GTA SA - Funny and somewhat crazy missions, such as getting into Area 69 and stealing a jetpack, infiltration of a navy ship that had only 6 soldiers guarding it. Ability to fly planes and helicopters. Bicycles. Big map to explore. Graphics quality not that great. Story focused on the whole gang warfare type of deal.

GTA IV - Serious and somewhat realistic missions, not much craziness, except for the ridiculous missions in TBOGT that have you stealing an APC or a gold Buzzard off the back of a ship. Parachuting and base jumping. Able to fly helicopters, no jetpacks or planes. Map was smaller but still interesting to explore. Graphics are phenomenonal. Story focused on three different protags, one being a Balkan off a ship to begin a new life, one about a biker with the Lost and the last about Luis and the night club scene.

Overall both rate high in my book. The minuses about GTA SA are the graphics aren't all the great but then again we are dealing with something made in 2004 right? So based on that, SA still awesome to play with a miriad of things to do to keep entertained even after the story is complete. Driving feels like it's on rails.

IV you have fantastic graphics and the environment sucks you in with the realism. The minuses, well there's no Transfender, no underwater swimming, no jetpacks ot flying planes, but who really needs this when the map is smaller and it's not really necessary to have Transfender. The way it works when you have a nice car, suddenly most cars parked on the side of the road are what you have so it's just a matter of choice finding the car you prefer. Driving feels much more realistic and slidey more.

After the story is complete, there's still much to do from shooting pigeons/seagulls, stunt jumps or all the LC most wanted list. Even Stevie's cars list and Little Jacob's job run.

Both SA and IV have their own things that I love and those I dislike but in the end I choose IV because the story to me is much more interesting and the gameplay is fantastic. I have love for IV it grows on you over time but I still love SA, even though I can deal without having a jetpack in IV.

I prefer the HD Universe as well but the wide variety of map and vehicles is amazing.

Ah, I see we have another game VS. game thread. Well, they are both great in their own ways. Each game made me feel different and look at the GTA series in a different light. GTA: San Andreas for example showed me just how outrageous the games could be while maintaining a state of realism, while GTA IV showed me just how close to reality the games could come without losing the fun aspect. Of course, GTA IV is better from many standpoints but there are still many people who prefer GTASA so it's all very subjective. One thing that I feel cannot be debated, is that GTA IV had a much better story, more believable and better written characters, and really made the GTA series top dog. It is definitely the game I prefer, and although many folks say it has little to no replay value, and that it is boring because of it's ultra realism, I completely disagree.

GTA SA is the best, despite the fact that I personally prefer playing IV/TLAD.

Pretty much this. I look at SA more fondly than I used to since GTA V isn't all that it's cracked up to be, but I still find GTA IV to be a better game than SA just like I did when it was being ripped to shreds from SA fanboys in 2008.

However in saying that I understand perfectly why SA is so adored, but GTA IV is my type of game. I love that it's darker and grittier and I love that it's more down to earth as well. Overall they're both great games, but GTA IV has provided me with a lot more entertainment value if I'm being honest.

Honestly, IV in my mind was and is R*'s magnum opus and maybe even the best game I've ever played.

But that's just me. My opinion.

I like SA a bit more than IV, Since for me, Gameplay is more important than story and SA nailed the gameplay.
Tho, If we had a mixture of SA's Gameplay and IV's Story, We would have the ultimate GTA, imo.

This topic used to be HOT back during IV release and was the battleground in a struggle to secure the place of the best GTA in the series with countless fans on both sides serving their fanboyism.

Usually, SA wins as a complete entertainer with qualities that would satisfy every kind of gamer with superior freedom, amazing map, and fun content.

IV wins for the engaging story, realistic gameplay, atmosphere, and overall for being different from the rest of the crowd.

Basically, both games can't be compared as they are a LOT different with very few similarities in them, and that actually works in favor of both games.

Unlike GTA V which kind of worked as a peace treaty between both sides of the fans in ending the years long GTA War with a clear, unanimous decision to consider GTA V as; the most disappointing, the biggest failure, and worst single player title in the series, so far.

IV, although the glorious days of playing some good ol' San Andreas are over 10 years now. I can say I prefer IV to SA.

Isn't it amazing how GTA IV and SA fans have been brought together (mostly), by our mutual disappointment with GTA V? 7 years ago I didn't think that was possible if I'm being honest.:p

IV in term of storyline and details. SA in term of gameplay and features.

Mind you, SA's vehicles content are still more balanced than V. :p

I guess GTA V was the Straw that Broke the Camels Back, and provided the mutual kinship between SA, and IV?

I can't compare them. Is not like V or IV which use similar engines. IV is far more realistic, but SA was one of the most entertaining games I've ever played. What I can say is, SA was for me the best game of the 3D universe, and IV the best of HD.

SA was a blast in 2004/5, but IV simply changed everything, so it's IV for me.

San Andreas, by far. When I first played GTA IV I was so disappointed and mostly everything I wanted just couldn't be done. With San Andreas, I didn't have that issue.

PC version is ugly and buggy.

Yeah... Saying something doesn't make it true. It's not like most San Andreas fans prefer GTA IV over GTA V. Just speaking from my gamer and social networking experiences.

When i think of IV, i think of the best gameplay and story in the series. When i think of SA, i think of the best map and jobs in the series. Both have my favorite soundtracks in the series. I still prefer IV, though.

Even though I enjoy both games, I gotta go with San Andreas. I played that game a lot, and it's really fun. There's so many things you can do in that game, like body customizing, cheat codes, flying a jetpack, buying properties, recruiting homies, and more. GTA IV is still a good game, don't get me wrong. Both games are unique in their own way.

Considering I like the 3D Era more due to what I can obtain and present myself with a greater challenge, I will say SA.

But if you remove my main interests in GTA, then I would say IV. It all depends on taste, really. There is no "this one's better." I like both more or less the same. But comparing 3D to HD doesn't really sit well with me. There is always this gap between the fans of 3D and HD, well, I like all of the above except V for the most part. Granted, I am playing V as we speak again after a 14 month hiatus to finish my other GTA Projects, which was the Mobile Ports for III, VC, SA, and CW. Now that I finished all my Saves on every platform I own, I am back to V to see if it has any life left.

As a kid I loved GTA SA.

Now I find GTA IV better. Storyline more realistic.
