Spaghetti Cat
Exciting news everyone, the New Horizons probe is closing in on the planet Pluto. And it's already coming back with some neat pics. The first being, Pluto is red. Who knew? What color is Pluto? The answer, revealed in the first maps made from New Horizons data, turns out to be shades of reddish brown. Although this is reminiscent of Mars, the cause is almost certainly very different. On Mars the coloring agent is iron oxide, commonly known as rust. On the dwarf planet Pluto, the reddish color is likely caused by hydrocarbon molecules that are formed when cosmic rays and solar ultraviolet light interact with methane in Pluto's atmosphere and on its surface. http://pluto.jhuapl.edu/News-Center/News-Article.php?page=20150703-2 And a quick GIF video of the approaching planet and the moon. http://pluto.jhuapl.edu/common/content/videos/dataMovies/7-3-15_Color_Rotation_Movie_NASA-JHUAPL-SWRI.gif It still boggles my mind that we can send a probe out that far, and that we've never seen the last planet in our solar system up close like this before. Make sure to check in over the next couple of days and weeks. The probe will make a fly-by of Pluto and then zoom off into interstellar space. Pretty cool. Kirsty
It truly is crazy to think here we are, going about our daily lives, travelling to work every day, earning this thing we call money so we can pay for little wires that carry data around the world to enable us to share posts on this forum. Does it ever make you feel like an insignificant little being? We've only just recognised the colour of Pluto's surface, imagine what else is beyond, in a galaxy far far away...? reiniat
BAH! Pluto is not a planet, nobody cares. Anyway, have you guys seen the blue dunes of Mars? Those things are magnificent: Sauce: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2012/02/27/frosty-blue-dunes-on-mars/#.VZc9H_l_Oko Anyway, New Horizon is going to get closer to Pluto and we'll get to see more detailed images of its surface. And to think that probe has been out there for almost ten years.... After flying by Pluto it will go to investigate other objects in the Kuiper Belt. thatguy718
So? I mean, does it really matter what the color of a planet is? I'm guessing they would have invested in quite a lot of funds to be able to have the tech to gain such information. This just seems like a waste of both money and time. Spaghetti Cat
Well, this is a bummer... http://pluto.jhuapl.edu/News-Center/News-Article.php?page=20150704 Apparently the probe had a glitch and went into 'safe mode' Hopefully the gang over there at NASA will get her back up eventually. I guess it's like unplugging your router, if your router was 3 billion (!) miles away. To put that in perspective, it takes 9 hours for the signal to be sent to the probe and acknowledged back here on Earth. Mind Boggling distances. Not A Nice Person
The probe got to the Moon in 8 hours, that's shorter than a flight from Canada to South Africa. Clem Fandango

MyName'sJeff
Then in the next 10-20 years or so, we'll have a probe that can go outside our galaxy called Milky Way and we find out it suspiciously has that brown colour surrounding it with a nougat centre. dudclub55
I'm excited to know what we'll find out about Pluto. Like I'm excited for when Voyager 1 will actually properly leave the Solar System past the Oort cloud, which probably won't happen in my life time, or the next 300 life times.
