Vino-G
I have been wondering what kind of time setting other GTA fans would most like for the next rendition of the series. This isn't meant as another speculation thread, obviously the next game will not be released for some years to come and I imagine that another Red Dead game might be the next major project in the Rockstar pipeline given the incredible success of the previous title. But growing up playing through all of the GTA series, I have always thought one of Rockstar's greatest achievements, particularly with Vice City and San Andreas (and Red Dead for that matter) was their ability to pull off the setting and ambiance of those locations in those time periods and make them so convincing. Don't get me wrong, I loved the dark flavour of Liberty City in 4 and the cheap decadence of modern Los Santos, but after two modern day games in a row, I feel that the next title now desperately needs to be set in a past decade in order to keep things fresh. Although I literally have no opinions on locations at this point. Obviously the online, despite it's problems, has without a doubt been the biggest success of the HG era so far, perhaps at the expense of single player. But I accept that any future games will need to be able to offer the same wealth of online features available. I just imagine that the kids might not be so happy losing their modern weaponry and chromed up hyper-car garishness for say 1980s tech and mulleted up garishness from an era they've probably never even acknowledged the existence of. As a veteran however, and as I inferred in the title, I personally would be extremely disappointed by yet another modern day based GTA game. Edit: Thankyou to whoever moved this thread to the correct section btw as I was unsure. BlackSnow176
I wish they could do game set in the 70's somewhere in San Fierro. With lots of classic rock, blues and jazz. Perhaps with two playable characters (male and female). The male could be based on Steve McQueen. I would pick that anytime to a Vice City game set in modern day and with a ton of C.R.A.P. (computer recorded autotune pop) on the soudtrack. Already got a theme song for its first trailer Yes!!!!!!!!!! I honestly loved the Vice City soundtrack, it set the period well and had variety as did San Andreas. Alot of 80s synth rubbish but you can't argue with She Sells Sanctuary. Agreed on modern music but hey, the main musical loss has been with the lack of catchy comedy music such as the San Andreas country tunes and Toto. From Elvis Presley and The Beatles... to parodies like Nicki Minaj and One Direction I meant the loss to the GTA series rather than music in general, to try and keep this on topic, but I share your sentiments for sure. The 90s was imo indeed the last time both America with Nirvana and Britain with Oasis, had truly great guitar bands high up their respective mainstream charts. Back on topic, a 1970s GTA would actually be amazing, although i'd definitely probably vote for a mafia Casino based Las Venturas over Fierro. American Viking
Honestly, I'd love for Rockstar to set the next GTA game in the 1940's and it's story to revolve around the Mafia. Sure, there's already games centered around the Mafia in that time period - Godfather and Mafia come to mind - but I'd love to see Rockstar's take on it. The problem being setting a game that far back would mean they had to design a whole new everything pretty much, from vehicles to weapons, language, hobbies and pastimes, etc. and I highly doubt they would do all that for a one and done game if they had no plans on making more than one in that time. Algonquin Assassin
I would only like a GTA set in the past if it was the 1970s, but I wouldn't oppose to another modern setting. I'd actually love to see a modern VC as it would make things feel more complete since LC and LS got modern makeovers. Alexander
^Yes, modern VC. Mostly because the old VC was awesome but it felt like III's LC. But hey if R* decides to make it in the past, that could work.

Vino-G
I suppose things are more difficult given their complete abandonment of the 3D universe characters, not so much protagonists but side characters for sure. But in regards to cars, there's enough classic and muscle models to have a pretty good head start on the 70s or 80s.
Luddite
I have long promoted this concept because it would do away with: -GPS -Internet -Cell phones Same reasons why R* prolly won't do it. Ivan1997GTA
I do agree how the next game shouldn't be set in present day. I'd like the next game to be in a 70's version of San Fierro or Las Venturas, late 80's version of Vice City or mid-90's version of Carcer City. GTA-Biker
I would love a setting in the 1980s again,GTA VC and VCS were really good games and I´m very nostalgic about them.I would like to see how would HD version of 80s Vice City look like,or maybe 80s San Andreas or Liberty City would also be interesting. I would also like 1970s setting a lot,I think it´s recent enough that it would still feel more like GTA than Mafia, and that decade was never seen in GTA before,so it would be something fresh to work with.70s Las Venturas or San Fierro (or both on the same map, like in GTA SA) would probably work well. Tycek
If there is any bit of the company we used to know and love they should make at least one game set in the past, especially in the '70s. If they could perfectly capture the soul of the '80s with VC and VCS I am more than sure they could do it again with different eras, especially '70s, which aren't depicted in the games quite often. Second game set in present day (GTA V) was already a bit too much for me, as the jokes were forced and dull and the game focused itself on hipsters and government corruption, which are not topics that would fit GTA very well. I also believe that another game set in present day will be even worse, since the society is getting more pathetic and stupid. If they could put Las Venturas in the same game and maintain the quality and attention to detail, it would be just one of the best games ever. Lakitu
Agreed. I'm a latecomer to GTA series (I've only really enjoyed the HD Universe games, although as I didn't play IV until 7 years after release, it felt set in the past) and I really want to see the past in HD. A 70s/80s city would be awesome, could reuse cars such as the Dukes, Stallion, Regina, Sabre, Sabre Turbo, Voodoo etc Vice City would be awesome although I would like to see a city with countryside again like V Vino-G, NotAHipster and B Dawg

Aquilus
How would you guys feel about a GTA presented in the 1950's or 1970's? Sorry the title got cut short. I'd say say 1956 or 1975 or 1976 would be a good setting for such. If i had to think of a city for a 1950's Grand Theft Auto it'd be a counterpart of Chicago since mob activity there was spurting from the 1940's through the 1950's and it was bad. But for a 1970's GTA I'd say Liberty City. Much like the real NYC I'd guess that the 1970's would be a low point for Liberty City since Heroin and crack became and epidemic in this time period and spread on into the 1980's with no sign of letting up till the early 2000's. What do you think? I think music for these times would be interesting. I'd like to hear some Sad Wings of Destiny on LRR> Sorry bout this, reposted it from a thread that got shafted to here. GTA-Biker
I would also love a game in the 70s,mostly because it would have a bunch of classic cars and bikes, they could return pretty much all the pre-80s vehicles from GTA 4,EFLC and 5,as well as make classic versions of some other vehicles (Infernus-Countach,Windsor-E Type,Dominator-classic 60s Mustang...). Also, late 60s and 70s classic rock and 70s classic hard rock and heavy metal on the radio stations would be awesome, that would be another reason why I would love that setting. And also,70s were a good decade to make a story about crime,R* could make a story about lots of various gangs,if the setting would be San Andreas, the story could be about Las Venturas mafia (could be made after real life mafia in Las Vegas),about San Fierro Asian gangs (something like the Golden Dragon massacre),about how some biker gang started to get involved in crime (something like the biker stabbing a guy at a rock concert in Altamont),about how some Los Santos street gangs formed (Families and Ballas could mirror how the real life Crips and Bloods formed)...
