Queen
I am currently taking a college course that deals with bullying. For my final project, I am to write a paper on an aspect of my choosing. I've chosen to research and write about cyber bullying, but more specifically the bullying that occurs in online games, like Grand Theft Auto, Minecraft, and Call of Duty, where millions of children roam free and are exposed to bullying. I'm particularly interested in seeing how bullying affects school performance (not necessarily academically). I thought it would be great to reach out to this community to see if anyone has ever experienced bullying while playing online firsthand. Was the bully a friend of yours from school? Was it a stranger? How did they bully you? Do you feel it tampered with your self esteem, not just in video games, but in life? Or were you the bully? Why did you do it? Did it make you feel powerful? Everything will remain anonymous in the paper. I appreciate whatever feedback you can provide. I know it won't matter much, but please keep bull sh*t remarks to yourself. As my grandma always used to say, "If you've got nothing nice to say, then keep your trap shut." Cheers. wiizardii, make total destroy, UshaB and 4 others
slohbur
You K/D sucks! Kill yourself, pu$%&y! I F#cked your mom! This is what most 12 year olds say nowadays in CoD, and I can tell from personal experience. While some people would laugh at these insults, there are always people who will take them seriously. There is a lot of "trolling" videos on youtube, where they trick kids into doing stuff, for a reward. There is a video in particular (I'm not linking it here) where a group of people trick a 10 y o into changing his Gamertag, so he could be part of a trickshoting clan. The kid wasted real life money to change his gamertag, only to find out he was just being "trolled". The kid wanted to kill himself and started crying, after he found out. Luckily, the real members of that trickshoting clan saw the "trolling" video and helped the kid: he got to play with them and was very happy. But what if there was no video to begin with? Sasuke Uzumaki
Aside from people telling me to off myself in various online games, I don't really fell as if I'm being bullied. It seems like these guys just put on a false bravado in order to feel superior online. Queen, Octane, LightningLord and 4 others
Reformed Squid
Does getting bullied on a certain online forum about a video game count? But really, a few years ago while playing RDR online some dude came into the posse I was in and started talking about me like I was notoriously a massive lowlife and everyone knew I was, as well and insulting my family and some sh*t. The crew leader (not the aforementioned guy) then kicked me from the posse and told me to f*ck off. 99% of the time this kind of stuff doesn't bother me in online video games, but for some reason the guy who was ripping on me almost sounded like he knew me or something and it was weird how everyone was jumping on his side all of the sudden and killing me. It really freaked me out somehow Edited July 13, 2015 by Cloudee Flachbau and Queen

Just about all of the threats and insults (if you can even call them that) people dish out online in video games are completely harmless, regardless of how serious they make them seem. Anybody can assume any type of identity over the Internet, so anyone can pretend to be a certain type of person by speaking/acting a certain way. I was playing an online game of Rocket League a night ago, scored two goals, and got my ear punctured by some guy on the other team who said he was an "ex-gang member" who was gonna come and rip my face off... lol. Now, would a gangster really be playing a game of 3-on-3 Rocket League late at night...? Somehow I doubt it. Anybody can pretend to be anybody over the Internet, and as Sasuke said above me, they do it in order to feel mighty while playing against others online. Trillest
I've been name called and cussed at by immature swaggots, but I don't consider it bullying. I call it being Internet tough guys, where insecure weaklings in real life try to act all badass through their mic, but end up sounding even more pathetic with laughable, childish insults and a severe lack of intelligence. I hear what you guys are saying, but the perception of an 8 year old, for example, could be very different. While I'm posting, let me pose this question. How do you think a young kid feels when he/she hears an adult insulting him/her? If they haven't been exposed to profanity, racism, prejudice behavior, etc. beforehand, I imagine it must have some effect on him/her. Testarossa
Well, some guy on XBL messaged me the other day and told me about "how Mexicans suck ass at playing GTAO." Needless to say I laughed it off and basically told him to f*ck off. He never replied. Verdant
I agree with Ray. Some of them have tried there very best to make it personal and make you loose all hope in life. Usually I just laugh, and press the ignore/report button on them (depending which game you play). They think they're victorious when really they are just making a fool of themselves. Spaghetti Cat
This is why I toggle mute. Only a small amount of time each day (if that) that I can play. Why bother with the squeakers and pseudo tough-guys jabber jawing all the time? Most times I loose anyways, and thats depressing enough without another player rubbing your face in it. Anyway, I had a friend on 360 that bullied a few people - swearing and throwing any slur that applied, telling them that they're useless and should stop playing and kill themselves etc. inviting them to a xbox live party just to do this then kicking them, the lot. He'd only do it in a party to be seen as funny, cool and edgy by his friends (that he knew irl), and yes he wasn't an adult gamer. Hopefully that's a good enough answer Queen

