I like Miss Los Santos the way it is.. once a year. But it would be nice to have mini awards such as 'Best Dressed of the year' or 'Funniest Female of the year' something like that. So it could include a lot more people and help those who didn't win feel like they've accomplished something.

 

I feel like having an Ethnic Miss Los Santos contest isn't totally needed it just sounds like it would divide us all when we are all equal.

It's not Miss Ethnic Los Santos...it's Miss Ethnic San Andreas. Kinda like Miss America and Miss U.S.A.

 

And the reason why it is necessary is the same reason a Miss Black America pageant was necessary. No one wants to wait 60 years for someone with Ethnic genetics to possibly win.

 

If you don't think it's necessary, don't participate.

Totally agree... It always amazes me that given the genetic heritage and mash-ups that take place in the US that the cultural identity is so fricking homogenous..

 

Plus it means I would be willing to enter one of my other characters that's more fully asian rather than my normal mixed race one..

 

I wouldn't have fancied her chances in Miss LS tbh given that she is definitely not a Misty/whatever clone..

I'm practically cringing at some of the contestants in this contest. Like the attention seeker "VeeraVanderpump" Claiming to withdraw from the competition just to get some sympathy marks, how juvenile.

 

It's obvious that this is just a bonafide popularity contest & to think a contest like this is even taking place within the realm of GTA is absurd.

I'm withdrawing from Miss Los Santos and want my place to go to another. Aside from what has transpired recently, I'm leaving for a month long vacation and wouldn't be able to participate as much as I wanted to.

 

Miss Los Santos was definitely a really fun experience and I got to meet a lot of cool people, most I'm wouldn't have come across with if it wasn't for Miss LS. So at least with me leaving, I get to leave with some awesome new friends. So that in it's self is pretty damn cool.

 

I also learned that with the right conditions, I can take things too seriously. This was meant to be fun, and granted it really was, but I now know that I took some things too seriously and instead of taking some criticism with a grain of salt, I kinda became a bitch. And that's not who I am.

 

What XS created here, is awesome and I give huge props to him for organizing an event and dealing with all the good and bad of it. I'm sure it's not easy, so respect for that. Also a huge thanks to the judges, you guys don't have it easy either.

 

Whether you cared for me or not, that's OK. We're all entitled to our own opinions, it's a free county (at least where I'm from) but I do want to say thanks to those who backed me when push came to shove.

 

I'm glad I was able to be apart of this and honored that I made it as far as I did. So, thank you for all the support, the kind words, the laughs and the memories. I know who I'm rooting for

 

That being said, everyone, let the drama die down, support each other but most importantly, have fun.

I am entitled to my opinion. As I understand yours. But I feel you are being very defensive.

 

I believe that everyone should be treated equally, therefore, everyone should get an equal opportunity, sure that doesn't always happen, which is indeed a bad thing. Miss Black America was from the days of segregation, where only people of white race could participate in Miss America but that was abolished in the 1950's, that's almost 65 years ago and since we've had lots of winners such as Vanessa Williams, who has been incredibly successful, and Nina Davuluri, who is of Indian/Asian American descent.

 

But now it's 2015 and times are still changing, we all praise equality or at least should praise equality. But then in doing things like that is dividing cultures more than need be. And seeing that this is Grand Theft Auto, not Miss America I feel that there has never been such segregation within the GTA community.

 

That's just my belief, that we should all be equal.

Look, I've said enough and I've probably also expressed concerns others have without stooping to personal insults. If people have beef with that then it's their issue. What's gone down today has also been somewhat surprising and probably made me feel a hell of a lot less guilty then perhaps some people think I should feel. And for everyone's information, I do work in RL that involves dealing with inequality and issues of fairness, so it's no surprise I'm probably of the view that if you do something like this then you've got be damn sure it's fair and transparent. Shoot me down all you want for thinking that but I'm not going to gagged for what is probably a reasonable opinion to hold.

 

I'm all for having a reasoned and open discussion about such matters but the moment that it turns to belittling and insults, you've got to call it quits as you're on to a hiding to nothing.

Hopefully the new thread'll start soon (@X S said by Wednesday at the latest), and we can get on with the next round properly, and leave all the recent drama behind in this thread.

Probably would help if people who don't care for this competition maybe just ...left alone, rather than stirring up ill-feeling and casting aspersions at everything from the rules and process of the contest to the conduct of the entrants...

 

At the very least, PM @X S as contest organiser if you've got a serious issue (and you're doing so out of well-meaning concern, not just because you want to watch this entire endeavour 'crash and burn'...) - just jumping into the contest thread and hurling accusations around in plain sight for people to fight about doesn't help anything, does it?

Didn't say you weren't entitled to your opinion. Why you felt the need to express that...I don't know. As far as defensiveness...I think you're projecting.

 

I made a simple statement of fact...don't participate if you don't agree with the contest.

 

It doesn't divide anything to have this contest for ethnic characters. It gives people a chance to showcase their characters who stayed away from this contest for obvious reasons.

 

You talk about equality and how this goes against that. Take a look at this year's competition... Then take a look at last year's competition...then look at the top of the leaderboard.

 

And interesting you bring up Vanessa Williams as she was the first to win after 60+ years of Caucasian beauty being the standard, but she was only half black anyway. Let's not kid ourselves that her win was the same as a Lupita Nyongo type winning. She still had the same Caucasian features that previous winners had.

 

Maybe you're very young or highly idealistic...and either is fine by me...but I'm interested in seeing OTHER characters showcased and based off the couple of comments and likes I have gotten...others are too.

I wanted to try and avoid getting into a debate about ethnicity on GTAForums as it'll never be taken seriously, but surely holding one exclusively for dark characters is the polar opposite of what the anti rasicm stuff is trying to avoid. If there was a white only one started it'd be uproar, yet the double standards say all black is fine...

Hnnng - see, the counter-argument there is that there's actually a hella big imbalance when it comes to both non-white and female representation in gaming, particularly when it comes to player characters that aren't grizzled white 30-something dudes (let's not get on to the virtual nonexistence of LBGTQ playable characters, although considering the casual homo/transphobia that gets flung around gaming forums every so often, that's sadly not a massive surprise...). Same could be said of different cultures, since likewise, so much of AAA console gaming takes place in Western-centric settings - usually the USA or something with a decidedly American tone (for instance, Destiny - set in the future, and the majority of Earth-based stuff is in Russia, and yet the whole thing feels more 'Hollywood' than anything else).

So yeah, put into that perspective, showcasing playable women of colour isn't so much 'excluding white characters' as it is 'let's turn the spotlight on female characters of colour for a change'. Same as the idea of a female-character-only thing like Miss LS - it's hardly arguable as 'sexist against men', when you consider that in so many games out there, you can only play as a guy. Whatever the apparent one-sidedness might be up close, it ends up being a drop in the ocean when you pull the proverbial camera back, and look at the more fundamental imbalance of representation in the bigger picture.

This is a facile argument but not unexpected.

 

And I didn't say all black. I specifically said ethnic...Black...Asian...and other characters with more realistic ethnic features. Those that will not have the prerequisite skinny nose and thin lips.
