Good Karma or Bad Karma

Many games made today have some sort of karma system that determines the reputation of your protagonist (like Fallout, Infamous, Watch Dogs, ect.) And choosing a certain path may cause differences in a game's storyline.

So, when playing these games, do you go to being the good guy or the bad guy?

Me, I am a neutral character but will always do my best to be a good guy. For example, in Fallout 3, I won't be afraid to loot if I am running low on supplies, but I wouldn't nuke Megaton.

I do whatever helps me get an advantage. I generally play nice, but for example in Fallout 3 I nuked Megaton. Burke offered me a lot of caps early on so I just did it. Gave me an advantage early on. Which made me completely evil, but i managed to become a wasteland savior by the end. So It really just depends on the circumstances. I'd say I'm neutral.

Bad guy

Mass Effect, Fallout, you name it I'm always the bad guy

I find it a bit more entertaining as the bad boy the story is always better characters feel a bit better when you play as the good guy the story always gets a bit boring for me

I guess I'm neutral. I always tend to be the good guy in games such as Mass Effect, Fallout, TES, KOTOR, Fable etc, trying to save or help everyone and so on (outcome is more satisfying for me that way), but I also lie/steal/cheat and whatnot. Depends on my mood, character and reward.

I've tried to be evil in all these games many times... can't do it for some reason haha.

First playthrough I'm 95% on Good Karma/Good Guy, after that I do another run and go for bad.

I tend to play the good guy, but that's only because I feel as if there's a lot of uncertainty that comes with playing the bad guy. The choices that don't seem so obvious, however, usually have some sort of consequence to them, so I'll usually make a decision that falls in line with the context of storyline.

Game devs usually make use of common archetypes. For example, in Black Ops 2, you're given a choice to kill the antagonist at the end, but what do most self-righteous crusaders do? They let the enemy live and bring him to justice. That's the obvious or "right" thing to do there. In GTA V, it's a bit different, at least within the context of the storyline. We're taught that everyone is inherently imperfect, and therefore, better to let Trevor and Michael live than any of the other situations. It's like the Trolley Problem from your Ethics class but with a criminal twist. Yet, even GTA V's decision-making process seemed quite obvious, which was kind of a let-down for me.

Usually the good guy. Which may be quite funny, considering I tend to like morally ambiguous "gray" protagonists in narrative-driven games. But once I get a choice in an RPG, I skew much more often toward "Paragon" options. Maybe because so many games paint moral choices as black/white; good/evil binary decisions, so it can be quite challenging at times to play truly gray character. You're either saint who saves children and pets puppies or complete devil who burns down villages for kicks and eats kittens for breakfast.

Good Karma, playing the hero and solving problems to me is what makes good games satisfying. Even in GTA , I've always avoided killing civilians. I often feel bad when I do.

Fallout, I was the good guy always. Sure, I sold a slave to get into the Falls but it was for a good cause. I executed all the slaves to make up for the Bad Karma I got slaying the Tenpenny Ghouls and blowing up Megaton(After getting everything there)

In Watch Dogs, I kept Aiden's reputation up high as killing innocents seems out of character for him and Ray/T-Bone

In Skyrim, I'm a complete asshole. Same with Mass Effect, it has a reputation but I didn't give a f*ck I just liked being an ass.

In Fable, I was good........ except for turning the Orphanage into a Brothel on every playthrough.

Always bad, to the point where i couldn't finish rdr due to having to help the cops with a bounty over 1,000

I don't aim for either unless there is a some kind of benefit for me :p I usually end up becoming a bad guy because it's easier to become bad than to stay good. For example my fallout characters have become evil because I have stolen some items. My current new vegas character is a saint tho because I killed some fiends :p

I always hate these statistics.

It usually always has an affect on unlockables or perks that allow me to have more fun in the game. I don't like being forced to play non lethal or super evil just to get something I want. I always have to read up on it before-hand as I don't want to get locked out of quests and rewards.

If I had the full freedom and option it would be neutral. It's hard to determine good karma in a game where even if you aren't paid for helping someone the reward is in the fun of the mission or the quest. Being truly good in a game would be collecting some pointless item for a character that never got enough and never paid you. If you had to work to feed a character every day, I doubt anyone would bother.

I generally wouldn't want to be a complete c*nt and kill people that haven't pissed me off. But one c*nty orc in oblivion said the wrong thing and that was the only person I ever murdered. I spent 15 minutes trying to get it done right too. Was worth it. But generally stuff like that f*cks up or alters your game.

So in short: Good karma if that is the best rewards and f*cks your game the least. Or neutral if I get pure choice and can kill people I hate and help people I like without losing out on anything.

In Fallout NV however I must have surpassed God because of the feral ghoul glitch, getting karma on every kill. However that works...
