I feel like guns are a little under-appreciated currently

I get all the hype surrounding the new vehicles, especially the super car class game changers T20 and Osiris. But it seems after lurking around the GTA O threads that people are mostly concerned with the balancing and speed of cars whilst guns remain stagnant and repetitive to use and nobody really bats an eye.

What I mean is, it's not new content that guns are lacking in. The PDW and marksman pistol are fine additions to each of their respective categories. Each weapon looks great in GTAV in both first and third person, thats not where my problem is, it's the stats and how each bullet-firing weapon works is where my problem lies. Just to let you know, I'm mostly referring to PvP combat when discussing the effectiveness of guns since any weapon can mow down practically any NPC with ease.

Like no automatic weapon has any distinctive spray pattern or much variation in recoil, the assault rifles practically feel the same in terms of reload times, firing rate and weapon sway (there are minor variations in damage though). SMG's suffer to a less extent since the micro SMG has a much higher fire rate than the rest of the pack, but the PDW, assault SMG and MP5 lack a large enough variation or distinct characteristic to qualify as completely different guns (PDW packs an in-built silencer though). There isn't any real reason to use pump-action shotguns over semi auto/automatic shotguns. Some pistols are actually balanced in a pretty good fashion like the .50 pistol which does monumental damage yet suffers from a smaller clip + slower fire rate (heavy pistol is still by far the most viable option as opposed to most other semi auto pistols). To put it bluntly: Most weapons are a bore to use since they feel like pretty my every other gun in the category.

I'm not saying R* need to bring in ARMYMILITARYPATRIOT#1 DLC or anything. I'd just like to see some tweaks and changes to guns in each category that will make players experiment and make an informed decision about which guns to use/avoid. Making changes to guns such as recoil patterns and reload times will make using guns a more rewarding experience once players harness each gun's power.

I'll use the example of the assault rifles as a model of what can be changed/implemented to guns.

Currently, the assault rifle category has pretty slim pickings in terms of the best rifle since they all basically act the same apart from damage. You can spray 60 bullets without barely any recoil. The advanced rifle, in my opinion is slightly better than the special carbine since it boasts a slightly better fire rate, but in reality any AR used has pretty much the same handling characteristics.

My idea is that each gun in the Assault Rifle class would wildly vary in some stats, being either mediocre in some categories but impressive with others.

Assault Rifle: Based on the AK-47, this gun could be changed from a weak starter assault rifle to a high damage beast with a large range, but with the down side of a slower rate of fire and harder to control recoil than its counterparts.

Carbine Rifle: Currently equals highest accuracy with the special carbine. With weapon tweaking the carbine rifle would retain its deadly accuracy in exchange for lower damage plus higher damage dropoff with lower range and an average rate of fire.

Advanced Rifle: Currently a strong weapon with high damage and rate of fire. It would keep these traits but recoil would be a little more difficult to control and reload times slower.

Special carbine: Would become a little more inaccurate than carbine rifle with larger weapon sway and trickier spray pattern. Will not however suffer a large damage dropoff with more range and would be little more powerful than carbine rifle.

Bullpup rifle: Rate of fire would increase to be the fastest in the category, but would have jarring recoil if not controlled and a slow reload time. Would be strong in terms of damage up close but would have a stark damage dropoff.

Anyway that's my idea for a start in tweaking guns to give variety and skill in gunplay.

TLDR; More variation in GTA gun stats and weapon handling to make guns less repetitive to use and more fun.

The pump shotgun is the best shotgun in the game against a non bulletproof helmet. It's a one shot kill in the head from SMG range. I always outgun people using the assault shotty. They only have enough time to get one shot off before they're dead.

I def agree on adding a good Battle Rifle. Id settle for a Sterling SMG and the Taurus 608 .357. My trigger finger gets itchy just looking at them.

I want a nice bolt action, or at least a semi auto battle rifle...i think the M1 Garand, or M14 would make a beautiful addition.

it'd also be cool if they added the "cut" in-game weapons back. like the rubber gun and the assault sniper... the rubber gun especially, for a more "street gangster" look

I whole heartedly support everything in this thread.

And by God, if I could blow another players head off with a Mosin Nagant M91/30, my life would be complete.

Get out of here. They already did that with DNF and took away one of the aspects that made the game so fun. Go play that.

DNF? Only thing that comes to mind is Duke Nukem: Forever, in which case how the hell would that be a substitute for GTA? It's a completely different style of game and whether or not it worked for that game means nothing when discussing the subject in regard to a completely different game.

Only being able to able to carry around a limited selection of weapons in GTA would stop this drive-by-sticky bullsh*t and you might be able to fly a vehicle without every c*nt in the lobby whipping out his homing launcher to shoot at you despite the fact that you are minding your own business. It would allow teams to coordinate their equipment and encourage teamwork and more defined roles and specialties. It would also cut down on the griefing, as someone wouldn't be able to camp with tens of thousands of rounds and over a hundred various explosives to shoot/throw at their victims.

A lot of the stupid people or ADHD-addled players who do nothing but fight in free roam all the time and never want to have to use their brains or make a decision or compromise would probably be upset over it, and since most of the playerbase seems to be one of those douchebags or retarded, I know it will never happen because Rockstar wants to cater to the lowest common denominator so that they can make money. Doesn't mean I can't wish Rockstar would make players put on their big boy pants though.

