9i OTD
While I very rarely partake in any form of online trolling, I believe that it is just that. Trolling. I feel as though you actually must have some direct connection to the person for it to count as bullying, because then they can actually carry out their negativity upon your life, whereas if it's just some asshole you don't know then it's basically no different from any other stranger who happens to be a douche. However the example from earlier, where the online trolls/bullies actually got the kid to buy something for no reason, probably does count as cyber bullying because being tricked into spending your money directly affects your life in a negative way. TL;DR - Unless they ARE capable of directly negatively affecting your life, then it probably is just trolling. Fireman
Banter isn't bullying. There can't be bullying while playing online games since no one knows who you are (if they do and stalk you it's called harrassment, might be considered bullying, but it probably started in real life then). You can call someone fat or anorexic but you don't know if they are. What are you REALLY studying? How real life bullying expands to online gaming bullying by the same bully or how anonymous people hurl insults and troll eachother? There's a major difference between social media bullying (personal facebook, e-mails, messengers, twitter) and online gaming bullying (a good question would be if this even exists?). Anyway my experience with competitive* online gaming is that I often find myself in the position of "bully" if you want to call it like that, I insult people consistently, try to make them feel incompetent at the game we're playing and making them nervous with whatever works. Most of it is about making big rants about how bad someone is after they kill me or a huge essay about how much better I am than someone else because of killing them. The other people who are not the victim enjoy these comments and it makes me popular (or it makes me feel popular). I am what they call a typical pub hero. Being a fast typer helps a lot. K20
just like to point out its happening on this forum as well. i've seen it multiple times, specially when you got a "heated" discussion EG xbox vs ps4 threads. most people who do initiate the bullying i assume are young pre-20 aged kids. still not past immaturity. and don't understand the concept of opinion. they see it as "my way is right, your way is wrong, any other way is wrong, i f*** your mum"... if you get my drift. and that same group is in online gaming. where they don't take well to losing. they can't except defeat and overcome this by "verbally defeating" other people. tbh these sort of people sometimes never change, it carries with them into adult hood if they dont ever meet any sort of discipline. experience: wasn't me who had the bullying but there was a discussion on this forum about cost of building a gaming pc, [sometime last year, i'll see if i can find the post] one user gave his opinion and stated the cost effective way of building it. another user replied to him/her by stating not to post cheap comments like that, and that they're stupid and thick etc etc. then said something about their dad. basically all that was said by the user2 was uncalled for. Gnocchi Flip Flops
I see the use of autism-related insults is becoming a thing on numerous gaming forums too, where people try to use it as a way to single people out and make them look incompetent or retarded. As someone who actually might have ASD (I've actually looked into it unlike those self-diagnosing "special snowflakes"), I can't say that it affects me too much because it just strikes me as pure ignorance. But unfortunately, a lot of kids on the autism spectrum do take it more seriously. Edited July 15, 2015 by Scaglietti Spectacus
Fuzzknuckles
I see more bullying on forums than I ever have in online gaming. The stuff you see when playing online is more like schoolyard taunting - it's rude, pathetic and shouldn't be happening, but it's not going to break someone. Though I should think that in groups that know each other IRL, there may be bullying going on there. Forums, however, where you see the same people frequently, can lead to resentments, and that leads to confrontation. When several people have issues with one person, that's where the worst of it happens. Ganging up and bullying as a group. It's horrible to watch. I've seen it, been a part of it, won't ever do it again after a moment of clarity. It's not something I ever want to discuss in detail as it's embarrassing and reminds me of a dark time in my life. I've never been bullied online myself, but I've been party to it happening to others. Eram, Tyler and Gnocchi Flip Flops 3 Signatures are dumb anyway. gooeyhole
Bullying is easy to deal with. It was for me. I was a bigger kid, but I never hurt anyone intentionally - if I was ever bullied, and they got physical, I'd give them a good smack. No, I wouldn't win the fight the majority of the time, but they don't want another good smack again, so they don't bother. Online bullying is funny to me. I guess I understand if it's through Facebook or Twitter, but if you don't like what's being said, X on the top right screen is your friend. Don't know why people hate online harassment yet stay online. I've been ganged up on forums for being a conservative and it's not fun, no, but there's no stopping that. Whatever the majority think is right, is right. Can't play the victim card when your opinion is in the minority. TheFlareEntercounter
A couple of Serbians on CounterStrike Source once gave me a cringeworthy lecture on why I should be ashamed of my Croatian nationality. On AlterIWNET I've been called a hacker (I wasn't, I was just really good back in the day) and told that the server admins gangraped my mother before promptly banning me from their server. Both of these failed to rustle my jimmies.

