Doctor Who

Recommended Posts

The long-running science fiction show Doctor Who has almost reached 50 years. On the 23rd November it will be the 50th anniversary of the first time William Hartnell came onto TV screens as the alien time-traveller. Since then there have been 12 actors to play the doctor (including John Hurt but not non-canon actors from specials e.g. Rowan Atkinson) and a 13 actor will be Peter Capaldi who gets introduced on Christmas.

(If you are not familiar with Doctor Who and are wondering how they spin 13 actors in the story the doctor is a time lord and can regenerate when close to death, so then he looks different)

To celebrate the 50th anniversairy there will be a world-wide (ish) special airing called the day of the Doctor

It is set to air simultaneously around the globe on 23rd November 7.50pm UK time (gmt)

They're showing the last episode of the last season on BBC America right now. Forgot how good it was. I really enjoyed that first part with Clara throughout the Doctor's life, showing all the different Doctors.

Tracksuit Hitman

I used to watch Doctor Who a lot before Matt Smith came along. He's talentless and to me, wasted an era away. I'm going to start watching it again once Matt Smith's face f*cks off.

There's some people going over the top with the anniversary. People telling the news reporters that they found love because of their love of the show. To me, that's really sad.

f*cking glorious, I think we got Moff-f*cked about twenty times per-second at the end of that episode.

I would go into further detail but I literally cannot bring myself to spoil what has to be the single greatest episode of Doctor Who, EVER.

In fact, I will say just one thing: That ending...

I thought it was great. There is a beautiful thing, the feeling of all the fanboys watching it at the same time, geeking out at the same time, at the same moments. Millions of people, I think it's safe to say.

O.....M......G! That was f*cking epic! Amazing! Absolutely beautiful. The ending was just...just....touching! Matt's, David's and John's acting were just the BEST! Too good. The way they saved Gallifrey was outstanding and kind of blocked out a lot of plot holes.

I loved that second-long glimpse of Capaldi. Enough to get me good and hyped.

When the guy said, "12... No! 13!" And it showed his eyes, that's what I'm talking about when I got an amazing feeling like a million other people's hearts skipping a beat.

Before this episode, I really liked Doctor Who. All of it's history. But after watching this episode, I am a full on fanboy. (I refuse to use the word whovian, it just sounds ridiculous)

Oh man, that stoked me! The face he made looked very evil and dark.

But what confused me the most was when all 11 doctors turned up on the holographic screen in front of the timelords on Gallifrey, one of them said about capaldi, "12...no 13"!!

This didn't make sense. Matt Smith is the 11th Doctor but 12th regeneration and I remembered Hurt right there. So it came to my mind that technically he is the 12th already. The timelords were playing mind tricks on us lol. And Hurt actually became the doctor again at the end, because they froze Gallifrey in time at the end.

As soon as Capaldi steps in, I think we can expect the Valeyard to make an appearance or even the dream lord who is also another evil shadow of the Doctor.

I f*cking adored that. We even got to see Capaldi. That moment with all the doctors will stick with me forever, all the doctors on those screens, I think they used old episodes too so they look like they did before, or in the case of the 3 doctors who are dead, so they are there. i think even the Eccleston bit was archived footage, otherwise we would have seen him post-regeneration.

"all 12, no... 13" *Capaldi's eyes* glad I wasn't the only one whose heart skipped a beat.

Also at the very end the curator... Tom f*cking Baker, I almost screamed.

Also John Hurt was amazing, I tip my proverbial cap to him, I loved how he reacted to Matt smith's "Geronimo" and Tennant's "Allons-y."

Welcome to the family Mr Hurt, you will eb remembered as the doctor long after you die a lot like William Hartnell, Patrick troughton and Jon Pertwee

Like Yenik I am now a full on Doctor who fanboy, I loved it before but now I love it even more.

@franklinderoosevelt, there were 12 Doctors in their TARDISes, including John Hurt, around Gallifrey. And then Capaldi came in, making it 13 Doctors. So the other Time Lord was saying, "there's 12 (Doctors)... No! 13 (Doctors including Hurt)."

Hurt chronologically is the 9th incarnation of the Doctor, despite only showing up in the show now. But his title is not the 9th Doctor, it's the 'War Doctor'. This way we keep the same titles. So Smith is still the 11th, and Capaldi will be the 12th in title more than anything. But in the show it doesn't happen very often where they need to identify any of them in any way other than 'The Doctor'.

At that exact moment, it was like I could feel the hearts of all the geeks in the world skip a beat.

I absolutely loved the simulcast just for that. I kind of wish I could've seen it in a theater with my fellow... :barf:... Whovians.

Actually, if you watched the end properly, Hurt regains his title as The Doctor and not the war doctor because they technically saved Gallifrey. The time war actually happened in the future, as showed in the episode where all three of them met up. But they all forget what happened apart from Smith. So capaldi is actually thirteen. The story makes sense now. Wibbly wobbly, timey wimey.

And those eyes. Those horrible evil eyes! :O

Back to what I was saying, do you think the Valeyard is set to appear? Or even the dreamlord? Because in the very old episode, where the doctor is in a trial, the valeyard is also with him. The Master tells the good doctor that Valeyard appears between his 12 and 13th incarnation.

I still don't get how Peter made it in the episode. Does this mean once he steps in, after a while he comes back to this place which is his past? It feels weird considering he shows up before smith even regenerates. Also, I think this whole thing has happened already once in the Doctor's timeline. Billie, aka the conscience even tells Hurt that he is their future in terms of the hardest decision of his life.

I know people hate explaining away things this way, but... "Wibbly Wobbly, Timey Whimey."

Well the 12th should know that his power is needed to save Gallifrey, since he saw it happen whilst in his 11th form. In theory, they could've had like 20 Doctors show up there, but the BBC I doubt has any idea as to where DW is going to end up or how many regenerations there will be in the end, what's interesting is that Tom Baker hints he knows what's going to happen in the future, and that the Doctor will "revisit some old faces" (such as The Fourth, clearly) and go on to find Gallifrey. That's got me a bit intrigued.

  • 1 month later...

I'm gonna re-title this topic for general Doctor Who discussion. And remember, unlike the 'Day of the Doctor', the Chistmas special is not simulcast, so please use spoiler tags, at least for the day.

It's times like this where I realize the only downside to living in California is that we are in the last heavily populated time zone.

And Capaldi is in, nto a spoiler, it was made public months ago. Good episode, liked the explanations :)

What did you think of the explanation for

The Doctor getting a new regen cycle? I felt the (Time Lords?) giving it to him just because Clara asked nicely

was pretty lame. It's been such a big thing for like 30 years that that was just eehhh..?

Also, how do you think the marketing is going to go down with the the whole screwy numbering thing.

Was 11, is 13...That makes Capaldi...1...Again? Do you think he'll still be marketed as 12 even though it's confirmed that he isn't?

Good to see...

Amy

...at least one more time.

The regeneration was also very sudden. Kind of a shock.