Limited loadouts would do nothing but limit the number of weapons you're assaulted by while taking away any potential variety you have. Instead of having people run around with stickies and rockets and everything, you'll just see the dedicated drive by clown with stickies and people using their assault rifle and maybe sniper like now, along with their explosives. It wouldn't do anything like you think it would.

Also limiting ammo and stuff would do nothing but slow down the game and change it from what it has been designed to be. It's not meant to be a slow paced and strategic game, it's basically a mimicking of action movies with a heaping pile of parody and satire of culture. As long as you have free mode where people can basically do what they want all you're looking at doing is changing how they go about it, you're not going to remove it or really mitigate it at all.

I don't play gta to be limited to a weapon on my back and a sidearm. Or two weapons. Or four. Or whatever. Hell, the jokes about pulling weapons out of your ass say it's meant to be like that and not be taken seriously (a problem most people seem to fall into). They did it with DNF where instead of carrying every weapon you could only carry two...then four... and it really detracts from the experience. The only way it works is if the game is designed from the ground up with the concept in mind otherwise it feels sh*t and just haphazardly thrown in in some lame attempt to change it.

Revenge of the Donut

I'd like to see a burst rifle or semi-automatic rifle, I'd also like a double barrel shotgun that fires both shells at the same time, creating a very wide firing area at the cost of having to reload after every shot.

In free roam limiting ammo capacity and the amount of guns that a player can carry would most likely be a rushed concept with most players angered and confused at the change. Although, it might be plausible if R* maybe create gun lockers in each ammu-nation and their apartment, where players can access it at any time but to hold more guns at an ammu-nation would have a higher daily fee cost. Apartment + garages have unlimited weapon storage. That's an idea but it's pretty sketchy?

But in Deathmatches + other gamemodes involving weapons a limited carrying capacity is NEEDED. I'm sick of playing DM's with owned + pickups to be repeatedly mowed down by launchers, bombs and miniguns, wiping any chance of a tactical battle with the other team. forced + pickups is pretty terrible as well when you're locked to only the weapon you're given. No gun variety and no fun.

My idea is that there is another option for hosts called 'loadout/loadout + pickups' where players choose a primary weapon (shotty, sniper, Assault Rifles, SMG's, MG's) which would have limited ammo. Then you would have a choice of pistol/launcher as a secondary and a choice of tear gas/grenade/stickbomb/jerrycan (didn't forget about you bud. Whoever is reading this is thinking: STEALING FROM COD, HUH?

Well, here's my little spin on the loadout idea. There would be a speed/armour points system whereby heavier weapons would decrease speed and stronger weapons would decrease the amount of available armour. So everybody would choose their available weapons at a selection screen and start with 100* armour and 100* speed.

Each weapon you place in your arsenal will decrease both your speed and armour amount.

-So, if you were to use a Combat MG over the normal MG, they would both decrease speed by 20 points*, but since the Combat MG is stronger it would strip 25* armour points away whereas the normal MG would only strip 20* armour points.

-Another example is the pistols: Using the standard pistol would only strip 5* armour points away whereas the heavy pistol would strip 15* away, plus since the heavy pistol is heavier than the standard pistol it would strip more speed points off the player as opposed to using the normal pistol.

-Same thing every other category: Auto shottys strip more armour points than pump-action shottys, Advanced Rifle might be light and nimble but strips way more armour points than the standard AK assault rifle, in SMG's the Micro-Smg is the weakest but is light so it will take away the least amount of speed points and armour points since it's the weakest. Same with snipers, heavy sniper takes more speed than normal sniper and a bit more armour, the marksman will also take more armour than the standard sniper rifle due to its spammmm capabilities.

Everybody receives the same amount of armour/speed and a system will be implemented where armour and speed are balanced and not too weak or stronk for players.

FInally, accessories for the player such as helmets, weapon accessories such as grips and suppressors and extra speed or armour can be obtained by sacraficing speed/armour. Helmets would cost 30 speed* or 20 armour*, grip would be 10 speed* or 15 armour* etc.

Am I just on the verge of insanity or does anybody else understand this idea?

*Means that the numbers aren't definative and I'm just using my own assumption based numbers. Don't grill me about that it's unbalanced or wrong.

I´m kind of disappointed that almost all the guns in GTA 5 look too tactical (it´s weird to see a gangbanger or an outlaw biker with a modern looking full metal AK or a pump action shotgun with folding stock and pistol grip).I would like some more classic looking guns, like these:

It started with the ballad of gay tony....i'm surprised more people didn't see the direction they were leaning.

They implemented forced+pickups for a reason. If you want tactical and strategic then you're better off playing a game better suited to it and actually conducive to it as opposed to a game where 90% of the community thinks hurr durr blow everything up. Like, I don't know, Rainbow Six or even The Division and others.

I'm not too picky about guns usually, I would like some more classic guns, the only one that I really, really want in game though is the .44 Magnum (though any revolvers at all would be cool):

I agree a half decent revolver would be great and long over due. I would also like a one handed sawn off shotgun.

either a T2 style one with Arnie's re-cock animation (Anyone familiar with the movie will know)
