Well it certainly seems it's spreading, whatever it is. Maybe we should make some dictionary to explain all this terms that allow us to cope with modern times biggrin.gif

I'll add the wall to first post in this thread.

I'll see if I can get a free MediaWiki site somewhere and we'll setup a "Next Gen Handbook" or something.

Next Gen Cockbook (isn't a typo)

  • fanboy - a person who disregards any fact and refuses to lead a gaming discussion without spouting crap in all direction
  • console whore - also know as console sellout; person, group or a company that decided to side with consoles after having spent years with PC. Their reasoning includes such explanations as: consoles represent a superior gaming device especially the one that pays more, consoles are for mature gamers. etc.
  • Next Degeneration - the process which includes scraping the old generation of gaming systems without possibility to reuse any part of the platform (apart form using a console as a paper weight) and replacing it whit a brand new cutting edge machine which becomes outdated in less then 3 moths after the release. It also includes such features as the need to reinvent the system each five years or so. Foe game developers this means they constantly need adapt to the new platform. After 5 years they have to start from zero.

Tim Sweeney. Who is  it and what did he do?

He's from Epic. I don't know what were his ill doings, as jallar appointed him for the wall.

EDIT: Oh men, this guy is a real sh*thead. He definitely deserves to be on the wall.

http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/36390/118/

EDIT2: This sh*t is priceless

But at the end of the day, consoles have definitely left PC games behind.

lol.giflol.giflol.giflol.giflol.giflol.giflol.giflol.giflol.giflol.giflol.giflol.giflol.giflol.giflol.giflol.giflol.giflol.gif

TG Daily: Broken down, that means today’s mainstream PCs aren’t suitable for gaming?

Sweeney: Exactly. PCs are good for anything, just not games.

Yeah right. Asshole.

TG Daily: What are your thoughts on the future of the PC as a gaming platform? ...

Sweeney: PC gaming is in a weird position right now. Now, 60% of PCs on the market don't have a workable graphics processor at all.

Where do you get those numbers? He must have taken in account all the 10 year old PCs in schools and such.

Tim Sweeney, you sir are a LOSER

Lol, SynTerro, you beat me to it! tounge2.gif

Looks very awesome. Oh man, I dunno how Valve do it, but my hype level is already rising for a game that I know nothing about except that it won't be coming out for a long while.

In any case, where would that be? Looks like a mix of Borealis and the citadel architecture.

So, from the looks of it, the Borealis is somewhere icy and the Combine have already built some sort of citadel-like structures around it.

GTA3Freak-2001

Well atleast the icy scenery will be a good change and offer some hopefully nice particle effects. This time I'll be sticking to the PC version of Ep3 as I sadly got Orange Box/Ep 2 on 360. Don't hit me! Trust me I missed my mouse and keyboard on that one!

Anyway I've just gotten The Witcher and having a blast with it, I figured that despite the Enhanced Edition coming out soon it would be alright to get the original cheap and then just update with the free update offered to those who bought the original game. The size of the update might be scary though, people are speculating 4gig or something. Not great when that is like one third of my monthly cap!

BTW

Microsoft has made it clear that it intends to compete with Valve Software's Steam service. Do you think the industry can support two distinct download-and-community services like Steam and Games for Windows?

Stude: I've been in gaming a long time and I'm very familiar with GameSpy and their relationship with the industry for years and years, and certainly there was a lot of complaining on their part for what Microsoft was attempting to do with Games for Windows Live in particular. But how many games are supporting Games for Windows Live? Are they really a competitor? Is Games for Windows that big of an issue? Why can't they just compete? Do we really need a standard for achievements and online servers?

As long as you plug it in, the game works, and you find the service you need to find, I don't think consumers will really care. Xbox Live is a closed dance card for the Xbox platform. I don't think that methodology works on the PC. Consumers like going to Yahoo and Google. Consumers like going to ABC's Web site and NBC and CBS. Once you touch the Internet realm, I think you need to throw away your notions that everything has to be sealed and closed and locked down tight in order for it to work. That's an excuse. And that's what I consistently hear from Valve, that if developers developed games that just worked, there wouldn't be as many issues with PC gaming right now.

Q: What do you make of Valve's nonparticipation in PCGA?

Stude: I actually expect Valve to join at the right time. That what I dialogued with them about.

