I feel like guns are a little under-appreciated currently

I get all the hype surrounding the new vehicles, especially the super car class game changers T20 and Osiris. But it seems after lurking around the GTA O threads that people are mostly concerned with the balancing and speed of cars whilst guns remain stagnant and repetitive to use and nobody really bats an eye.

What I mean is, it's not new content that guns are lacking in. The PDW and marksman pistol are fine additions to each of their respective categories. Each weapon looks great in GTAV in both first and third person, thats not where my problem is, it's the stats and how each bullet-firing weapon works is where my problem lies. Just to let you know, I'm mostly referring to PvP combat when discussing the effectiveness of guns since any weapon can mow down practically any NPC with ease.

Like no automatic weapon has any distinctive spray pattern or much variation in recoil, the assault rifles practically feel the same in terms of reload times, firing rate and weapon sway (there are minor variations in damage though). SMG's suffer to a less extent since the micro SMG has a much higher fire rate than the rest of the pack, but the PDW, assault SMG and MP5 lack a large enough variation or distinct characteristic to qualify as completely different guns (PDW packs an in-built silencer though). There isn't any real reason to use pump-action shotguns over semi auto/automatic shotguns. Some pistols are actually balanced in a pretty good fashion like the .50 pistol which does monumental damage yet suffers from a smaller clip + slower fire rate (heavy pistol is still by far the most viable option as opposed to most other semi auto pistols). To put it bluntly: Most weapons are a bore to use since they feel like pretty my every other gun in the category.

I'm not saying R* need to bring in ARMYMILITARYPATRIOT#1 DLC or anything. I'd just like to see some tweaks and changes to guns in each category that will make players experiment and make an informed decision about which guns to use/avoid. Making changes to guns such as recoil patterns and reload times will make using guns a more rewarding experience once players harness each gun's power.

I'll use the example of the assault rifles as a model of what can be changed/implemented to guns.

Currently, the assault rifle category has pretty slim pickings in terms of the best rifle since they all basically act the same apart from damage. You can spray 60 bullets without barely any recoil. The advanced rifle, in my opinion is slightly better than the special carbine since it boasts a slightly better fire rate, but in reality any AR used has pretty much the same handling characteristics.

My idea is that each gun in the Assault Rifle class would wildly vary in some stats, being either mediocre in some categories but impressive with others.

Assault Rifle: Based on the AK-47, this gun could be changed from a weak starter assault rifle to a high damage beast with a large range, but with the down side of a slower rate of fire and harder to control recoil than its counterparts.

Carbine Rifle: Currently equals highest accuracy with the special carbine. With weapon tweaking the carbine rifle would retain its deadly accuracy in exchange for lower damage plus higher damage dropoff with lower range and an average rate of fire.

Advanced Rifle: Currently a strong weapon with high damage and rate of fire. It would keep these traits but recoil would be a little more difficult to control and reload times slower.

Special carbine: Would become a little more inaccurate than carbine rifle with larger weapon sway and trickier spray pattern. Will not however suffer a large damage dropoff with more range and would be little more powerful than carbine rifle.

Bullpup rifle: Rate of fire would increase to be the fastest in the category, but would have jarring recoil if not controlled and a slow reload time. Would be strong in terms of damage up close but would have a stark damage dropoff.

Anyway that's my idea for a start in tweaking guns to give variety and skill in gunplay.

TLDR; More variation in GTA gun stats and weapon handling to make guns less repetitive to use and more fun.

I want a nice bolt action, or at least a semi auto battle rifle...i think the M1 Garand, or M14 would make a beautiful addition.

I must say a bolt action 5 shot carbine, 6 shot rrvolver and a 3 shot sniper rifle firinh explosive rounds coud be fun, but they shoud be rank locked beyond rank 150 and have some usefullness

WW2 guns please, rifles and machine guns. They should be level locked and quite expensive as a reward for your time investment.

Nice post OP, I agree.

Guns feel kind of meh imo. Cars and everything else feel great though. I think a lot of it is the guns just feel off. They fire in cones rather than having a predictable or even simulated recoil system and the sounds are a bit pathetic. Not to mention no matter what they add as far as guns go, you typically are only going to use the top few of them and the rest are just for fun.

The bullpup already has silly recoil and is often barely faster than the special carbine if at all at range, easily the best close up, tied with the advanced basically because of that gun's damage keeping it up there with the bullpup at close range.

The carbine and ak are kinda poop though.

I think more realistically represented recoil would go a long way and if they got rid of just the cone of magical inaccuracy as well as making the sounds better, the guns need more oomph and would be a lot more fun. The sounds are a bit different between them but they have a lack of depth of character to the guns.

Frankly, I'm too used to BF3's gun audio and has a hard time coping with anything worse (BF4 included), and GTAV's gun audio doesn't even compare to most contemporary shooters.

