85 Diplomat
I know, this probably doesn't belong in the online section, but I know it will get the most views here and I'm looking for as much input and discussion as possible as this is an interesting subject. Cartridge gaming. Lets face it, CDs/DVDs/Blu Rays have reached their limit. Take GTA V for example. You think the original game disk could hold the game plus all the massive updates we've had since Oct 2013? Nope. Battlefield 4 is another good example. You can buy premium, but those MASSIVE map packs would never fit on the disk, hence why it's a seprate download. So I'm sitting here looking at this 64GB SD card in my hand. The thing is no bigger than my finger mail, and yet it has an incredible ammount of raw storage space that blows away the old N64 cartridges from back in the day. Obviously, technology involving mass storage and gaming in general is leaps and bounds ahead of what it was 10-15 years ago. Hell, I can download GTA San Andreas and play it on my phone, something that once required a console, CD, and a TV, and those good ole fashioned red/white/yellow AV cords. Do you think we will ever see a return to cartridge gaming considering the technology is more than ready and available, and if so, why or why not? I also want to being up the fact that the gaming cartridge of yesteryear was so more physically resilient than the CDs we all know and hate (scratches ruin a $60 game) Edited July 12, 2015 by 85 Diplomat JohnDoe7125539271, Mister Pink and Vertighost
REXX
Probably not, everything will probably just be downloadable to the console/pc (when internet is eventually unlimited worldwide). But who knows!

But who knows! That certainly seems to be the way it's going. Nothing wrong with that, but perhaps companies like M$ and Sony would prefer cartridge gaming, as all the downloads and updates probably take a toll on servers, especially during the holidays. Knuckle89
Commercially, I don't think it will happen. Download games are the best way of making max £ and I think that'll be the future. I dislike it because I am a tight git and if I don't like a game I sell it as quick as possible to recoup some costs, which you can't do with download. That being said I have bought GTA on download as I knew I'd never sell it (if I did it would be worth nothing it'll be that far in the future.) em1b16a2
They will never go back to cartridges because of costs. It's cost nothing for digital downloads and cost like what a cent for disc?
MayoChiki
Disks are more like keys to the actual content nowadays.
GTA_dog
There's technically a disk inside of hard drives, so I don't see why they're becoming obsolete all of a sudden.
BarryRiley
There's technically a disk inside of hard drives, so I don't see why they're becoming obsolete all of a sudden. That's a platter. It only shares a shape with game discs. The storage is totally different.
uwotm8
Without pretending I'm an expert in data storage, remember that things like SSDs and HDDs, although similar, store data in different ways. Some storage formats don't respond well to constant writing, some constant reading, etc.
streetx1xracer
I don't believe a cartridge is good in terms of performance.
Octane
Blu-Ray has not even reached it's limit. Blu-ray discs can hold 128GB and GTA V isn't even more than 90GB on PC. Edited July 12, 2015 by IIOctaneII
CarimboHanky
i dont think cartridge gaming would ever comeback, while old school players may still prefer to have a phisical copy of a game, the new generation of gamers want stuff delivered to them. couple years down the road we would see companies focus more on digital games, the newgen consoles come with huge hdd and allow it to be upgraded for even more storage, im sure this generation would be the last to come with a cd tray. phisical gaming ends with this generation! Soran Is On
Digital downloads turn your hard drive into a cartridge. One they all turn into solid state drives this will be even more true. The future is here. Cudwieser

Cudwieser
Digital downloads turn your hard drive into a cartridge. One they all turn into solid state drives this will be even more true. The future is here. Pretty much what came to my mind. The CD/DVD/BluRay is merely the OS and Key to a game that runs from the HD (a glorified cartridge). The simplicity of a disk and reader allowed for more rapid development in terms of storage per square millimeter than carts which are still fundamentally a bulky medium. In saying that DVD/BluRay always had the fundamental flaw of having to physically hold info in the form of etching (burning) in a fashion similar to Shellac and Vinyl before. Chip storage is slightly more complex and less cost effective than disks but the potential for greater storage capacity through the ever more exotic materials and read methods is bringing carts back. JON22
You young uns will never experience that nice feeling you get when staring at your childhood gaming collection. I see mine everyday in a clear storage container next to my T.V. Nice chunky SNES cartridges, including Mario games with Super Mario World on the same cartridge Staring at games on a screen ain't the same. Meeloh
Thanks. It's been quite a number of years in the making. And I only collect what I actually want to play, so everything gets played at some point. Maintaining them is a bit of a process now that RadioShack is closed in my area. Though I guess digikey will work for caps and voltage regulators.
