Can Vice City work without the 80's?

Recommended Posts

GTA-Biker

It can work, but it has to expand.

Vice City itself needs to be bigger, and the map needs to extend south to the Everglades and north to a Rockstar version of Orlando. That would work well and make the location fresh.

Most people miss VC not just for the 80s, but also for the empire building story. If they bring back the ability and buy and develop properties again, then the game will still also feel fresh, without the 80s setting.

While I agree that Vice City could work in some other decade,in my opinion the 80s is a major reason why I'm nostalgic about VC and VCS.The Miami Vice/Scarface atmosphere and the soundtrack full of 80s hits are a big part of VC/VCS nostalgia, along with good story and gameplay features. If R* makes a game set in modern VC,they should definitely make a few radio stations playing 80s music (maybe one with pop and new wave similar to Flash FM, Emotion and Wave 103,and one with rock and metal similar to V-Rock),and return a few iconic vehicles from VC,like Testarossa-Cheetah, Countach-Infernus, DeLorean-Deluxo...,for nostalgia and as a reference to VC and VCS.

I also agree they should expand the map to include some countryside, swamps and a few smaller towns around Vice City.

Oh I do agree - the 80s is major pull for VC and without it VC loses some of its magic.

That said I feel Orlando and other Florida stereotypes/pop culture have never been tackled by Rockstar and could really freshen up a new VC.

I still maintain that some of the nostaglia for Vice was due to property developing as well as the 80s. Would VC have been so enjoyable without this side to the story?

Its something Rockstar has largely failed to replicate in subsequent GTAs and is a must for GTA VI.

Sure, Vice City was a great game, and while I love the 80s I'll love a modern day Miami game, of course with expansion :)

Some Florida based things not related to Miami would be cool to see.I would personally like to see an event based on Daytona bike week that would be held in one area of the city and would last for a part of the story (similar to LS riot in GTA SA).It could make an interesting subplot related to bikers, with members of The Lost MC, Angels Of Death, Uptown Riders, as well as civilian bikers and maybe some new local biker gangs all roaming the neighborhood, various motorcycles parked all over the place, bars in the area playing rock and metal for the bikers during the event, and starting a fight with a biker resulting in a massive brawl between gangs. It could include missions for one of the gangs, such as stealing some bikes from a rival gang, breaking the truce between two rival gangs (maybe TLMC and AOD) by stealing some biker's vest and starting a fight with a rival gang while in disguise, side activities like bike races and stunting competitions...

Honestly yes, if they included the Miami+Florida Keys it would definitley work.

I wish it can take some inspiration from this show:

Absolutely. I genuinely think it's both the logical option and the sensible option. Add in a fictional Orlando and possibly A fictional Caribbean island and we're onto a winner (and the Everglades too).

The thing is Orlando is nowhere near Miami and all the way in Central Florida. If you're going to set a game around South Florida the map needs to be based on Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, The everglades and Maybe throw in Key West and the Florida Keys not Orlando.

Nothing happens there and is damn near a carbon copy of the boring parts of Broward, just more boring... And definitely no Orlando.... That place is the most uninteresting place on earth, it's literally only Disney World... Something more like Miami, South Broward, the Keys, and Everglades would be perfect...

This is the map for my interpretation of how a current-gen/HD remake of Vice City would be (nix the Keys/Locks). I've now finally fully added every neighborhood in the Vice & Brevard County areas. Tell me what you think...

My thoughts exactly. That would be like adding San Fierro to a map of Southern San Andreas.

Or adding Las Venturas to San Andreas state  . Just kidding.

Rockstar are more likely to make Vice State rather than a parody on South Florida, hence why I considered Orlando.

Don't get me wrong though I see your point fellas - its dull and not particularly "GTAish", its just ripe for Rockstar parody. Perhaps some fictionalized Disney World would be enough, rather than Orlando itself. To be honest, I think they're more likely to do a fictional southern city, such as New Orleans than Orlando.

