This could be a patch for many reasons to fix stuff. For example: Social Club Login Problem

10/6/15 Update: We have received an increase in reports starting around 10/4/15 about GTAIV PC Social Club login errors and are investigating the problem now. Please stay tuned to this page for updates.

Another reason could be the removal of soon unlicensed audio tracks, but i doubt it. Explanation here:

With three more years to go before we hit the 10 year anniversary (the length of time Rockstar seems to license songs for), it doesn't seem likely the update would be to remove songs.

The most plausible reason remains to be the removal of Games for Windows Live. As RockstarNexus wrote in their latest news post:

We've made numerous posts about the impending shutdown of Games for Windows Live. Back in 2013, Microsoft mistakenly announced that they were planning to discontinue the service July of last year - an announcement that was retracted but then later reconfirmed by a developer. We attempted to reach out to Rockstar a few times regarding the shutdown but had received no response. Even Rockstar's own sister company 2K released updates for their legacy titles to remove G4W. July came and went and it seemed Microsoft had given the service a temporary reprieve as a number of popular titles still hadn't been updated. With Windows 10 now out and Microsoft moving their online PC services to the Xbox modern app, it stands to reason Microsoft would want to deprecate the old Games for Windows Live service as soon as possible.

And the list goes on and on... so whatever they work on, it will include some changes and fixes.

Im guessing for people who bought the DLC through GFWL are now screwed and MP is no longer functional? I still have my DLC files backed up but there does not seem any way for me to incorporate these files to work with Xliveless and play my DLCs.

I kind of wish the individual episodes were still available as DLC on PC. Granted I already own EFLC, but I wouldn't mind being able to officially have the IV radio stations in TLAD/TBOGT and vice-versa. Sure, it's possible with Independence FM, but the immersion factor isn't there.

IIRC, if you've bought it, you will always be able to download it. You just can't purchase it anymore, however.

Cant download it, every time I open GFWL client it says error retrieving purchase history. It also fails to sign me in when I run the game. Based on my research, they recently shut down the GFWL server entirely.

Interesting story I got on regards of GFWL. Basically there are posts all over the internet of people complaining how they bought games on GFWL and now cant use em because the service is entirely shut down. So I did some digging around and contacted Microsoft's consumer affairs and moaned about how on the GFWL client download page it says "Although you will not be able to purchase new games, you can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows LIVE client software as usual." but in reality that's not the case because service is kill.

After a few days I get an email from "xbox advocacy expert" being cool and all asking me to go over and describe the issue I'm having with GFWL. We spitball few emails back and forth where I explain how the GFWL servers are dead and I got DLCs I cant re-download and play anymore due to that. To sum up the details, they basically know that the service is dead and don't seem to have any plans on resuming it from what I understood. Though he gave me an option of getting a manual refund check from MS for the DLCs I had on GFWL or just a windows store credit I can use on xbox live or windows store. Basically credit I can use across all MS store ecosystem.

So I got $90 of MS store credit for moaning and bitching because of the 2 DLCs. I'd say its alright that I at least got a response but still sad that we cant play our DLCs anymore. The guy was pretty cool though.

After a frigging year later another update in the SteamDB... i wonder what the hell they're doing... this far i rather have a Remaster with improved Lightning, Performance and greater LoD Distance than a half arsed update.

Remember the beta branch appeared when a VMC Bigfoot Test Comp appeared, so let's remember who and what VMC are:

Lab Testing

Customer loyalty depends on game reliability, so we offer comprehensive in-house testing for functionality, compatibility, compliance, certification, and usability in our secure, dedicated onshore and near-shore facilities. Our experienced test teams blend hands-on play, efficient automation, and relevant reporting to deliver actionable data about your game's performance.

PC Compatibility

One of the biggest challenges in PC game development is accounting for system variety among your users. Whatever your genre, whatever your game engine, your title will be played on everything from high-end systems to those that barely meet the minimum system requirements – and your QA process needs to anticipate this.

Could it be that Rockstar is actually caring to fix GTA IV? (Although hiring another company to do it, as they're dedicated to PC development)

On a different note, I wouldn't be surprised if they were doing this to IV at the same time as Red Dead Redemption. If RD3 has anything to do with the previous one (and it'll most likely be released for PC), it's best for them to fix RDR enough to release on PC too.

Edit: The company is called VMC, the package is called VMC Bigfoot Test. Bigfoot is the codename for the Steam Machines which run Linux. Might we be getting IV for Linux?

if they are planning releasing RDR(2) on PC, they would have some codename sh*t on steam already, like with V, or they are far from releasing it.

They might. It's just not public. In fact, if RD3 is going to release on PC it's probably on SteamDB already. Just not named, just called something like Steam AppID 238723(whatever). They only add the name once they announce it. If you go back in GTA V's page's history, it was there since December 2013 ;)

Ye, but it would be visible under publisher or developer (under that unnamed/codenamed thingy)? Or we would be able to find Rockstar San Diego developer on steamdb (at least).

No, a Steam App that doesn't have any information, doesn't say who the developer is either. Here's an example: (we don't know who this is from, could be anything, but it is a future app) https://steamdb.info/app/495140/subs/

GTA V was like this prior to its announcement, since December 2013, i.e. it was in front of us all this time but we didn't know its ID or anything else, so...

Maybe with the release of RDR HD they will migrate and fix IV on PC. OR EVEN IV HD TOO. :OOOOOOOOOOOOO

I'm almost positive this is actually a port of IV to Linux (and probably fixing it in the meantime). Max Payne 3 also has the VMC Bigfoot depot and a beta branch, Max Payne 3 doesn't really need any fixing, so the Bigfoot part is most definitely Steam Machines/Linux, imo. (MP3 exists on Mac but not Linux)

Ye remember Saints row 2 port to linux? It was same sh*t as PC port (maybe even worse lol)

I don't think they took a year like VMC/R* are taking so far. The beta thing was added in 2015.

3 Updates in less than a week... I hope it's not just a crappy Linux Port, but a full fix, or a the very least removal of GFWL and update to RockstarSocialClub that actually works and not prevent to play online. I would also like to see EFLC to be incorporated into GTA4.
