Why people shouldn't complain about having the police in lobbies

Police should stay in public sessions, no question. I do get tired of them quite fast in private sessions by myself or with friends though, and sometimes wish they could be toggled off or at least restricted in what triggers them. The real problem I have with GTA V police though is that they are just not fun to deal with. Evading them is not difficult once you understand their "tactics", but it is not something I enjoy. Big wall of text coming, so skip to the end if you don't feel like reading....

In the Need For Speed games, the raw agression and swarm tactics of cops worked because they also used actual tactics, and the pursuit/evasion/escalation system was well thought out. Taking out a lot of cars triggered a count down for a new wave, giving you an opportunity to lose your immediate pursuers before backup arrived. In GTA V, they are immediately replaced by more cops, your wanted level immediately escalates, and there is nothing gained.

In NFS, the cops start out with baseline cruisers, and steadily upgrade to faster and heavier vehicles as your heat level increases, as well as using ever more advanced tactics and equipment against you. In GTA V, you simply get more cop cruisers and helicopters with ludicrously fast spawn rates, with the occasional roadblock or spikestrip (which are completely pointless and impotent against the bulletproof tires on everyone's personal vehicle) that sometimes includes a riot or SWAT van. Cops constantly spawn ahead of you and randomly gain turbo boosts well in excess of what their vehicles are actually capable of. They have near perfect aim accuracy in all situations, and shoot to kill even at one star, so aside from helicopters appearing there is no genuine sense of true escalation. To draw another comparison, at high levels in GTA you merely get swarmed by black SUVs and helicopters with machine gunners. In the Saints Row games, maximum level sees you being assailed by military-grade helicopter gunships, APCs with turrets, and even tanks when the military gets involved.

In NFS, when you lose your immediate pursuers a countdown timer is triggered that indicates the time left to evade the pursuit. Games handled this differently (NFS Most Wanted gave you a proximity sensor, whereas NFS Carbon only showed cops that were nearby), but in each case cops would search based on your last known direction and location, which encouraged you to move off quickly and try to find a hiding spot. Finding marked hiding spots not only allowed you to stay out of sight but also increases the cooldown rate, which is a nice convenience factor and reward for dodging the patrolling police successfully. In GTA V, cops simply spawn around your location, and hiding anywhere typically results in the cops magically gravitating towards your location for no reason even if they last saw you a mile away going the opposite direction, making hiding spots a hit-or-miss affair; sometimes you will get discovered for no good reason, and other times a cop will get stuck outside until your wanted level drops. If you choose to stay on the move, they randomly spawn ahead of you, making it easy to accidentally get spotted again if you are going too fast yet also making it stupidly easy to simply stare at the minimap to see where they spawn while driving slowly so you can change direction. And to boot, there is no actual cooldown bar or timer, merely a set of stars which give no sense of how long you actually need to evade for.

TL;DR: the cops' tendency to show up while you are having too much fun in GTAO is merely icing on the s**t cake that is police pursuits.

I would be completely fine with the cops if they didn't trigger for the dumbest reasons, example:

I'm playing with FedoraTheExplorer, he dies outside the police station next to his car, I get in to stop it from being impounded, he respawns. FTE walks down the street completely unarmed to get near his car, cops open fire on him.

This happened about 7 times in a row, so I would love an option to turn them off.

TL;DR: Cops randomly agroed on a friend 7 times in a row, wish I could turn them off.

Police will never be removed as an option, GTA Online is supposed to be like real life, so Police are always there, it's all about cash cards.

Those $500 medical bills sure do add up...

@OP: You LOVE a game character. If you don't understand the fact that that's weird, you must be one of those people that's married with a game character.

Maybe the 'Cops turn a blind eye' option should be longer and cheaper...$500 per minute perhaps - with the option to buy up to a full hour cop free for $30000 (60x$500)...it's quite clear that there are plenty of people who would pay, but the current price of $5000 for a couple of cop-free minutes is a joke! ..and you can't even tell Lester how long you want the cops to turn a blind eye for! ..at least this way players would have the option but, in true R* fashion, it's gonna cost ya $$$!