Valve is not entirely out of the picture from PCGA, and PCGA does not favour Microsoft and their GfW Live system.

Yeah, it's funny, Microsoft sees all these idiots swallowing their crap like obedient little whores on Xbox, and they think they can transfer that success to an open platform, where people have alternatives. Oh how their initiative will fail. Aren't all GfWL games Microsoft studios games anyway?

Ugh, I absolutely abhor the idea of paying a monthly/yearly subscription fee just to play a game online with other people -- and since it's Live, it'll most like be a bunch of prepubescent, whiny, gangsta wannabes. So, thanks SynTerro, for giving me a list of games that I will definitely be avoiding.

Offtopic: I just went through 20 pages of the GTA IV PC thread and, well, let's just say I'm so very glad this thread exists.

There is something you missunderstand, you don't have to pay to play online with LIVE. There are two types of membership, Silver and Gold.

Games for Windows – LIVE Silver Membership Features

-Single gamertag

-Common gamer profile

-Common gamerscore

-Single player achievements - All titles have achievements, though some share the list with the Xbox 360 version

-Private chat via text and voice

-Common friends list and online presence

-PC only multiplayer including browsing a list of active PC games

Games for Windows – LIVE Gold Membership Features

-All Silver membership features

-Multiplayer matchmaking with friends

-TruSkill matchmaking

-Multiplayer achievements

-Cross-platform gameplay

Silver membership is free, and Gold membership cost $7.99 for a month, $19.99 for a Q, and $49.99 for a year.

Well to be fair whilst I too abhor Games for windows and windows live. It should be noted you do not have to pay to play Multiplayer on the PC. You only have to pay to play cross platform ie play against xbox 360 users. That is no big deal since we want to stay well away from 99% of xbox users anyway biggrin.gif . I don't know what to do about Crysis Warhead myself, I wasn't a bit fan of Crysis. Yes it had fantastic graphics and all that but they didn't put much in the way of a game in there. I get the feeling Warhead will be the same, I will see what happens when it comes out and what else is out that month before I decide. Besides Crytek are no worse than any of the other companies in Mkey82's pic, nothing but money grabbing bastards if you ask me.

I see. Hm, strange, why would Microsoft think that PC gamers would actually pay money to play with Live players? tounge.gif

Well, I'll still be avoiding most of those games on that list, only The Crossing looks vaguely interesting to me, and that's probably because Valve is involved.

Crysis Warhead - Crysis MP sucks anyway.

Juiced 2 - crappy game.

Kane & Lynch - crappy game, can you believe they skipped doing freedom fighters 2 for this crap?

Universe at War - dunno, don't care

Lost Planet - crappy console port - last time I tried this it had Xbox buttons in the tutorial. barf8bd.gif

The Club - crappy console port AFAIK

The Crossing(Will be availible on steam to) - looks interesting, but as you said, Steam game too.

Am I right in thinking this, as I generally don't follow the lemmings when it comes to Console Whoring (not since the SNES have I done that... and never again). Is Games for Windows LIVE a subscription service? If it is then why are they saying they've seen what GameSpy does and want to do the same... so Microsoft are money hungry-whores who want money for providing a service that GameSpy provide for free and they want to introduce this to the PC Gamers market... are they seriously that effing thick. As jallar said the PC is Open Platform, so how will they be able to control it.

See this is one of the things that is really starting to bug me when it comes to Gaming these days, most of the publishers are producing games that are 'internet enabled' games which can be fine fair enough, but they don't provide enough of a shelf life as they have next to no single player action involved. These games are going to age very quickly and limit their consumer base as not everyone is on a hyperfast broadband connection (even in the so called developed countries like the UK, US, Canada and most of Europe). Some of us older ones in this topic will remember games going way back before the 'internet era' started and will remember highly playable and fairly addictive gameplaying games that didn't need to played online to get the 'full potential' of the game. It just seems that these days folk are producing games with a multiplayer option just because its a buzz word like HD and 'everyone is doing it' /rant

Multiplayer was easier before they started to lock down and controlling the multiplayer option. Before only the host of a LAN game needed the full game everyone else only needed to install the game and run a multiplayer only .exe file. This was totally legal and very helpfull on LAN parties. Why did they stop doing that, now it gets more frustrating to arrange LAN's because no one owns the same game, and we are forced to look for cracks and not all cracks helps us start a LAN game. I fully understand why they lock down online games, but they should open up LAN a bit more.

edit: A little update on Crysis Warhead

LIVE is not confirmed

Update: Crytek community manager Alexander Marschal has posted on the Crysis forums informing fans that the box art is not final and the "LIVE" functionality is also not confirmed.

