Ivan Steelman Reviews the Coil Brawler

Hey, Ivan Steelman here, 10 time Off Road Champion and designer of San Andrea's premier Ivan Steelman's OFF ROAD Series.

http://socialclub.rockstargames.com/games/gtav/playlists/playlist/cNpiBr-WA0KQWUI-T0dFXw

Everyone knows you're not a TRUE Off Road racer unless you can win MY playlist. As the creator of the series, many racers come to me for my advice on the best vehicle to win the Championship. A new off road vehicle was introduced to me today, the Coil Brawler, and I was asked to offer my opinion as to if it could dethrone my trusty Karin Rebel for the series championship.

0_0.jpg

The short answer, Stick with the Rebel

0_0.jpg

The Brawler brings added acceleration to the track, but this advantage is over shadowed by its other shortcomings going head to head vs the Rebel in a multilap race in the series. In a playlist that demands precision driving, the Brawler's shortcomings force you to have twice the precision of a Rebel driver. Meaning you may beat the Rebel 1 lap, but are likely to make too many mistakes 3 out of 5 laps vs the Rebel.

Traction:

The Brawler has better grip when all 4 tires are on the ground. Sliding around the grassy areas of the series, the Brawler wins and is less likely to spin out than the Rebel. But all four tires are rarely on the ground in this series, and the Brawler is slightly more roll over prone than the Rebel once its perfect 4 wheel stance is broken.

Suspension:

With both using the highest stock suspension (basically required if you dont want to SINK in this series, and want good lift off the ramps), the Rebel is the clear winner in this category. The series was designed for the Rebel, with its superior suspension settings that provide great bounce lift off the ramps at medium and high speed. The series features many areas where theres not much runway to get up to speed for a ramp jump, and the Rebel takes a medium amount of speed and gives you great lift and distance over water and whatever else you are jumping. Time spent in the water slows you down, and the truck that clears more water distance has the advantage. The Brawler can get more distance if it gets a big runway to do so. The in-air characteristics of the Brawler make it more squirrely to control in the air as well. The biggest thing Brawler drivers will notice is that while the Brawler claims to have great coil suspension, its still inferior to the Rebel's. You'll notice this when you hit even the smallest rocks or objects, the Brawler hits them much more roughly, severely upsetting the car sometimes, whereas the Rebel takes small rocks and objects much smoother. In the series finale river rock section, the Brawler will get toasted by the Rebel, because even the Rebel will stall out and flood the engine if you so much as stop in the rushing river. Going over small rocky sections will give Brawler drivers severe migraines by the end of the series.

Brakes:

The Brawler claims to have a full bar over the Rebel in the brakes category, but in practice the Brawler's brakes feel worse. Especially when you got a lead foot over a long straight section and then try to brake to turn the car, or after coming off a high speed jump and you got too much air, and now have to lock it down to get the Brawler under control and turned in a new direction. Theres a few areas of the series you'll blow by the Rebel on a straight, take a jump, and then notice the landing, braking, and redirection is much tougher, and the Rebel comes down after you, regains control quicker, and takes off without you in a new direction, thus negating the better acceleration of the Brawler. You'll notice many times you'll need to reign in the gas before long jumps, as getting too much air is a bad thing.

Acceleration:

While the series was designed to sink and infuriate dirt bikes when going up against the Rebel or other capable off road vehicles, it appears the Brawlers better acceleration in this series will cause more frustration than happiness as well. Too often a Brawler driver will want to drive the car flat out to show off (or catch up) and find themselves in more trouble when they come off a big jump or approach a tight section.

In the end, I'll take my trusty Rebel and beat the Brawler in a 3+ lap run of every course in this series. (Track 6 is locked to a stock Rebel because there were no sections to sink a bike)

A fully loaded Brawler was used in my test runs. I regret buying it, but had to know if it could beat my Rebel overall when I host my playlist.

Can't say I'm surprised. You said the race series is designed around the Rebel and you've been driving the Rebel for almost 2 years as compared to the Brawlers 2 days. I wasn't too impressed with the Brawler when I tried it last night either but this test is kind of biased.

Not being a dick. You missed the humor and shameless plug of that statement. Im pretending the series is more popular than it is, in hopes that it will become more popular than it is. And its a great series for off roaders who want a great mix style of tracks (and loved the old arcade game), not those crazy climb every mountain type tracks everyone assumes off roading is about.

Hey, Barack Obama here.

Who's Ivan Steelman?

You know how this game makes up fake names and mimics reality? Back when I thought Rockstar would Verify GOOD tracks, I thought they'd Verify it if I went with the fake theme of the game. I knew I couldnt call it Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's OFF ROAD if I wanted to get verified, so I made up a similar style name as the fake host of the fake series. Ironman....Steelman....get it?

I've had no issues with my Brawler and would take that over the Rebel any day. Wait until they fix the Brawler and give it 4 wheel drive, as it is currently RWD by mistake (read the vehicles website description, states its a 4x4).

Don't listen to them Steelman. I have your playlist. It's awesome! Anybody that wants to off road without the Sanchez involved will love his playlist.

I use a shortened 4 race playlist of the 8 you made all the time cause 8 causes not many to join. It'd be great if you had more for PS3

Im the PERFECT guy to test the Brawler with a great set of tracks to try it on. I know the courses like the back of my hand, and know how to push the Rebel to WINS vs all comers every time I host, I know exactly how to test the Brawler and see if it has what it takes to beat Rebel in MY hands. The tracks are challenging every time, even for me, I cant phone in a race, as I CAN be beat on my own tracks if I screw up too much. So I could instantly tell the difference in feel of the Brawler, pushed it hard as if I was racing myself, and saw where it came up short. The series is an Expert level set of off road tracks, I drink the tears of wannabes every time I host those tracks. But they arent so hard, that a first timer couldnt come in and beat me. I have been beat by first timers because I goofed up too many times too many sections and went too easy on them first start of the race.

This is a dumb write up, for realz. Which vehicle will get you from sandy shores to the top of mt. Chiliad first? That's what matters when you're talking about the brawler. Not some trumped up course designed around the sanchez' weaknesses.

4WD will just make it less likely to spin out, It already does that well and beats the Rebel in the grassy sections of the first 2 tracks. I cant drive the Rebel flat out in the grass and trying to turn at the same time. I cant see making it true 4WD giving it better handling in those sections than it already has.

The only prayer this vehicle had is IN tracks of my style. It clearly isnt going to out rock climb the big players in that category.

The brawler allows for 100x the mistakes as any other offroad vehicle on the same general route. Ie. Get to sandy shores from the city as fast as possible.

So for your playlist stick with the rebel..

But can the rebel go all the way like a sandking can?

So you see everything has a weak spot..

I like the brawler. Offroading is all about the sport.. Not racing

I don't get it. You said you created a playlist for the rebel. Then you try to use a different vehicle and say it's bad.

But I do agree, the brakes are bad. Also I was going to play the playlist until I saw that track 6 is locked to one vehicle- kinda ruins the "pushing your vehicle to the limit" saying.