Queen
You can't abuse someone thru the screen. Abuse isn't just physical abuse, verbal/emotional abuse is a thing y'know, and it's just as damaging as physical abuse - no matter how you deliver the abuse. More people need to realize this. Everybody's always trivializing verbal/emotional abuse like it's nothing. Bullying online can be incredibly hurtful. Again, children (pre-teen and younger) are more susceptible to hurtful comments. Plus, there are extreme cases in which children have committed suicide. For example, there was this girl, I think she was 12, who befriended a boy online. He told her how pretty she was and how he cares about her, but suddenly he started treating her like dirt. And then suddenly he cut all communication. Well, she wasn't used to having strong feelings for another person and she was definitely new to rejection. So a few days or so later she took her own life. Sound crazy? I'm sure it does, because you and I would be able to shake it off. But this was serious to her, perhaps more serious than anyone of us could ever understand. Now here's the kicker: As it turns out, the boy was actually someone else's mother. She created a fake account so that she could teach the girl a lesson. And I'll say it again. Just think of a 7 or 8 year old who comes online for the first time because his/her parents are clueless about how Playstation Network works. All of a sudden, after years and years of isolation, they're exposed to profanity, racism, and prejudice remarks. This is all new to them! And then comes the adult gamer who calls this kid a "squeaker" and begins to torment him. I've seen it happen time and time again. Hell, I'll be honest. I've done it. But some people will take things too far and start harassing by other means, whether it be in-game messaging or here on the forums. The poor kid is now panicking that this person could find him in real life. Now he's too afraid to tell his parents because he thinks he's done something wrong. Now he can't sleep at night, and God forbid, does something he'll never be able to regret. You might say that I'm over analyzing, but there have been numerous reports of people cyber bullying to the max, and the results are disturbing. "Bullies" in online games are most likely sad, I was lucky enough when I started playing online games to have an older brother who told me to never feel bad if someone is mean to you online, because in real life their life must suck if they feel the need to pick on a little kid in a game You have a point, Sayuri. I think research suggests that most online bullies are reserved and quiet in real life. Perhaps they're even the ones getting bullied in real life and they use the internet as an outlet for their frustration of having no control in their own lives. monkb4skunk
Someone once told me to use the bitch and moan thread . I am also getting constantly corrected on my grammar. Someone also rated my car 0/10 This was on site called gtaforums it's a good site but you need a thick skin . I don't think bullying in video games is so bad per say as people are always anonymous and can move on. It is the face book bullying that gets the teenage kids these days from what I can tell. You are always going to have people swearing at you/ relationing with your mama online. What I think of these people is they probably get a hard time irl so they use online as a venting mechanism to say all the things they want to say to the bigger kid at school. Just my take on things. Then again I'm almost 30 now and don't know how teens these days react to these things online gaming was only a fraction of what it is now. Absurdity
I had a real bad experience playing Modern Warfare Call Of Freedom Duty once. My team had just finished shooting down people we thought might be terrorists because they were Arab looking and we were all shooting them in the legs and stuff because it's more fun to watch them die that way, although headshots are fun too I suppose and then my game entered a cut-scene and I had one of the women who survived me shooting people in the legs and she was on her knees when the game prompted me to "press X to cut off her big stupid Arab nose". I was about to press X to cut off her big stupid Arab nose when, and no word of a lie someone over the chat yelled " Hurry up and cut off that big stupid Arab nose you ni**er" I was really shocked at the racism at first, when they used that N word and also I was offended too because I kind of have a big nose, but the language that was used and the meanness of it really just totally ruined my in game immersion. Not that the game wasn't good, the game was good and the graphics were so good that it's almost as if you are really there killing brown people that you have no frame of reference for. But they were probably bad because they weren't very happy to see my team of heroic freedom fighters there to liberate them all to death. -- but that incident really ruined the game for me, up until then everyone was really polite and we were just talking about Pokemon and our favorite snacks to eat while watching Pokemon but the meanness and racism that the guy leveled at me just seemed so out of context. We were there enjoying the game and murdering people who deserve to be murdered and this person just took it in a completely psychopathic direction. I hope you're research goes well; for the life of me I don't understand what generates such levels abuse from people who play these fun games or why people like this guy even play them to begin with.