"The packshot is not the final version, so do not pay too much attention on the details you see on there. It is a teaser how it may look like in the end. Additionally the "Live" symbol doesn't mean much," explained Marschal.

This makes no sense. How greedy can they get confused.gif So they make a game. You buy it, but if you wanna play it you have to pay each month. Why bother buying game in the fist place. I will definitely avoid those games unless they figure out a way to play them online without paying

id Software has always been one of the pillars of PC gaming, and co-founder John Carmack (DOOM, Quake, Wolfenstein 3D) is more or less the company's driving force and a standout industry figure. When he says he's not quite sure what to make of the current PC gaming scene, you can't help but take notice.

Traditionally the company has focused on PC development and bringing new technologies to the market through high-end, flashy games such as DOOM 3 and Quake III Arena. Since QuakeCon 2007, however, id made it obvious it was shifting its focus, claiming its new Tech 5 engine technology was designed with multiplatform gaming in mind. Quake Live for PC was also announced, an updated version of Quake III that's free to play and launched from a browser, a departure from the company's traditional type of products.

We recently had the opportunity to talk with Carmack over the phone, and he filled us in on where he sees id's role in the ever-changing console and PC markets. "While a high-end gaming PC is many times more powerful than current generation consoles and you could in theory do significantly greater things on it, the downsides of the platform are having to support multiple generations of different hardware [and] driver interface layers. I've got all sorts of details I could go into about comparative performance on the PC relative to the consoles on current id Tech 5 stuff but it comes down to developing games costs tens of millions of dollars now and the focus just has to be on the consoles where you've got the chance to move more millions of units there. The PC can at least still be profitably supported on there, but it'll be interesting to see if that continues to trend downward."

Carmack believes there's still plenty of opportunities for profit on the PC, but right now it's an issue of identifying exactly where they are. "World of Warcraft obviously showed there's incredibly successful markets available on the PC, they just probably don't look like the traditional shooter games that id Software had made in the past," he said.

During the course of the interview Carmack made an interesting mention of a all-new Quake title, but explained that currently no concrete plans had been set. "At this moment, and nothing's ever set in stone with us, but we have been looking at a Quake Arena follow-on as an id Tech 5-based cross-platform title, but that is currently not slated right now. We have decided to move ahead with a DOOM 4 title cross-platform."

So will we see a PC exclusive shooter from id that showcases an all-new technology like they've produced in the past? "No," said Carmack, "at least not happening in our current development timeline."

For more on id Software and Quake Live, check out the rest of the interview.

He's not being a pretentious snotbucket like Tim Sweeney, so perhaps not a candidate for the wall.. But still pretty bad. He's bought into it. He thinks consoles are the future, and that they make more money.

Hello, anyone there? The consoles aren't making a profit for their manufacturers. This generation is already haplessly outdated in the technological department, and they won't be able to make a profit on a new one. They're getting dimishing returns for each generation, less units sold for each new damn PlayStation they bring out.

At least we get the chance to tell them to f*ck off when they come scampering back and try offering their console games to us.

Jallar, the publishers, however, are f*cking rolling in it. Like anything else, it always comes down to money. Now, we all know Carmack's a code monkey - he'd be more than happy designing scene demos for a living - so it's not too surprising that the superiority of PC hardware isn't a that large a factor for him. Couple that with the sh*tloads of money to be had in developing and publishing console games, and the only question left is why anyone would focus on PC gaming anymore.

It's simply the state of the market. While we, the gaming populace and PC graphics aficionados, balk at the lowly consoles, the businessmen only see the bottom line.

It's like any other entertainment market - new and exciting isn't what drives the market, it's the old and reliable. Every once in a while we get a gem of stunning improvment, but they are sadly few and far between because noone wants to bankroll a step into the unknown.

To me, I see the future of PC gaming in UGC and community driven projects. The largest strength of PC gaming is the community, the customization, and the flexibility, not just better graphics. I think, as gamers, we owe the PC something in this respect. We need to help, in some shape or form, to build the games we want to see.
