GTA IV & EFLC

GTA IV and its episodes are all set in the same city, but at the same time, each had its own distinctive feeling to it. From the dull and cold weather in GTA IV, to the dark and somewhat yellowy TLAD, to the bright and colorful TBoGT. Which game had the best atmosphere and why?

I don't know.

Personally, it's a tie between IV & TBoGT with IV taking the edge. I loved the grimy, dull atmosphere in IV, but I like to think that's just what Niko's seeing. You could say TBoGT is the real, true colours through a normal person's eyes. But IV does it for me.

I like TBOGT a lot, this party night atmosphere, going to the club, night life and everything but I prefere GTA IV, this side of LC with niko is amazing.

I am going for GTA IV.

It has the best Middle Ground Atmosphere of the Three Games.

Eww, not by a long shot

As much as I love TLAD's atmosphere, IV strikes the perfect balance.

TBOGT as well. It captures the true nightlife feel of LC.

IV and TBOGT IV pretty much showed the city through the eyes if an immigrant it was dark and depressing NIko was chasing a dream and it was just that a dream. What I liked about the atmosphere in TBOGT is that it took us back to the same streets of IV but showed them in a different light in IV and TLAD you would pass by Massionette all the time and ignore it in TBOGT it's the one of the hottest nightclubs in the city the focus on the LC nightlife was great.

TLAD also has a good atmosphere if you're into Biker stuff

Voted for TLAD. I love this dark... and apocalyptic feeling it has. I started TLAD yesterday and was overwhelmed by how awesome the atmosphere is compared to other parts of IV.

@Mr. Farenheit and Zello,

I love your theories that the atmospheres only reflects how each of the protagonists views the city.

It explains why nightclubs are only present in TBoGT, as Niko and Johnny would simply choose to ignore them, and they most probably despise such places, too (as do I). It also explains why TBoGT atmosphere is so happy and cheerful, considering the game is almost a comedy, as opposed to IV and TLAD's dark and moody storylines. Good thinking :)

My vote is for GTA IV. The blur on consoles is kinda iffy at first, but that game just oozes atmosphere. It really does make you feel like you're in New York during a chilly fall, and if you find the default look too "grey", you can tweak settings to make it more to your liking. And back to the blur, I dunno if I can really explain it, but once I get used to it I actually quite like it. It makes the game look a bit more "real" IMO.

TLAD retained that cool atmosphere, but I don't dig the yellow-ish filter so much. Still, it's not hard to get used to and it does suit the game's darker, gritter and more squalid storyline.

I liked TBOGT's brighter, sunnier and clearer atmosphere, but it didn't really feel like autumn to me. It feels more appropriate for New York in the summertime IMO.

All three representations of LC enhance their respective games, but if I had to choose it would be between IV and TBoGT. That yellow filter and washed-out colors fit TLaD's story perfectly, but it isn't the kind of LC I like to explore and immerse myself in for a prolonged amount of time. I like TBoGT's more vibrant palette and especially how it got rid of a lot of blur and bloom, but it is true that more darker and grimy style fits LC better.

So yeah, the conclusion is that vanilla IV is probably my favorite. The only thing I don't like is, again, its awful late 00s video game blur everywhere. Otherwise, it's perfect. It has that grit, but still can be bright and colorful on sunny days, the perfect balance.

You can actually enable and disable the blur from Graphics >>> Definition ON/OFF

(personally, I like the blur, it makes it more realistic on full screen)

You better keep the definition OFF unless you want trees to look like sh*t and see jaggies on every corner.

At first, it was TBOGT for me. I couldn't get into the piss filter TLAD has covering it.

As time went on, I realized that TLAD is the best of the three, with TBOGT coming in second.

TBOGT and IV should have looked the same. TBOGT was very clean, the colors popped more to me, but it could be a mental thing. IV is missing the clarity of TBOGT and the uniqueness of TLAD.

I think that weird blur thingy in TLAD is Johnny's struggle with drugs his withdrawal from doing meth

Once junkies try to stop or quit they still have that craving it's still there and never leaves them.

I believe he was doing drugs with Ashley when they were still together before the events of TLAD. She said so after he saved her from that apartment.

played that missions a few hours ago ._.

I like sunny places and sunny weather but sorry, IV's atmosphere just wins. TLAD was too grainy for my tastes and TBoGT was awkward as hell. Taking a gritty city and slapping a bunch of pretty colors all over it doesn't do anything for me.

Ah, back when Rockstar didn't know that PC Optimization was a thing.

LC doesn't nececesarily feel 'gritty', it just feels like New York.

New York isn't very gritty. Especially not Algonquin, the colours actually suit Algonquin TBH.

You could say it doesn't work for the outer boroughs, like Broker and Bohan, but I disagree.

Sometimes the accentuated contrast and the removal of IV's greenish filter just felt like an interesting combo when you were driving in the ghetto. I didn't like Luis, but that was somewhat what made TBoGT.

GTA IV, imo. TBOGT felt too clean while TLAD's sepia filter just made the game look like a Rockstar dev puked over their screen and thought it looked good. Had TLAD been set in a rural landscape, I could somewhat understand the filter thing. Maybe it's just one of those you can't beat the original situations here, but each time I return to IV, the atmosphere is perfect.

Never saw it this way.. thanks for introducing that idea to many of us! That puts a new twist on it all, really. Personally, I really love IV's atmosphere. This city can be really depressing at times, and they did a good job recreating it. Can't really narrow it down to anything specific. I just love how dark and gritty everything is.

TBOGT looks overall pretty cool and clean. The only issue I have with its atmosphere is the pink sunrises and sunsets. Other than it, it looks pretty cool. A lot say that it's oversaturated, but doesn't seem like that to me. V on the other hand seems like that, to some extent.

TLAD has a unique yellowish old movie filter that feels badass, but as much as I enjoy it, it's not the way I'd like to view Liberty/Alderney City as for a long period. It gets tiring and boring after a while, which slowly reduces the desire of making you want to explore the city. Still perfectly captures Johnny's mood and the story, though.

Core IV got the right balance. Artistic just enough for a gritty crime-riddled story. Not too mute and grimy, and yet not too clean or shiny.

And by the way, TBOGT does have filters. It just applies more of softer colors that don't feel grimy.

TBOGT is the best atmosphere since it have beautiful weather system and not ugly grey filter.

Also the pink sky during sunset looks beautiful.

GTA IV and TLAD looks very dull and colourless but GTA IV looks somewhat decent on bright day.

TLad has the worst atmosphere of not only of the three but  in the whole series.

The yellow filter looks horrendous on high brightness and it looks even more horrible in the evening with eyebleeding bright sunlight.
