What's better, GTA IV or GTA:SA?

Recommended Posts

Both are masterpieces in my opinion, but I tend more to the style of GTA IV. The gritty tone, setting and story, along with its characters, including the protagonist and antagonist. And then there're the grounded missions, criminal side-missions, soundtrack, and well, everything about the core gameplay.

GTA IV is more to my liking. I prefer the more cohesive and authentic feeling of GTA IV that was achieved by restarting with the HD universe and leaving out excess features accumulated during the 3D universe. SA is my favorite game in the 3D universe but I have always appreciated Rockstar's vision with GTA IV.

i think it’s not fair to say a game is totally better than the other one. gta san andreas is outdated compared to gta 4. gta 4 has a more detailed story and characters while san andreas has more fun in mission and has more in the world generally. i’d give both a 9/10. it also depends on which one you played before with nostalgia feeling.i have the nostalgia feeling on gta san andreas but for example atmosphere of it isn’t my type that much compared to gta4.

I honestly was surprised by how civilized this thread was, no San Andreas bashing. 2015 were different times, people were still disappointed with GTA V.

It's still true though. GTA IV is the king and SA is the queen. I'm not sure what GTA V is. Probably one of the peasants begging for a loaf of bread.;)

There's a more detailed hierarchy out there 😜:

For me, IV is King, VCS is Queen, SA is Prince, LCS is Princess, and way down the List, V is the Village Leper. ;)

Vice City :D

To be more serious, San Andreas is probably a pinnacle of 3D era GTAs.

GTA IV is a new beginning, a bit contested, yet still great in its own right.

I vote for SA.

i also think gta 4 changed the series’ type in a perfect way, i don’t look into what it’s missing that much compared to gta sa, and i think instead of complaining what gta 4 is missing we can go back to gta sa or tbogt :)

Not really. I was swept up on the GTA V bashing bandwagon back then and it made me says some things I didn't really believe in necessarily. Funny thing is I would consider GTA V more applicable of that now over San Andreas. The older San Andreas gets the worse it becomes.

Regardless if there's one thing that hasn't changed is GTA IV is still the king on the GTA throne.😉

IV has definitely aged better to me than SA. SA really does not hold up well for me and I don't find it as fun or immersive to play as IV - particularly when it comes to combat gameplay. IV has a cover system, SA doesn't, and that's more than made or broken games for me in the past. SA just... isn't fun to play. Strangely, I found Vice City less clunky.

Not to mention, IV had more memorable characters. I can only name a handful from SA, but I can remember almost everybody from IV. It also helped that IV had a much tighter narrative where every character "mattered" in the overall scheme of things. Plus, I really hated CJ as a character. He whines for pretty much all of SA's story, and it gets so old. I really do not understand why CJ is so lauded.

Damn man, I cannot resist but to make you an offer and send you the proper version of SA to try it out. I can upload it on my Google drive and send you, if you want. It is a modded PC version indeed, but nothing that's not sort of 'official' isn't being used. Bunch of beta and removed stuff, necessary fixes or visual features from other platforms - PS2. No nonsense with draw distance, FPS, resolution or 'ultra HD' bs. Simply the way it was supposed to be in the first place.

Honestly, just like with GTA IV and even to a greater extent, Rockstar did no justice to SA on any other platform besides the original one. PC has it's perks though, better resolution and some other details, or MS/KB combo. Other than that, PC version is pretty weak. Taking only the best from both worlds tend to significantly improve the gameplay.

It's not my intention to ' open your eyes ', but simply to make a better point why SA is actually more than a good game and far from lame, when shining at its brightest.

No need to bother with the story if you don't like it, just cruise around and do regular GTA stuff. For the convenience, I added a car spawner.

I don't want to bother, but PM me for any details. Cheers!

Couldn't agree more. People can say what they like about GTA IV's cover system which isn't that bad and functions (lol it's not "broken"), but I would still take that than nothing at all. Plus GTA IV's shooting mechanics kerb stomps San Andreas'. When San Andreas was the same age GTA IV currently is it didn't feel anywhere near as good to play.

There are some good characters in San Andreas like Toreno, The Truth, Woozie, Sweet, Pulaski, Cesar etc, but as good as they are they still pale in comparison to the majority of characters in GTA IV IMO. And I don't get why CJ is lauded either. I guess people like shallow and uninteresting avatars who whine alot that you can customise.

Somehow the whole setting of SA appealed to me more than IV. And even though the map in IV was larger, SA somehow seemed larger. I'd put SA over IV

SA is geographically larger actually, but LC in IV is denser, more detailed, has more unique interiors and has more verticality with features such as window cleaning platforms.

I still personally prefer IV over SA, but I don't agree with the belief that SA has gotten "worse" with age, it is still the exact same game with the exact same gameplay mechanics made with the PS2 platform in mind. But it doesn't matter what others think, what matters is that I still find both games fun to play.

Funnily enough it's GTA IV's map that feels larger for those reasons even though technically it's not.

with comparing to san andreas or without, i never felt like gta 4’s map was small or not big enough. it just looks great to me the way it is

It's apples and oranges imo. A large map that really feels huge and diverse is cool and works for SA, and a densely packed and highly detailed city map is cool and works for IV. It's just two different kinds of map to suit two different games.

That's what I think too, I can't really choose. It's like if I tried to pick whether my favorite movie is Star Wars or The Godfather, I love them both for different reasons and they fulfill different things.

The map in San Andreas is honestly the only thing I could say I like about it since the rest of the game is a mixed bag. I agree though both approaches work for the respective goals and ambitions for each game.
