Since GTA 2 has three disctricts, you guys probaly have one favorite. It is a hard choice actually, every area itself has it's own charm.

Downtown is like most "home" because it was the only map I was able to play when I first played GTA 2 in my younger years. I was 6 or 7 years old and didn't know how to come to the next levels (I knew there was atleast one more because of the gameplay movie that starts to play in the main menu). Here you can find Wellard and Michelli Roadster, but the lack of weapons both for the protagonist and the gangs make me feel like the map is just a prologue for the next ones. But the colors in this map are the best, it is so warm and nice to play it. The jobs are way to easy, even the red ones (Bank Van Theft, come on...)

In Residential I can find my way best, I think the gangs are the most optimal and the missions are actually really nice. The maximum police level of 5 is perfect, you will die if you don't respray your car but it is not like the army that'll kill you in 10 seconds. The Wang Cars is a nice side-mission. In this map you can find every weapon and the design of the map is really cool.

The Industrial is so cold and dark in my opinion, but I like the design of this map the most. The army level destroys a bit of the gameplay, you can't have an endless cop chase like in Residential. Really cool cars here, but why isn't there a "Foo Cars" side-mission? What is the Mad Island, why doesn't anyone say something about it in the game? A mysterious area indeed.

I have to say Residential is my favorite, which is yours?

Residential, because:

-Coolest cars - Meteor, Furore GT, Hachura

-Secret locations - Army base, Disgracelands, SRS Researc Center & Clone center, Alma Mater Prison

-Wang Cars bonus

-Lots of stuff on the roofs

-Great missions (note: "missions", not "jobs" :p)

-Nice, intuitive layout and design.

Downtown is boring. Places are not even nearly as interesting. Lack of weapons. Tanks are annoying, as you can't re-enter them (or this may have been fixed by Vike, haven't tested)

Industrial has some mystery indeed (Mad Island, all the docks, power plants etc.) but it still lacks the fun aspects of Residential. Army can be annoying and the layout is more cluttered, IMO.

Downtown for me, it's because it's got a nostalgic feel for me. I love the Yakuza, Wellard, Miara.

Residential, all the way.

I don't think I could have gotten myself past the first level, but my cousin was over one day and got enough points to unlock it.

After he left, "level 2" was all mine.

So many roofs to explore, the cars were far better, you had an extra wanted level with those sweet FBI cars... always tried to steal one.

But I mean, that all just made getting to level 3 even more exciting. I still vote Residential, but seeing the Industrial District's cars...

They were pretty sweet, especially the Stinger. The garbage truck was always weird looking to me.

And while the military wanted level was pretty hard-ass, trying to run off with one of their jeeps was always a fun goal.

I guess Industrial district was my favourite as not only it's dark and dirty, but also has cool places like Brown Eye Sewage Plant, old coal fuelled power plant and Mad Island (which still give my the creeps) with its steel barricades on the street. I don't think there was ever any district in any GTA that would be comparable to Industrial in terms of atmosphere.

Don't forget about cool cars like XK120, Stinger and Garbage Truck.

I don't think there's a car in GTA 2 called the XK120, maybe you're thinking of the Jagular XK. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Getting on topic here, my vote went to the Residential District only because of Wang Cars. I love all three districts equally.

Industrial because there's this unmarked gang in Mad Island i think and it's fun to mess around with them

I used to like Residential District most but Industrial District offers more challenge and it doesn't feel so familiar.

And it also offers the hardest missions which I like to watch when I want to watch stuff about GTA 2.

