GTA IV is one of the most underrated games of last decade. Along with the likes of MGS2

Lol, it's one of the most overrated games of the last decade. IMO the critics were a bit too generous giving out 10/10 like candy.

Loved the story. I also loved the diversity of the characters spread out in Liberty City. You got to work with all types of people throughout Niko's story from italian mobsters, to jamaicans, bikers, a crazy latina, irishmen etc.. It kept it interesting

Thank God the situation didn't repeat itself with V...oh, wait.

I loved the storyline, as I always liked serious stories in similar games (e.g., Getaway Black Monday, Driver Parallel Lines). It was absolute top of R* work.

I believe MGS3 had a better storyline than MGS2, and also the gameplay was better, but that's just my opinion. I just love MGS3, and it's my favourite of the series - let's wait and see if MGSV will top it.

However...

On-topic: I loved GTAIV's storyline, and I consider it the best of the series, without counting GTAV's as I never played it, so I can't say. Every single character had a very deep personality and backstory, even the ones that briefly appeared on screen, without counting those who were just mentioned. Dan Houser did a sublime job writing GTAIV's storyline, and along with RDR's, is my favourite storyline he has ever written. It made me feel sincere emotions, and I'm looking forwardto playing it again when/if I'll rebuy a PS3, although it's still the game I played most in my life.

There are things I'd change, here and there. Obviously, nothing is perfect and what I consider a flaw may be something others enjoy, so yeah. Overall, positives far outweight what little negatives there are. From beginning to end, IV is engaging, atmospheric, thoughtful and entertaining. I would say that it is "only" the second best story in the series, but the best story is, in my opinion, TLaD, which is IV too in wider context, so it wins anyway.

Perfect for what it is, a game that's that's full of unforgettable characters and an excellent protag.

(Unlike V or SA)

There's nothing i would change, maybe adding some over the top sequences but the gameplay is so fun that it suffices.

I absolutely loved the story, but it could really use a bit more involment of Ray Bulgarin.

i loved the story so much , but there's little stuffs here and there that i wish can be changed , but GTA IV has a very good story overall , even better than Mafia II story IMO.

It's a shame how the story in GTA V turned out. Too bad they focused on GTA Online more, because the story had potential. But like I said, the story in GTA IV is great, it's well written and paced.

I think GTA V is more focused on gameplay dude, because every mission on GTA V is damn unique, and GTA IV was like "go and kill that guy" missions, but it had a reason, Niko was a cold killer and he had to kill people to reach his objectives.... and ofc there's some awesome missions on GTA IV too like the Bank of Liberty heist :lol:sorry for poor english, my avatar pic explain everything....

It was definitely an improvement compared to the stories of older GTAs and clearly wasn't beaten by V's. I really liked it but probably not as much as quite a few of you do.

The story was decent, although it had some flaws, mainly Bulgarin's involvement. Still, at least it's not trainwrecked like V. So..

I liked it.

I love GTA IV story, for the most part. Niko often takes a backseat to showcase the characters throughout the game. A fine example of this is when Dimitri & Mikhail have a telling exchange - with Niko just soaking it in. He knew when to shut up. The trio in V love their own voices, maybe not so much for Franklin.

It's a compelling, fuel driven, money driven, attitude driven story, full of corrupt crime members, swindlers and shysters. It's like playing a game of a movie, with this late 80's filter vhs cassette. Epic.

The thing I wonder, will IV's story get a little degraded as time goes? Kind of like how SA's story was to many fans, as the years went, people called it more ''unrealistic''

it's fascinating.

Maybe you don't like CJ , but some characters are great , you can't compare them with the ones in V .

IMO, V has good protags (each one better than CJ) but it has no cast whatsoever, SA has an excellent cast but an awful protagonist.

The story itself was excellent. The only problem was having f*ck all to do if you didn't want to play the story.

GTA IV was the ONLY game that made me feel sick for a week because of a "right" decision taken at my first playthrough. I'm not talking I wasted my money because the game was so awful that made me sick, but I was so immersed in the story that I felt like I lost a RL cousin, it's almost perfectly written we forget we're playing a game.

Damn Man, that's deep. I had that same feeling as well when I played the Game for the first time. I also felt a huge loss when Kate was killed in the Revenge Ending as well. Niko would have considered Kate to be a Friend.

I remember the first time I chose to kill Dwayne and after talking to PBX on the phone I knew it was the wrong decision to make. It left me feeling hollow and confused like it would for Niko.

Many moments throughout the story tug at your conscience if you get it wrong. That's what makes it such a powerful experience.

MGS2 and GTA IV are both my favorite games of all time. MGS2 had a great story with a deep meaning. Kojima was bloody crazy when he wrote that one. I guess the hate for that game was Raiden being ninja'd with Snake as the protagonist for that game. I liked Raiden, but without him, we might not have a story as deep as intende. GTA IV was a brilliant game that stood the test of time, but like MGS2, it's underrated and people don't seem to see the developer's purpose for both of these games. Edited by The_Ghost

I felt so proud and excited when Gamespot announced their 10/10 list, because GTA IV was the ONLY gta game to have gotten a perfect score from them, and only 9 games have managed to reach that far in a strict and serious site like Gamespot.

The best part of it is when the gta players in the comments started to behave like an angry unruly mob bickering at each other over IV getting a perfect score while SA and V not.

It felt like the spirit of Niko came back for revenge on the IV haters for panning his game: "This is what happens when you mock my game, sh*theads!" : :D

I don't remember who it was, but someone in this thread mentioned that IV's story plays out like a TV series.

For some reason I picked up on that. I've been thinking, and it makes total sense. It's crazy, but its true... IV's story is fantastic and it really is like a TV show.

Season 1 - Broker arc

season 2 - bohan arc

season 3 - north algonquin/ bohan arc

season 4 - algonquin/dukes arc

season 5 - Alderney/climatic arc.

I think it was Midnight Hitman, but he said that exact same thing about IV narrative being a TV series in a V thread.