Money Over Bullshit

The more you think about it Vice City would actually be the perfect setting for the current time period. The stark contrast between rich and poor in a city struggling to survive after the bubble burst, the emphasis on the coolness of black ghetto culture and SWAG and the massive shows of wealth in the instagram generation could all be captured perfectly in a modern day Vice City. They could also easily incorporate all of the best bits from previous titles. The retro neon glam of the original Vice City, the ghettos and country side settings of San Andreas, the celebrity/club culture of GTA V and The Ballad of Gay Tony and (hopefully) the rich story of GTA IV.

MOB, you are placing a lot of faith that Rockstar will deliver on that 'Package', especially with your latter-most Option.

San Fierro worked without the 70's, but it would had been a smash if it had gone into depth about all the prominent culture sprawling back then. Same goes for VC, it could work in a different time period, but it would have to be different from the original in order to work.

For me, the only way to make Vice City work without the 80s, is to set it in the 70s.

The Cocaine rush of the 80s is the whole reason the massive development happened in Miami.

70s Miami was just an average southern town with heavy old folk population and very low crime rate. Not much of an interesting setting.

Maybe it's my love of Burn Notice and the Bad Boys movies, but I feel that a modern day Vice City would be amazing and present so many narrative options.

It would work, but like the one guy said, you'd have to make the skyline way bigger, along with the city itself.

Though I personally love the 80s charm of the original VC and VCS, so it'd be hard to part from that stereotype of VC being 80s Miami Vice.

I think L.A. is one of those places that could be parodied in any era, San Andreas was about the "Gangsta" culture and GTA V was more about the Hollywood culture.

And I really preferred the "gangsta" culture to the Hollywood one which was kind of cringeworthy. They should have focused more on cartels imho, Madrazzo was the ideal villian for that. V was really missing the criminal vibe.

My problem with Present Day Miami is that it will just feel very similiar to the last two games. The american satire that has been such a big part would be rehashed again, the cars/clothes etc. would be similiar. The same old smartphones, internet & in general social media crap etc.

If we get another GTA set in the past again it would feel much more refreshing. Especially with the level of detail GTA games have these days.

It would be a bold move, maybe too bold because I really doubt Rockstar will do it.

Yes. I'm tired with VC being solely associated with the 80's.

EDIT: Look, we had Vice City in GTA1 and it was in 1997. It centered mostly around corrupt politicians, cops and Jamaican drug dealers. Vice City was literally the worst place on Earth in that game. And it worked.

Sure, LS doesn't exist only in the 90's and neither VC exists only in the 80's. Since Miami irl is full of cops and undercover agents, they could tell a story of a thug struggling to succeed in crime in the city.

Could it work? Probably..but I for one am sick of the modern era for GTA. It's just going to be the same satire and jokes we've heard before, same cars, same fashion, same smartphones/social media culture and bad modern music resulting in another disappointing soundtrack. I'm dying so much for R* to go back in time for GTA VI that I couldn't care less about the setting but I know they won't because they want to keep this HD universe going..

I don't see why not, but it's got to be more than two islands. Rockstar should take hints from movies like the Bad Boys series on how to bring Vice City in the 2010s.

vice city definitely wouldn't work in todays setting because everything is just... ugh. :dozing:

I would say a 90s setting because I love the feel of nostalgia vice city gave me but since san andreas we've already had a gta game with a nostalgic 90's setting. I think a hi-def vice city set somewhere between 1999- 2002 would be a good vice city setting. that was a good era in florida it was a time before south florida started to feel plastic and soulless.

no we don't want to play a gta IV Version of vice city. we don't need another sad sack as a protagonist. we also don't need a vice city set in the modern era with crappy music and annoying pop culture.

I like what I like and I don't want your fallen dream. Vice city is based on my home town and miami is a party City filled with celebritiesand night life. if vice city was in a modern setting it would be gta V all over again with bad music and internet age social commentary we've had enough of that sh*t. I don't see nothing wrong with a bright colorful setting vice city was beautiful it looked and felt just like miami Edited by SmokesWithCigs

saying that GTA IV was boring, makes me think, that you missed the whole thing. its like calling Godfather movie boring, becouse it has no shallow, pg13 humour like Vice City, its long, too much dialogs and no explosions.

basically, dont want to offend you mate, just think you should try some ubisoft games, they should be well targeted to your demands.
