What is your POV on theism and vice versa?

What is the soul ? What's it made up of ? Or is it even a there ?

I don't believe in the soul. Because it doesn't make sense how we have blood pumping to and from our heart to keep us alive, and a brain to function so that we know how to move our arms, and how to live, yet when we die, a little part of us flies up above. In what form? And somehow, we need our soul to survive as well? It doesn't make sense to me.

That's why I've yet to see evidence of ghosts. Some reports say they're in physical form, some say they're transparent, some say they're just completely invisible. Until I encounter the ghost of Walt Disney, I'll bite my tongue.

Do you think we have a spark in all of us ?

Spark? Well, we're made from stardust. So, that counts.

Why do people assume God is a man floating around in space ?

Because that's basically what he is, lol. Everyone knows he resides in the sky. If he didn't. We'd be hi-fiving him on our way to work. Some people believe God created the universe. Some say he is the universe. People choose which ever is easier to understand. That, or personal preference.

I know it says in the bible God created man in his own image but what are we truly ? Are we more than just a biological body ?

Now, you're just deriving biology from a quote where God mentioned that we were made in his likeness. It doesn't work that way. God probably meant that we carry personified characteristics from him. At least, that's what I understood.

I'm an atheist, but I'm not sure if I can comprehend the separation between a machine and man. What makes us actually able to feel ourselves and our surroundings versus a robot that we say could just mimic this kind of behavior. A very advanced AI that doesn't exist yet could very well pretend to be a human successfully and we couldn't see the difference from the outside. Biology is basically just self-maintaining machinery when you think of it, but what gives the spark to life and the so called soul?

Actually now that I think of it, it's probably just some electromagnetic bs in your brain. Still freaking weird though. The universe in general is just weird. I guess this post was more about general philosophy than religion.

And on a unrelated subject:

Why do people assume God is a man floating around in space ? I know it says in the bible God created man in his own image but what are we truly ? Are we more than just a biological body ?

So what do you think ?

Also:

Persionaly I believe in a omnipresent God. A God that is present everywhere at once.

I just don't see how any of these questions are relevant in my day-to-day life. I simply don't care. Also, these questions are fallicious. It's called the 'God of the Gaps'.

This from Wikipedia:

"God of the gaps" is a term used to describe observations of theological perspectives in which gaps in scientific knowledge are taken to be evidence or proof of God's existence. The term was invented by Christian theologians not to discredit theism but rather to point out the fallacy of relying on teleological arguments for God's existence. Some use the phrase to refer to a form of the argument from ignorance fallacy.

This is like that conversation you have with your best friend after you've been incredibly drunk, and it's starting to wear off enough that you can form a cogent sentence but you're still buzzed enough to be existential.

We're speaking biblically, not literally. When you judge characters from fictional books, does that mean they have real life counterparts?

Jesus Christ as a person did exist. I think there's actual scientific proof of that, but whether he was a miracle maker and the son of god is a matter of belief.

As an history bluff most stories from the Old Testament cannot be proven and most likely did not happen, also many of the tales are shared by other cultures and religions (Like the tale of Abraham) which suggest that some of them date from as far back as the Iron Age.

On the other hand, theres at least one mention of Jesus by a Roman historian (Tacitus?) And the Talmud also alludes to him as a sorcerer and heretic. As far as i know only two things are certain; he was baptized by John The Baptist (also actual historical figure) and was executed by the Romans.

Tacticus never specified who he was talking about. "Christus" isn't very descriptive.

Tacticus lol.... Its Tacitus, one the greatest Roman historians, and he actually said that the Christians where named after Christus and he was executed by prefect Pontius Pilatus. I think that is descriptive enough.

And if you want to doubt about the authenticity of a Roman historian that hated the Christians and happily described how they were tortured then you might as well dont care about any of that, and prefer to believe that none of it ever happen, which tbh is not that bad of an opinion to hold

Menstrual Deranged

I refer to myself as an agnostic humanist. I was born and raised Mormon but never fully accepted it as it felt wrong to me. Later, I dappled in Unitarian Universalism, Buddhism, Wicca, and a few others. I learned a lot and have more respect for some religions over others. I'll occasionally attend Sunday services at the non-denominational Christian church my mom goes to just to keep her company even though she knows I don't connect with organized religion.

Though I could go on and on and create a giant wall of text on this subject in general and how I feel religion holds society back from advancing forward, in the end, I am like what most people on here claim to be: tolerant toward others' beliefs until they start telling me mine are wrong or shoving their beliefs down my throat. As a nurse, it is my job to respect the beliefs of others, but I admit that it's a challenge sometimes when I feel like it is affecting a patient's well-being or hindering important care activities.

Recently I found out a Catholic hospital near me refused to do a tubal ligation on 33-year-old woman with brain tumors who doesn't want to risk getting pregnant again. I have a huge problem with that. HUGE.

Can you have (a)theist friends?

Do you judge someone strictly on their beliefs?

I for one being an agnostic theist, I don't care about what someone believes. As long as they don't shove it down my throat.

1. I have both christian, muslim, and atheist friends.

2. No, I do not judge neither homophobes, racists or nazists, christians or muslims strictly on their belief.

Personally, I'm an antitheist, meaning I believe that religion poison our politics, our morality, and our whole thought-process. It's a totalitarian lifestance and I'd prefer a society with no christians, muslims, jews, or any religious person. Religion cannot coexist in a civilized society.

Religion cannot coexist in a civilized society.

Not sure I entirely agree. Religion can certainly exist within a civilized society, but it's secularism that defines its role.

I recently watched a decent debate between the late Christopher Hitchens and Tony Blair, and secularism is where they seem to find common ground. The real debate is only about 30 minutes or so, if you're interested.

sh*t man, I guess the last ten thousand years didn't happen.

Religion poisons the wells for our morality. Once secular moral beliefs are either completely abandoned or changed, religion holds onto them out of dogma - reglardless of the consequences of doing so, even if the consequence is death. The latest example is marriage equality. With no religion our morality could proceed much faster without being halted by irrational nonsense.

On the second point, religion poison our politics. In the U.S the presidents always suddenly support a local chuch or anything similar for that matter. Politicians use the masses of religious people to earn votes. This is indeed very problematic because what always happen with religion is that it either enforce the religious beliefs upon everyone by law, or, claim reform laws so that religious beliefs receives a special status in society. None of this is done by reason and evidence; its done by appealing to the will of the religious sheeps and the irrational dogmatic beliefs. It totally ruins the whole democratic process.

On a third point, religion halts scientific research and spread superstition. It kills women, men and children.

In my own country, Sweden, one thing is for sure; Islam have brought brought intolerance and superstition (aswell as islamic-based terrorism and open threats to the democratic society) and the Swedish state is funding it. I wish muslims would choose to move to a diffrent country. Muslims along with racists is the biggest threat to Sweden in modern time. Only the fact that most muslims do not support same-sex marriage is for me sufficient to label them as uncivilized savages and my urge to destroy this filthy religion is stronger than ever. I never vote for a party which has a muslim in it in the same way I don't vote for a party that believe marriage is reserved between whites only.