They're just tools to me, nothing to appreciate there.

The PVP gunplay is pretty sh*t in GTA Online. Battles tend to be two morons doing somersaults while firing at each other but since the guns in this game have no range they aren't even hitting each other.

Any CoD2 (the best game in the series) veterans here? If not the Kar98k (above) is one of the best feeling weapons in video games. A German bolt-action rifle that took timing and skill to use. You can also have a scoped version which would be a perfect mod in GTA. The American Springfield would also be a runner up along with the M1 Garand.

the DEagle needs more punch to it and there needs to be a .44 or.500 Magnum in the game... Also wish there were katanas, but that's melee, so we'll put that aside

I wish they had just ported the Max Payne 3 gunplay mechanics straight into the game, minus the diving and bullet-time stuff and easy zig-zagging, but including the weapon carrying system.

One of the things that bugs me the most about the guns in GTA is that there is no reason to use a pistol unless you are just roleplaying or doing challenge runs or deathmatch maps that are locked to pistols. I think part of the problem with them is that they aren't properly semi-automatic, which is one thing that Max Payne 3 got very right.

Also having more limited carrying ability would introduce new way to balance the weapons with their clip size and reserve ammo, and encourage the use of a variety of weapons, as well as cutting down on the amount of RPG/sticky/minigun/grenade spamming that takes place.

Get out of here. They already did that with DNF and took away one of the aspects that made the game so fun. Go play that.

Not as many people are fans of guns in real life. It's hard to be so enthusiastic about something most people don't use often, and you can't see them in much detail in this game. But as for me, I buy guns I like, like the heavy pistol, and I buy the skins for them too.

I really like that they made the modern assault rifles better than the old AK and M16 that still dominate every shooter game for no good reason. I don't think they should buff these dinosaurs at all. They are being phased out already especially the AK. Bullpups should simply win in stats: comfort, barrel length, weight balance, better build quality, and more. Difference in upgradability would be nice though. But I would really love if they had a Garand or even older rifle (revolver rifle or pistol?). A musket slash marksman pistol for every slot!

Spray pattern is a cool game mechanic that defines Counter-Strike, but there's no reason to put it in other games. Recoil doesn't end or loop. If you want a game to control recoil it should go up as long as you fire.

The shotguns are very different... at the shooting range. I agree all the guns except pistols and musket have far too little range.

I wish the semi-automatic pistols would shoot much faster so I can use something other than the AP. I use it like a semi-automatic but the others are just unrealistically slow.

We also need a bigger SAM to take down jet fighters.

For me I think it's because guns are tools and not much else. So long as my advanced rifle keeps working the way I've come to expect, there's not much for me to be excited or complain about. As far as weapons in general though, I'm super glad the brass knuckles have come back, and would love to see more fun stuff like the katana and chainsaw.

Well... I take that back - I'd be super excited about a revolver of some sort as well.

For modern weapons I'd like to see the AK-74 instead of the usual AK-47 or Chinese analogues. There should be a difference to assault rifles and carbines like carbines should have a shorter range and less accuracy compared to rifles. Make the AK-74 similar to the M16 because of the 5.45x39mm rounds which had a high muzzle velocity like 5.56x45mm. Too much tacticool weapons in GTA V and I'd rather see the AK-47 like it was in IV and Max Payne 3.

I think it all comes down to weapon balance and the fact that players have huge amount of health so some weapons are great against NPC's (like the new Marksman Pistol) but bad on PVP, on the other end you have the Marksman rifle which is great on PVP but pointless on dealing with NPC's since they fall after 1 shot making it dificult to get fast kills.

I would like some weapon balance too and the AK47 damage buff seems to be a good idea but right now AR's are not issue, the SMG's and pistols (except the AP and Marksman pistol) need a serious damage buff to be useful. Pistols should get their damage doubled so they get a decent TTK, and SMG's should get 50% more damage (same damage as AR's) or higher rate of fire.

I´m kind of disappointed that almost all the guns in GTA 5 look too tactical (it´s weird to see a gangbanger or an outlaw biker with a modern looking full metal AK or a pump action shotgun with folding stock and pistol grip).I would like some more classic looking guns, like these:

To those asking for WWII + gangbanger guns and accessories: I'd love to see that kind of content released in GTAO

As a former COD united offensive player (back when modded servers were a thing) I absolutely love the weight and feel of older, archaic styled bolt action/semi automatic rifles which make memorable metal clinks every time the gun is cocked/reloaded. The days I spent hunting fools with my lee-enfield or gewehr 43 were just magic. GTAO is sorely missing some good old fashion revolvers or bolt action rifles from players' weapon selection.

If the musket was added then why not old school bolt action rifles and SMGs but pls don't make them tacticool. No modern optics just historical accessories like bayonets, drum magazine(for PPSh) and sniper scope for both mosin and SVT.