I like all district areas in GTA2 but I voted for Residential because this map has:

Nice streets

army base

awesome radio stations like KREZ or Rebel Radio

my favourite gangs (rednecks and SRS Scientists)

and nice looking gang districts

Residential is indeed the most fun level. The only thing that annoys me is the inconsistency of the missions. A green phone can be harder than a red phone in some cases. I think the Redneck first red phone mission is super easy - destroy 5 cars of each gang. Compare that one to the second Redneck mission which may be the hardest of all missions in the entire game if doing it as it is intended to be done. A green phone mission of the Redneck's is running over 50 gang members of each gang with a gang car (kill SRS with Zaibatsu and vice versa). Meanwhile a yellow SRS mission is driving over 47 (?) Z-Men. Redneck yellow phone "Tanks-Giving" is also one of the hardest missions in that level (if you don't know good routes that is) and it's only a yellow mission. First red phone of SRS could be one of the top 5 easiest missions of the level, while yellow phone Zaibatsu "Valdez Alert" is red phone material. It doesn't make any sense. Besides that, Residential is the winner.

The inconsistency of mission difficulty is seen in Industrial too, such as green mission Grand Theft Auto which is red phone tier. Downtown has a consistent curve of difficulty.

I wonder why Residential has so much more things compared to Industrial? I mean all the unique-for-the-level power-ups and Wang Cars. It's fun that Downtown is less open, so you had a lot of new stuff to discover in the second level. But the third level is a bit of a let down after playing Residential.

I believe it might have something to do with the fact that they had to rush some stuff before release. I bet that there was meant to be a strand like Wang Cars in Industrial (I heard some rumors about Foo Cars?), or they could have just ran out of ideas after they put in all the potential into the 2nd area. It's kinda similar in GTA3 where Shoreside doesn't have much unique stuff compared to what you unlock in Staunton.

Talking about the difficulty, Gang War! is a carbon copy of Double Cross Crush! yet it's a yellow mission in the Industrial district, and the 2nd one is a green mission in the Residential District. You're inspiring me now to write up a little guide on how I believe the missions are difficult :P

I always felt that Industrial is standing in the shadow of Residential. Once you complete Downtown and try Residential for the first time, it's a huge difference. New weapons, better cars, more power-ups, gangs have lethal weapons instead of just pistols, special agents, Wang Cars... yeah, it's such a big difference. I can still remember the first time I saw my best friend's older brother playing it and I was so fascinated. When you go to Industrial, it feels so dark and gloomy, almost forgotten. The map's design is flawless. I still think it's the best looking level because of how obscure it looks. With more side-missions, it'd be my favorite level, but unfortunately, it is not even close to be as fun as Residential. I also think the military level ruins the fun. It's just too hard.

Yeah, the true difficulty of the missions could be a nice guide to read. The hardest one I can remember is Penal Ties. I still hardly beat it to this day without doing the "trick". Grand Theft Auto, Zaibatsu green phone of the 3rd level, is probably the second hardest to me. Tanks-Giving is also really hard but once you find a good route, it's pretty simple.

In terms of difficulty and handholding I REALLY like Downtown its so easy and feels relaxing, its also very nostalgic

In terms of the amount of content and freedom I LOVE Residential District but i thing the difficulty spike was a little much

In terms of layout, atmosphere, and design I like Industrial just a little more than Downtown for that aspect but its my personal least favorite of them all

When I think of iconic I think of playing Downtown 70%  of the type than transitioning to Residential and seeing the HUGE difference

Overall I like Residential THE MOST!

Indeed! Downtown has so much nostalgia in it for me. It was logically the first area I played when my dad showed me the game in the early 2000's. It wasn't until I was 7 or 8, I first played Residential and I can still remember the feeling of pure excitement and joy. If you idle at the main menu for a minute or so, a demo will play, showing Industrial. I remember watching that demo so many times, seeing all cool cars, weapons and the design of the level.

In terms of design, Downtown is well made with a balanced scale of difficulty in terms of jobs. A green phone is super easy while a red phone is tough. Yellow phones are suitable for being mid-tier in almost any case. Once you go into Residential, as I've mentioned before, the scale of difficulty of the missions is awful. Another thing is that the kill frenzies are close to impossible. This makes Residential feel a bit of a rush job, just like Industrial that is lacking Foo Cars.

Downtown for the nostalgia.

Residential for the fun.

Industrial for the challenge.
