Cartridge gaming.

First off, no, this isn't some backwoods part of the forums. It's not as active as the hellhole that are the V and other main GTA sections, but it has an infinitely larger amount of quality posts and posters. Don't bitch.

Anywho, cartridges are still very much alive in the Nintendo handhelds. But they will probably slowly be phased out and replaced by digital as consumers adapt to it. There are many advantages to cartridges, though; much faster reading speed, less RAM required for execution, more robust physical device than optical media, and can even improve the capacity of the platform for its benefits, meaning you could put out a simpler/cheaper platform and have each game improve the performance as it requires.

But it's also more complex and more expensive.

What you could see, would be a change in the medium. Right now you're getting USB sticks that come with a huge amount of space for ever-decreasing prices. People have been using them to boot up whole OS and games. Can't see why we couldn't move to something like that. Would be cheaper to ship, easier to carry in store etc.

Or you can also just download it.

Digital downloading is without a doubt the future. It's more environmentally friendly, much cheaper for the developer and allows quicker access to releases. Also, the most volatile parts of any console are the disk drives and the lasers.

At the moment though, the cost and capacity of SSDs is what is holding the revolution back. 1tb is not even nearly enough for the modern gamer

No revolution, just evolution (do you really want to go back to the magnetic tape and ZX Spectrums ;):) ) I have to agree the fundamental is storage as even a digital down load requires somewhere to be stored. Also there is a tiny fundamental problem with downloads and it is one that has split the stream/physical media markets. Digital is highly prone to poor connection (GTAO being proof of point). If connections were truly invulnerable the DigiMedia would be a more viable option due to the size of the software being downloaded, but many people still swear by the invulnerability physical media. It works out of the box every time and gives a greater piece of mind. Digi is cheaper though so there are a lot of pros and cons to everything. In my opinion the option of download to own is the best interim with option to burn to disk so that the software is secure so that the connection issue can be countered if you need to remove and reinstall a game. Also External HDD's are hitting 4TB at the minute and unless you are such an obsessive gamer then no more than about 4-5 games need be on the HDD at any given time (can't play more than one at a time). Games are also only in Gigs at the minute.

You can download games on the 3ds if you are certain that you will only use that system for games.

You can pop in a 64gb sd card and be on your way.

But yeah digital gaming and the cloud are the future.

as someone who collects and sells old Nes/Snes/sega games I feel like we need to clear the air we had to blow in them like hell to get them to work, but that was then now I would be all for it

Actually Id say streaming is the future. Just as you once wanted or used a physical media and now can download whatever you like, a time will come when the needless replication of data will be overcome by efficient cloud gaming.

Presently, the world of downloading is it. How can you say no to a company shoving micro transactions down your throat as you sit on the couch. So convenient. Get them $ea$on pa$$e$ bitch. Yummy pixels.

I still own every console I've ever bought, along with games spanning from PS1/N64 era to late era PS3 (I never owned any system older than that, and I haven't bought a PS4 yet). Sure, physical gaming takes up space, but that doesn't bother me. I like being able to pop in a game and play it with no wait time.

Of course, digital gaming is the future and I simply have to accept it. Games are getting bigger and more expansive all the time, and sooner or later, it will reach the point where all that data couldn't possibly fit onto a disc.

I've only downloaded one game. It was The Assignment, one of the DLC packs for The Evil Within. I loved The Evil Within. Unfortunately, I hated the Assignment and I wish I had never spent my money on it.
