Jokes in GTA:O that only Brits would get

No matter how much time I've spent in Paleto Bay, I've never seen that cone on the statue before.

Going to have a look next time I'm online

They got a contract for moving prisoners in the 90s and promptly lost half of them, so it was a topical joke in the original GTA. They're now G4S and do meter readings and stuff.

They're greatest moment came a couple of years ago when they put a surveillance tag on a blokes fake leg

"Brew" = Scots/Irish regional pronunciation of "bureau" meaning "welfare", effectively "Always Unemployed".

Someone beat you to the Father Ted reference dude. Looks like the Town Hall.

It's a short documentary about LS and gangs etc that is sometimes on your apartment TV; I'm not sure if there's a set schedule, and I only saw it for the first time a couple of days ago!

It would be nice if you guys could explain the jokes to us non Britons.

I've been in England several times, mostly to go see the Canaries beat the sh*t out of their opponents at Carrow road.

But also just pubcrawling in London. Still I don't get the jokes, but I want too. I love everything about British humor, Monty Python, the young ones, comic strip and so on, so I'm fairly used to your weird and wonderful humor.

My user name is inspired by the comic strip "Mr Jolly lives next door", which is probably the funniest thing I have ever seen. :)

Going off the list of programmes you've given there, if you've not seen it then you MUST watch The League of Gentlemen, There's a film, but I'd recommend watching the series first. You don't need to but it helps.

Happy watching!

love that show, saw the stage version and freaked the sh*t out of my GF for months with my Pappa Lazarou impression.

@Jollycat Rik and Ade did a show before Bottom that you may not have seen, but is brilliant. check out "Filthy, Rich and Catflap".

They were going to walk 500 miles, not drive it so the award should be for walking not driving. ;)

I wish I could understand those jokes too, I'm curious about the chicken statue :/

There are two things that jump out about the chicken statue. One it's a cock. On a bell. Bellend.

It also has a cone on its head which is a reference to a statue in Glasgow Scotland of Wellington, which has a cone on its head for years. It is now officially apart of the statue.

duke-glasgow_2731515b.jpg

If you go into the art gallery where that statue is then you can buy a statue with a traffic cone on it, and a traffic cone hat for yourself. People up here love that we have a traffic cone on that statue. Every now and then they try to take it down but it's back up in hours. Go google a video of them getting up there, it's a huge statue and the climbing is even moreso as they are usually drunk :)

I just want to elaborate for you foreign types on the "Bristols" joke.

It's Cockney Rhyming Slang - Cockneys are from a particular area of London. They would use this slang.

Examples:

"Apples" > Apples & Pears > Stairs.

"Dog" > Dog & Bone > Phone.

"Trouble" > Trouble & Strife > Wife.

And therefore "Bristols" .... You know.

If you're going to get that anal technical about it then you should at least explain why they were doing it.

Agreed, mostly. I do like that song. I think it was Peter Griffin that made me like it, which makes sense since he's the only thing that could get me to like Rock Lobster.

Does "Tinkle" make sense outside the UK? "Giving someone a tinkle" means calling them on the phone, and "tinkle" is also slang for a piss.
