# The most accurate GTA map comparison ever!

Hello mates! Here you can find a very detailed GTA map comparison. The following post is some kind of report, where I'm gonna explain you step by step all my calculations in the whole time-consuming process (It took me circa 1 month to complete this task! O_O).

First of all, I want to present some well known for GTA fans assumptions and prove if they're really correct. Here they are:

1. The GTA:VC map is bigger than the GTA III one.

2. San Andreas in GTA:SA is circa 14 sq miles(36 sq km) size.

3. The cities in GTA:SA are compared by size like this: Los Santos > Las Venturas > San Fierro.

4. The GTA IV map is around half a GTA:SA map.

5. Los Santos in GTA V is around the size of GTA IV's Liberty City (with Alderney of course, but remember! Alderney in fact is an another city and even in another state, but in this case Alderney will be included as a Liberty City's borough, so luckily you won't be confused ).

6. The GTA V map is 49 sq miles (127 sq km) size.

7. Los Santos is the biggest city in 3D Universe.

And there will be TWO types of comparison: by total area and land area.

NOTE: The GTA V map unfortunately wasn't uploaded in original resolution (4000x4000), but please believe that all my calculations presented below are correct Other maps should be uploaded OK .

OK, so here we go, but I don't know how to start this s**t!

KeWiS, jokes off. Let's get it straight...

Step 1

There are different ways of map measuring. When it comes to me, I use the most predictable method which is running/walking/driving the particular distance (in my case it's half a mile) along the straight south-north or east-west direction. Firstly, I marked one of the characteristical places on every map as a start point. Then, I ran half a mile (checking the travelled distance by foot in game stats from time to time) and after that distance I marked the finish point of my map measurement's unit.

For this comparison I've used 5 maps with different resolutions, so the half-a-mile unit isn't the same on each map. What do I mean? If you draw that unit on each map, it won't have the same pixels length. Let's see this:

0.5 mile unit:

- GTA III = 205 px

- GTA:VC = 365 px

- GTA:SA = 200 px

- GTA IV = 845 px

- GTA V = 265 px

For the area measuring it is vital to establish the area unit, which in this case is 1 square mile. As you might notice, we just need to double each pixel length given above and square.

1 sq mile unit:

- GTA III = 168 100 px

- GTA:VC = 532 900 px

- GTA:SA = 160 000 px

- GTA IV = 2 856 100 px

- GTA V = 280 900 px

Remember! 1 sq mile = 2.59 sq km!

Step 2

After establishing units, I've had to find 4 extreme points of each map (4 because of 4 world directions, obvious ) and draw an outer rectangle, in which these extreme points must be situated on its sides. Then, inside this rectangle, I've drawn many, many rectangles, triangles ( ) and trapezoids, but ONLY on water areas! Why? Well, do some maths: Total area - Water area = Land area. Ain't that simple? If not, you'd better not scroll down, I'm warning you

So now having these results we can finally guess how big land areas in every GTA really are!

(Note: 1 sq mile = 2.59 sq km)

GTA III (Total Area) = 3.14 sq miles = 8.12 sq km

GTA III (Water Area) = 1.45 sq miles = 3.76 sq km

GTA III (Land Area) = 1.69 sq miles = 4.38 sq km

GTA:VC (Total Area) = 3.52 sq miles = 9.11 sq km

GTA:VC (Water Area) = 1.35 sq miles = 3.5 sq km

GTA:VC (Land Area) = 2.17 sq miles = 5.62 sq km

GTA:SA (Total Area) = 14.75 sq miles = 38.2 sq km

GTA:SA (Water Area) = 2.57 sq miles = 6.67 sq km

GTA:SA (Land Area) = 12.18 sq miles = 31.55 sq km

GTA IV (Total Area) = 6.23 sq miles = 16.14 sq km

OK, now we've got the results written. And I've decided to make a graphic comparison either! And that also can't go without calculations! <3

Let's put it by total size. If you want to compare some things to each other, one of them must be the base. It's easy, I've chosen the GTA V as a base, because it's the biggest map in series. So I've had to change resolutions in other maps (maintaining the ratio of course!).

But first we have to find out how much smaller are GTA III, GTA:VC, GTA:SA and GTA IV maps than the one from GTA V.

