So I have a question for you guys.

My wingmen and I typically never go after ground targets(unless provoked). We just have the attitude where we know we can really screw up the game for people if we wanted to, but why is it necessary? I kind of want to take the same approach with air traffic. I never go after airplanes, but its the H-27's and the other P-996's that concern me.

This may seem like a fairly stupid question, but lets pretend passive mode doesn't exist. How would you confirm a friendly(or at least neutral) bogey?

Everyone gets killed. Trust no one.

Someone just needs to show LightningLord how to Merge dogfight, he could be so much better. He has the potential.

ive grown to think that the jets in this game are way too arcadey to be enjoyable. i'd love them but the way the flight physics work kinda ruins it, first of all, the energy retension is pretty much infinite, which means you will always end up in a turnfight which in most cases will just continue for 15 minutes until you make a tiny mistake and you are then blown to smithereens by ray guns

second thing with the flight physics aswell is that airspeed during a dive or a climb or level flight has negligeable difference, which means that vertical maneuvers will just be suicide. also i dont think going at a high speed compresses your maneuverability, you just throw a series of cobras if you pull in high speeds until you've slown down enough to resume tokyo drifting

third is the missiles. they are pretty much best used as nuisances, since they dont even try to lead their target, and the lock-on mechanism has been broken forever.

something like this works good for GTA but i dont fly the jets as much anymore since ive noticed how little there is to them in the long run. I still like to do the occasional stunt tho

I can agree to a couple of those items mentioned, but as for some of your point there is respectable debate.

Actually, after taking a second you are correct on all of those points. Except your point on compression, on a steep dive that is still an issue.. but debatable.

You might have noticed I put a section of your point in bold. I feel like even though you're still correct what you said is a bit too simplified. I'm telling you(coming from too much experience) that once you get in touch with those that represent the pilot community(at least on x1 and 360) it can be a lot of fun. I am speaking specifically on behalf of the dogfights. Yes, they can potentially last 15 minutes.. I have even seen one session where one dogfight lasted an entire hour.

It can be an incredible learning experience for the select few that dive into it, you learn a unconventional skill that you can utilize on all sort of games and consoles.

I totally went off topic I'm sure, but you probably see my point. I suppose I might also have too much pride in it as well.

Also, how the heck do you people kill target with missiles without homing?

Practice.

thanks for the reply. i havent really been to a pilot community, but i have a few hundred hours spent in jets. dogfights in gta can definitely be fun and intense, but the arcadeness means that stuff that i would expect in a dogfight can be kinda loose or wacky. for example rudders have pretty much instant response which means that if a hostile jet is closing head-on, and you try to roll out of their guns, they can slam the rudder and catch a lucky hit by spamming, which really negates skillful play at a situation like that. i've seen some nice clips in this thread where people manage to pull actual manouvers instead of what usually is necessary for survival, which is knife turn hard at corner speed. in a more controlled environment it works i suppose, but anyone who had tried to pull yo-yos or loops or even scissors, were quickly in my guns, and i could never get it to work out for myself either.

You're right about the feel and physics but I'm not in it for a sim. I do it for the speed rush. I love futuristic racer games like star wars: pod racer, quantum redshift, fzero and not many more. Sadly there isn't a huge demand for these types of games. Player blips are, to me, usually just an intelligent checkpoint that i hit and the finish line is a higher kd and kudos from crew/friends and lamentations from those who couldn't catch me. The jet is, as someone remarked, the end game in so many ways.

Eta- I'm also a COD fanboi so this satisfies the shooter aspect for me too. Gta 5 really is my favorite game to date.

Not to mention WipEout dude! Best futuristic racer released in my opinion. Can't believe Sony shut them down...

When diving, make sure your exit speed is at least 60% of your entry speed, to help avoid stalling and counter fire.

That takes alot of luck because despite how good a player is to hit a moving target at that speed and height using guns not missiles is very difficult without having homing on.

It's so disappointing when the scenery is not rendered or when you hit your target but nothing happens. These are the biggest issues I have when flying jets. Sometimes you fly so low and still don't kill your target. Or you hit something that rendered just in front of you. With lag it gets even worse.

If the player is driving a fast vehicle down a road try aiming the jet's cannon a few seconds ahead of where they're going to be. The cannon explosives happen a few seconds later on the ground.

Killing people with jets is so damn costly. I pay at least 100k in insurance almost every time I get on it.

Just put all of you money in the hands of your second character. Problem solved.

I withdraw all my cash on my second character. Freeroam events provide plenty of money to keep you airborne and stocked with ammo.

Then just wait until you get about 200k coincidentally from bounties etc... and bring it back to your second character. It will add up.

Would some of you jet experts be up for a "friendly" 1v1 deathmatch dog-fighting?

I'm a noob when it comes to jets, so I'd need someone to fight me and point out my mistakes.

If you have a headset, that would be all the more awesome.

If whoever is up for it, please leave your username here or via PM, and I'll add you.

Jet pilots out there, where do you live? I used to live close to the airport in LS. Now I live in Paleto Bay. Perfect place to live. I can call my Hydra without worrying about other players and when heading back to LS, just grab a Lazer at the fort.