When it's people you know in real life and it spills into the real world, it can be incredibly dangerous - it leads to suicides. People close the window or log out, but in some cases, those people live just up the street and will carry on harassing people until it's gone too far. It's tragic really, that this is what humans have become. We could be so much more than we are. Gnocchi Flip Flops 1 Signatures are dumb anyway. Not A Nice Person
"Bullies" in online games are most likely sad, I was lucky enough when I started playing online games to have an older brother who told me to never feel bad if someone is mean to you online, because in real life their life must suck if they feel the need to pick on a little kid in a game You have a point, Sayuri. I think research suggests that most online bullies are reserved and quiet in real life. Perhaps they're even the ones getting bullied in real life and they use the internet as an outlet for their frustration of having no control in their own lives. That's the system of bullying. People are always trying to talk down to them and act like if they play video games at their age that they must have no life and must never go outside. That brings me onto another topic. I've also never gotten the obsession with focusing on someone's personal life when it comes to video games. Why is it your business to worry about whether someone is extremely social or not? It definitely strikes a nerve with me sometimes because even though I try to get out as much as possible, I am not a social person. It's not a shy thing or anything like that, I'm just very introverted and prefer to keep to myself. But people always feel the need to bring up "You must have no friends" or "Go outside" and it's just pathetic. Osga21
I mostly play pc games, so that is what I'm mostly familiar with. League of Legends is very famous for having a very, very toxic community. It is a somewhat different game, and because most people aren't used to such a different gameplay, they tend to be very bad at playing it. You'd think this would make the community more understanding towards newer players, but it is absolutely relentless. Everything you do will be scrutinized by your teammates and you will be mocked, whether you did good or not, there's just no escaping the cesspool that is the LoL community, in fact you'll be lucky if you play a single match without someone telling you to kill yourself or something similar. (Note: I haven't played LoL in a year, but I'm pretty sure the community is still the same) On Counter Strike Global Offensive, the community is more mature, and bullying is not as prevalent, but is still very present, especially if you are russian, polish or brazilian. As soon as someone identifies your accent from one of those specific countries they will tear you to shreds, saying "not another russian" or "f*ck off polish, hitler should've killed you". When you are playing online games, you should expect such commentaries and it is best to simply give them no answer, although sometimes it is kind of fun to poke fun at their attempts at insults. Fireman
I've never heard any hate against the Polish Osga21, you're the first one I've seen mentioning this. My top five disliked nationalities online: 1. Danish.(ER DU DASNK?!?!?!?!!?!?!?) 2. Brazilian (BR?!?!?!?!?!?!?!) 3. Russian (71878178301, stop your leet speak). 4. Dutch (Stop talking broken English through your mic and saying/typing half of your sentences in Dutch and taking over an entire server just because there are two other Dutch people in it). 5. ??? I only got four really. Polish are among my favorites, but that's mainly because of playing Soldat for a few years. Luckily I never generalize people :^) The list is purely cumulative. SarahPilko
I only got four really. Polish are among my favorites, but that's mainly because of playing Soldat for a few years I am surprised A lot of people hate Polish people, because they "speak and act like Russians". I don't hate any nationality because that is just a bit silly, there are stupid people in every country Online bullying is a serious issue and I have seen people getting upset by a simple insult, maybe because they said something that reminds them of their real life. A lot of people prefer virtual life because no one can see who they really are, they have more control of themselves and can do whatever pleases them. There are three reasons why you are playing videogames; to troll and bully people to make yourself better, play quietly and for fun, or to play for fun and make friends as you go along. I balance both lives, have friends in both lives and it is just great! From experience, sometimes virtual friends become real life friends too. I think it is easier to get hurt/upset by a post/PM on a forum, or a regular server/community you visit regularly than a random match in a video game. For instance, I play Counter Strike and I never ever pay attention to what anyone say, unless it is something nice because I will probably never play with the same people again However, if you have a server like on SA-MP or MTA you visit often and have friends, working your way up and someone became a nuisance and make your life harder there then it can be a problem. On a forum, you can simply add them to ignore list and if they harass you in public, an admin or mod will take action. On the other hand, on a server in a videogame it is hard to ignore as you can see other people talking and probaly commenting on the nuisance's comments. Even you ignore them, they can still make your life difficult by spreading rumours, I have seen it happen to a lot of people and when I was an admin on a forum, I used to receive a lot of PMs every day to assist them on how to deal with someone making their life difficult, even though a lot of them were unnecessary and a minor offence. Anonymity is the biggest reason why bullying happens on video games and online in general. Just imagine if everyone could know who you are... Half of the world would have been beaten the seven shades of sh*t out of them by now.