GTA V / GTA IV = 4.7 times

GTA V / GTA:SA = 1.99 times

GTA V / GTA:VC = 8.33 times

GTA V / GTA III = 9.34 times

GTA V (2352 x 3504 px) = 8 241 408 px

GTA IV = 1 753 491 px
GTA:SA = 4 141 411 px
GTA:VC = 989 365 px
GTA III = 882 378 px

Above we have how many pixels the maps in graphic comparison (total size) must have, maintaining their own ratios.

Finally end of my calculations! Back to assumptions, which are true and which are false? Let's see.

1. "The GTA:VC map is bigger than the GTA III one."

True. Despite of 3 islands, Liberyy City in GTA III is smaller than the Vice City in sequel. It's because LC is quite compact, while VC doesn't have many streets and roads. But on the other hand, Vice City is good developed in south-north direction and, as you can see, none of the LC's three parts is as big as Vice City Mainland or Vice City Beach.

2. "San Andreas in GTA:SA is circa 14 sq miles (36 sq km) size."

True, if we include total size 14.75 sq miles (38.2 sq km). False, if we include land size 12.18 sq miles (31.55 sq km).

3. "The cities in GTA:SA are compared by size like this: Los Santos > Las Venturas > San Fierro."

Well.... These cities don't have any island, so that they should be considered by a land size. And according to my calculations: San Fierro - OK, it's the smallest of them three (size of GTA III's Liberty City). No doubt. But to my surprise Las Venturas turnt out to be much bigger than Los Santos! I don't know if I made mistake right here, but playing GTA:SA I've always felt like LS is more developed and diversed than LV! .... But mommy, I like so much LS False....

4. "The GTA IV map is around half a GTA:SA map."

When it comes to total size it's True (6.23/14.75 sq miles; 16.14/38.2 sq km). When it comes to land size, it's False (3.11/12.18 sq miles; 8.06/31.55 sq km) - near 4 times smaller.

5. "Los Santos in GTA V is around the size of GTA IV's Liberty City"

This one is quite tricky too! Looking at the graphic comparison (by total size), LC seems to be near the size of LS, but I extended the north border of Los Santos (everywhere when I see GTA V's Los Santos map people forget to include Galileo Observatory and Vinewood Sign, geez!) and that's why we see bigger numbers by "City of Saints". Well, maybe not much controversial like the previous with LV and LS, but False.

6. "The GTA V map is 49 sq miles (127 sq km) size."

False, False, FALSE!!! The map is NOT that big even when we include the total size! The land area is ONLY half bigger than the GTA:SA's one! Brutal reality

7. "Los Santos is the biggest city in the 3D Universe."

I'm also dissapointed with this statement that Vice City is above 0.5 sq km bigger than GTA:SA's Los Santos, which seems more diverse and compact. It's really sad... False

To sum up, I don't know where and how many mistakes I've made in this comparison, but I've tried my best and I'm counting on you with pointing me out what to improve. It was a nice experience for me to make such a very detailed comparison like this and maybe I'll use it as a base for my concept map, who knows!

And in the end, I want to point out what could go wrong in my comparison. What are the reasons for such controversial things like:

1. In GTA:SA Las Venturas is bigger than Los Santos.

2. Los Santos in GTA V is much bigger than Liberty City in GTA IV.

3. Algonquin is smaller than both Vice City Mainland and Vice City Beach.

That's just for now. If you want to find out how big is the particular area of each GTA map, please let me know in this thread and I'll consider doing it Hope you all enjoy my thread without any "headache"

It's really amazing how they managed to create such a big map with so many things and details back in 2004 and how it took so long to be surpassed in terms of size...

An excellent job OP! Congratulations, many websites should've done this when comparing the GTA V map back in 2013 lol

Doing GTA San Andreas map in 2004 was a huge task but with a perfect result, that gave Rockstar a deserved prestige, why couldn't they make V's map as good as San Andreas...

Or at least release the HD port to PS3 lol, I miss it a lot

I have updated top post with an assumption:

"Vice City is the biggest city in 3D Universe."

And the conclusion to this in the end of the post.

Doing GTA San Andreas map in 2004 was a huge task but with a perfect result, that gave Rockstar a deserved prestige, why couldn't they make V's map as good as San Andreas...

