I think you have to press triangle or Y when it zooms in on the TV screen to turn it on.

Here in America I can plug in 20 TV's, turn them all on and watch 20 channels at once.

no bill here, but we pay a audiovisual tax collected in the electric bill

It's because we have to fund the BBC by law, as those channels don't have ad breaks.

Well that makes a bit more sense. We have crazy long AD breaks on our channels, unless they are pay-to-view channels like HBO, Starz, Cinemax and Showtime.

 

But still, having to pay a TV license, or audio/visual tax, sounds insane to me.

It's insane and annoying because I know that BBC services sold to other countries have ad breaks. I don't watch much live tv except for Football events and don't have a cable or satellite service either.

We only need 1 license per house, we could plug the same 20 TVs in and as long as you had a license you'd be covered.

It's still around 150 quid per year or £1000 fine and court appearance for deciding not to.

Its one of those things that you are 'meant' to pay, but when it comes down to it there is no way for them to actually enforce it, I have had them come round to my house multiple times requesting that they come in to make sure I have no tv's connected and I always refuse to let them in, they cant legally get a warrant so as long as you dont ever willingly allow them into your home they cant do anything, Im 32 and have never ever paid for a tv license.

The UK and South Africa share most laws. we also need to have a TV licence to own a TV.
