on medium at 1280x1024 with a decent framerate, yet running the equivalent settings on Far Cry it seems my PC starts to struggle with keeping a consistent framerate. How odd.