The answer is simple. In the HD Universe Rockstar wants to create worlds realistically, I mean the world is more natural and similar to their real-life counterparts. Maybe we feel like GTA:SA's map is more diverse than GTA V's, but the older SA had many curve roads and the draw distance was a few times smaller. Furthermore, when you're driving along the grassy north border of Red County it's kinda weird that you see a sandy desert of Bone County simultaneously. And that's why GTA V map seems less diverse because of the natural change of environments. That's how I could explain this

IV's map looks pretty small compared to V's Los Santos. I mean LS is definitely bigger than LC, but it looks too big compared to IV's whole map. I always thought that V's LS is pretty much the same size as IV's map but I didn't know that it's actually noticeably bigger than that.

XCalinX will hate this though, lol.

Well... The results in my top post tell, that by the total size, V's Los Santos is quite bigger than IV's Liberty City, but by the land size LS is nearly 2 times bigger than LC! Yeah, in GTA IV we have much water areas and LS in GTA V is a one piece of land (with no islands), but having played both games I felt like both cities are enormous and I couldn't even guess which one is bigger!

In Liberty City, there are many skyscrapers that makes the city bigger than really is. For example, Algonquin has most of them and I've always got feeling that is a huge borough and learning it from the heart takes very much time! But acording to my results (if my method of measuring maps is reliable), Algonquin (and also Alderney) is smaller even than Vice City Beach and Vice City Mainland separately! O_O Kinda weird...

And Los Santos has way less high buildings, so that R* expanded the rest of the city to increase a "huge-metropoly" feeling. And that's why LS is bigger than LC.

Conclusion: ROCKSTAR KNOWS VERY WELL HOW TO MANIPULATE WITH SPACES

Calculations took me couple of weeks and that post took me 5 hours to make I just wanted it to be accurate and clarified without any misunderstandings.

I'm afraid I will not do this, because:

1. Past GTA titles don't have distance travel measurement and even stats.

2. I'm not planning to play Bully.

3. If I had PS3 or XBox 360, I would measure the size of the RDR map. For now it's only a dream

Man R* made VC bigger than LC in 3d era which is absurd if NYC is larger than Miami. Hope they don't repeat the mistake when they make HD Vice City

1. GTA III. Upstate Liberty. It's in the minimap, playable or not, the dodo don't care. Does it make it bigger then VC? How does upstate Liberty alone compare to places like shoreside vale or bohan.

2. North Yankton. Once again a little trickier to define, but possible

3. The 2d games. Besides china town wars(which is LC from 4 without Alderney..... So Liberty city proper) there is the original, 2, and Advance. Advance is heavily based on IIIs map, and 2s is split up into sectors.

1s could be tricky, with lots to calculate. Besides the whole map, you have to tell us how big each city is(fairly simple, almost the exact same, tiny difference in land size due to streets, and small change in water area) although some(like 2d LC) could even be further sub devided.

Come on, give me the true scale of Grand Theft Auto

2. The thing with North Yankton is that you have to use a trainer or a glitch to reach there I guess ;S Or during the prologue mission of GTA V. But it's the same thing with the upstate in GTA III - there's no accurate map of it, so it would be harder to estimate the size of the town.

Hah, I see you like my previous comparison but as I did write then - it might be very hard to calculate GTA 1 and GTA 2 cities' sizes accurately, but maybe if I find a good method then I would think of doin this stuff again. For now I have to figure out how I manage to run GTA 1 and 2 on Windows 10 xD

I knew Rockstar were bullsh*tting when they claimed V's map was larger than SA, IV and RDR combined. SA and IV possibly, but RDR as well? Not a chance.

Comparing pixels isn't an accurate form of measurement as each game has their own scale. We need to compare using the actual scale of them and the only actual %100 accurate way to do that is to fully (I mean fully including all props and stuff) port all of the maps into the same game at once.

Until someone does that there will never be a truthful answer to the age old question.

I've since made a expanded version featuring EVERY SINGLE TOWN/VILLAGE/HAMLET/GHOSTTOWN, MILITARY BASE, AND BODY OF WATER, IN THE SERIES. Plus North Yankton. Yeah. I just haven't edited it yet.

Also, trying to hire one of those two big Size comparison YT channels to make a professonially edited one using my measurements(well their mostly mine, thanks to LE SQUARE and especially KeWiS for a few big ones )

On the plus side, this could be my ticket out of Micro channel and into the Mini/Tiny channel category!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEEEHAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