That's Shark Cash Cards for you. It should've been $15,000 for 1 minute.

If they removed the police from GTA V/Online I wouldn't play the game anymore.

Some people don't seem to grasp the term 'option'.I'm not opposed to the idea. More options are more options. I just enjoy the element of there being deadly virtual consequences for my actions.

Unforunately, you felt the need to insult my intelligence over an honest statement of how I feel about the cops. I didn't suggest I was opposed to easy-mode. 'Way to interpret my post man. Some people can't seem to grasp the concept of differing opinions. You're an example of it.

People can't take others opinions, gta forum in a nutshell.

" We need this"

No you want this

" You're a Troll and Thread is Trash"

So we can't debate this?

" proceeds to act like a 5 yr old"l

Gets thread locked

Then again the power state of this forum is people whom can't take opinions either.

They're not annoying. I think they're enjoyable. People who are doing all the complaining are just very unskillful who can't seem to grasp the skill to lose them :D

That makes no sense, just because something annoys us doesn't mean we don't know how to deal with them.

Learn how to lose them den its not dat diffikult.

Huh?

Maybe helis should be removed in police chase deyre annoying especially when ure in de tank and cannot lose dem.Or maybe tank speed should be buffed.

And again, what you are saying?

Maybe you should spend less time playing GTA and spend more time furthering your education, or learn how to use a spell checker.

I em seing dat halis chuld bi rimovad from fri rom so we ken askape wit de tenk

I believe police are there to prevent the absolute spawn rape fest this free roam would be without them.

You could just snipe spawning people all day long and never have to think about moving or getting cover.

They're a giant pain in the ass and that's what they were meant to be.

Here's hoping the new free roam gameplay is CnC and we can have lobbies with only player police.

Police would be fine if they acted and scaled-up like real police. But they don't. They act like endless-spawning

with perfect accuracy (unlike in the clip lol).

^^ +10 on this reply! Nails it perfectly.

But as one minor example--even in Watch Dogs (whose AI is horribly borked compared to GTA 5), you get heavily-armored SWAT guys (in bomb-defusing suits) after you when you're holed up somewhere--was a nice touch: "Do you really wanna go home in a body bag?"

I will say though that R* has been tweaking police/NOOSE AI in the background. I've seen them doing things they never used to, such as running up to your vehicle and shooting you that they rarely (if ever) did even several months ago, and I've had numerous four- and five-star cop battles all over the map.

@ OP: Just curious how you managed to get cops chasing you on foot like that for so long without 1) firing a shot, and 2) police cars running you down at the same time? Very unusual, in my experience.

I generally like the cops, because it leads to pure chaos (which is GTA at its best). I also think they add a strategic element to free roam fighting; you have to think about where you position yourself so that the cops don't kill you or soften you up, and you can use them as a weapon to root other players out of certain positions. Sometimes if a guy has me pinned down somewhere, I'll just run back and forth a little bit (but behind cover), distracting him and making him waste explosives trying to get me while the cops pile up and eventually kill him. Once he respawns, the advantage has usually shifted to me, since I've had time to move or get my car.

But I do think they should add the option to turn them off (along with other controls - e.g. weather settings) for private and invite-only lobbies. Why not? It hurts nothing and doesn't affect public free roam.

but I know one thing that they will do if they ever did make it to where we could turn cops off in an invite only session is they would disabled the option to rob stores so people can't make easy money.

You don't understand. We're discussing the option to get rid of cops just like in IV. However, in your post you act like we're demanding to completely abolish cops from the game. That already is enough to assume that you cannot grasp the term 'option'. I wasn't attacking your opinion at all. I never showed any signs of hostility because you said that the removal of cops would ruin the game. Heck that's not what we're even talking about in this topic. We're merely discussing the implementation of an OPTION to get rid of them for those who consider cops a constant nuisance. That's all. It's not easy mode, it's no more annoyance mode. Don't know why you are getting defensive all of a sudden.
