Automotive Snap Tips

I have had many people inquire about my photography in game. In this thread I thought I would share some of my tips and process of how I take a picture. I am not a real photographer, I don't know the real terms or have any formal education on the subject. It is just something people say I am good at, so I thought I would share. I do not do any post editing on a PC.

There are several factors that make a vehicle snap interesting, angle at which the shot was taken, lighting, reflections on the car, time of day, and filters.

Here is an example of a somewhat boring shot: yQVJWVUpYkmH6V3sCoGd8Q_0_0.jpg

Nothing wrong with it, but nothing special either. It is noon time, so the sun is almost directly above, this limits the amount of reflections. Also the pic is too far away. The closer you get, the better the car looks.

So let's try again, this time, a lower angle, with a filter: N-L6mVtZ8UGAQ7OSjJlhyg_0_0.jpg

The car is in the exact same spot. I have moved my character roughly 30 meters down the hill. From there I zoom onto the car, with the car slightly off to one side of the shot. Tap L1 for depth of field effect. Almost there. Now we choose a filter that makes the car stand out, and subdues the background. Also, thr sun has moved slightly to the West, making the passenger side of the car produce better reflections.

Now where do we go from here? How about turning the wheels so we can see the front rim better:

Here is a video on how I keep the wheels turned.

Well, got the wheels turned, but now the sun has moved. Now the passenger side of the car is way too dark. Still an ok picture, but even changing the filter doesn't really make the car pop like it did. The sun is on the driver side now.

Ok, final shot. Good lighting, dramatic position, good reflections, good filter: cCDQ1QkfXUCemno9hFUctg_0_0.jpg

I moved to the top of the hill so I can capture the front wheels. I have chosen a filter that really makes the pearl in the paint stand out. The angle of the sun makes for some nice reflections on the hood and down the side of the car. This is the snap I would probably keep.

Questions? Comments? What tips do you have?

I hope this helps at least one person, thanks for reading. Happy snapping.

Great tips. I'd love to do stuff like that but the time I get to play is rare. So I do what I do and leave it to guys like you to take these so I can look. Thanks.

Oh and do you turn the wheels and they stay?

Nice tips, but how do you have the wheels turned if your not in it anymore? Is that a PC thing or something?

EDIT: Nvm, a video link was added. :)

Oh and do you turn the wheels and they stay?

You just have to youtube that little trick. They don't stay by themselves so you have to block off both doors, turn the wheels, and exit the vehicle. This teleports you out and leaves the vehicle running, lights on if its night time, and wheels still turned.

It sounds complicated but I promise it is easier done than said.

Edited the OP with a video of how it is done.

Those are really great shots. I would have moved the camera on the first one a hair to the left so that sliver of color doesn't show. Second and third are great. Last one has too many focus points (the car, bush, and graffiti) what I would do is park the car a little bit in front of the bush. I think. Still really great snap though. Well done.

Thank you! Is there any way to get low angle shots on console?

Yes. The tried and true way of standing below the car, like in my little tutorial. The sticky bomb glitch also still works, but it is really hit or miss. It doesn't work 80% of the time.

Sticky bomb glitch:

^Only works sometimes.

U can also take a pic while in a car, and the lower the car the better. Like a manana or summin just make sure the windows are down otherwise it's tinted lol

Ah yes. The best car for this is the topless Kalahari. I don't use this method as it uses up a garage slot. It can however provide some very very nice angles. Lowering the car or even parking it halfway on a rock or something.

This gallery uses the Kalahari method quite often. Just an example of what you can accomplish if you really put some thought into your shots.

Made this one using that method. Quite surprised how it went! First I was standing there in the night like what am I doing here, then the sun came up creating a nice shadow from the tree.

Thanks for the tip man!

Made these with that method as well though on the ledge behind Simeon.

Amazing shots. Great work. Yeah the ledge behind Simeon's is a great spot. One day I would like to make a map with some of the good shots for low angles.

yeah! I used a stanier for my shots of the futo, just find a civilian car and break the door off, it works well
