Advice on creating Travel Posters

So recently, inspired by pinterest, I've been attempting to create a few travel posters and was wondering if anybody has any advice on how to create one in Lightroom 5/GIMP. This is my latest attempt:

As you can tell, it's slightly Doctor Who themed :D It was done by overlapping a threshold-altered layer over the original in GIMP, but was wondering if there was a much better way as I'm not fully convinced by it. Any help greatly appreciated :)
