Flachbau
That isn't even the main discussion point of this topic. Nobody cares about whether or not IV or V had better online. Both of them had their downfalls, but just cause somebody likes the other one more doesn't mean it's better.
Richard Power Colt
I think RDR had a more enjoyable multiplayer than GTA V and IV. At least for me. It lacked content compared to GTA Online for sure, but the overall design was better balanced. There was nothing about it that really frustrated me. GTA Online has a lot of good things going for it, but a lot of bad things as well. Some of the better parts are wasted by its broken design. Custom jobs for example can be great fun if you actually manage to find a good amount of people to play them with which can be really hard if you don't have a lot of friends playing the game or you're not a part of a big crew that hosts these kinds of matches. The matchmaking in the game is just terrible. It was actually better in Red Dead although this could be partially, because of a smaller amount of different game modes. It was more likely for people to be searching for the same things. All the thousands of jobs in GTA Online just separate players more and more from each other. There should be a job browser lol. KilnerLUFC
Topic is tl;dr for me, but this is my view. For me, I don't hate or dislike Online Gaming at all. What I do hate though, is how the market is leaning more towards the Online gamers, rather than the SP gamers. GTA V, for me, gets this hate because of this very reason. Gone into lengths in another topic on here on it all, but the basics is, the SP in V was lacking so much. Side-missions were lacking, the story was lacking...the game was lacking in so many areas that previous titles had not. Yet take a look at the online mode, and there's an abundance of things to do, from races to survival. Had Online not been the major audeince target with the game, all these would have featured heavily in the SP game, rather than online. They feature in the SP, but 4 races and whatnot just doesn't cut it for me. The likes of CoD also get the hate when it comes to this debate, because again, they seem to be aiming for the MP side of the game more than anything else. Can't count how many times I've heard the "who even buys CoD for the campaign anymore" line been said. The fact that I've bought many games with 2 discs, and the SP game was disc 2, is further evidence of this change in trend. Like I said, I don't dislike online gaming at all, it's something I can jump in and out of at any point I want, but it's when the game itself is catering more towards that side than offering us anything decent in the single player side. drahnier
I'm with the single player crowd, although i certainly don't hate GTA Online, in fact i've put probably hundreds of hours into it. Also i find the single player in GTA 5 useless so Online actually saves it. The thing is though, a well-written single player campaign is what makes a really great game, and all of the greatest games that i love are single player. Online PvP is just casual fun or a playground for assholes, but a good single player game can be epic, it can have depth and substance. I completely agree that the focus on online multiplayer is ruining modern gaming, also we still get story-driven single player games but those are entirely focused on story now and so the gameplay is bad (Telltale games, Dragon Age Inquisition, Life is strange and so on). The latest really good single player game i played was Dragon Age Origins. Edited November 26, 2015 by drahnier Goldn-Bayse
thatstupidbug
1) it needs a stable internet connection (not just yours, but also your opponent/teamamte). It isn't always possible, sadly 2) there are LOTS of waiting times in lobbies, while sometimes you just want to pick up and play 3) as soon as people move on another game, or the server are shut down, your precious game mode became totally obsolete 4) spammers/glitchers/modders are a pain in the ***** 5) online-only contents (i'm watching you, GTA) those are my main problem. maybe i'm old fashioned, who knows
KilnerLUFC
3) as soon as people move on another game, or the server are shut down, your precious game mode became totally obsolete Looking at you, Bad Company 2! One of the best MP games I've played, then they went and shut down all the servers, but only for the 360, which seemed rather weird. Made more strange by the fact it was pretty much the same time as they released it as a free game on the Games With Gold program. Was made all the more annoying that I had purchased the Vietnam add-on only a couple weeks prior to them them shutting the servers down. Was thinking they need to somehow make it so you get rewarded for progress in previous online titles, but then you run into the problem of people having an unfair advantage over others who've not played the game. It's one of the reasons I stray away from many online titles, besides FPS games. Just feels like you're working towards knowing that at some point, everything will be wiped and cease to exist... Candy_Licker
Well, Online games aren't bad per se. What turns me off is that you often have the choice between endless grinding or constant paying to keep the game going. But what really drives me off are not the games themselves, but the communities. Unless it's an obscure game from a niche genre, chance is 99% that the game is ruined by immature brats, cheaters, hackers etc. Also I'm not really competitive-minded, I'm not the guy who devotss countless hours/ tries to learn and apply any trick so I can hold my ground against hardcore players and freaks. What I'm hoping to see in the future are more multiplayer games that have a sort of create your own story sense to them, something that gives a lot of meaning to your actions and it impacts other players as well. Here's an example: http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/29/5356498/eve-online-battle-sees-200000-dollars-worth-of-spaceships-destroyed I want more online games where such epic events can happen without them being scripted and forced to. Osho
GTA was meant to be a single player experience with multiplayer tacked on, instead of a standalone experience in the form of MMO GTA:O. So yeah, that's why. KilnerLUFC

Spadeflush
I don't hate online gaming, I just hate when it ruins the single player experience. RDR has muiltiplayer that I've never touched, I don't mind because RDR single player was definitely not half-assed. But with GTA V, you can tell the single player experience took a significant hit from GTA:Online. The entire game was designed for muiltiplayer, and the single player side was just tacked on after. Glad I'm not the only one to realise this. Hopefully Rockstar see this and realise this for their next game...Rockstar have always excelled at SP experiences, and V just let me down massively in regards to this.
